Home of the detained, land of the concentration camps at our southern border.
Honestly, I don’t even know how I made it through America before them. Tag the ones that get your high & proud ass on every level. 🧘🏽♀️🧘🏾♀️🧘🏿♀️
Here’s to fooling around you didn’t know was fooling around because you didn’t know yourself. Or much else, really. Happy surviving the confusion and finding each other, loves! 💜❤️🧡💛💚💙
Going into the weekend like someone who has woken up wild and alive every night since hearing TNC land that hard blow between the past and the present, between the stories we hold up as proof of our own goodness and the ones we try to run from, or bury. Who knew testimony could feel like light and air, like wanting, for the first time in a long time, to breathe? But it did. So I breathe, my family asleep beside me, a whole wilderness of what might still happen ahead.
Me: Don’t be that tacky bitch who posts Alicia Keys super lovely tweet about Good Talk on every form of social media like some kind of— /Me: WE GOT OUR FEET ON THE GROUND AND WE’RE BURNING IT DOWN.
Two weeks ago, I had one of the very best nights of my life at a book club, and that maybe tells you way more about me than I want it to, but also Z came with me and it was @literaryswagbookclub, and the discussion was raw and heartening and always bending toward the more complex, the way it can when we are in a trusted space. Thank you, @yahdon for being the exact kind of human who makes those spaces flourish—that deep mix of compassion and renegade business savvy and willingness to try what no one else has so that we can meet on this level. Thanks also @thebkcircus for holding us so kindly on that torrential downpour of a night, and to all the members of @literaryswagbookclub for bringing it. You showed my son what this country can be and it changed us. Z was so chuffed he signed books! 📸: @dp.jolly
The headline says: “Mom, is it bad to be brown and Jewish?” That’s half the question. The rest was, “because those are two things no one likes?” It’s something my son asked me the day after Nazis marched in Charlottesville, something I’m still trying to answer, all these months later. I’m in the Guardian today talking about what it feels like to love the people in your family very much, and feel very disappointed with the world they choose to build at the peril of bodies like yours. If you are facing this particular brand of rage, sorrow, and loneliness, I feel you. Link in stories and below.
The second time I got my period, I decided to do whatever I needed to to get menopause. This is a true story of love and blood and devastation, and a fave piece that got cut early on from GOOD TALK, so if you would do me the enormous favor of reading it (link in IG stories and after that, below), it will heal all that is broken in me. Or like .2% of it. Thank you to @believermag and excellent @keradtke for bringing this into print.
Get you a cousin who drives 6 hours to see you read in Albuquerque, brings her copy of the TIME mag your book shares with AOC so you can hold it in your hands and make noises like a weirdo, is cool about you calling her a “friend” in that book even though she was in the waiting room when you were born, and lets you draw her face, because it is one of your very favorite faces, this face you have known before you knew your own.
This is where I am from. My parents moved to Albuquerque in 1968, the third East Indian family to move into the state of New Mexico. Last night, I read at the KiMo, which is where I saw my first concert, which was Don McLean singing American Pie, which I sang standing up on a red velvet seat with my hand over my heart because I was seven and I thought that’s what you did when you sang songs about America and I really wanted to get being American right. So it was surreal to come back last night and be welcomed onstage by Mayor Tim Keller and First Lady Elizabeth Kistin Keller. They talked about what GOOD TALK meant to them, and what being New Mexican means for all of us, and I was so stupid proud to represent. I saw a bunch of you in the crowd and took a lousy picture with my thumb over the lens and hugged everyone too hard—my old teachers and neighbors and high school friends and their excellent spouses and strangers who weren’t really strangers because somehow New Mexicans never really feel like strangers to me. Thank you for bringing me home, hometown. There is so much love here.
Yesterday, I finally created a self portrait that feels accurate and timeless and like my soul in digital form and welcome to my masterpiece, my work in this realm is done. *exits stage left with kimchee hotdog*
AAAAAH! Fan @read.write.read made her own comic in response to GOOD TALK and it is my favorite and yes we have been there, too, and hello, fellow American families never treated like other American families! I see you. ❤️#comics #comic #illustration #mixedrace #interracial #goodtalkthanks #bookstagram
It was an infinity elevator. It took us to another dimension where my sleeves became wings and my wine became whiskey and my body didn’t suffer the laws of men.

TODAY IS THE DAY, NEW YORK and surrounding country!!! So stoked to jump out of bed and grab my copy of @amnewyork and see this book inside it. Thank you to my friends and fam who kept my soul and mind and spirit intact while I drew this piece of my heart. This is for us. ❤️

Hi. Reviews are starting to come in for Good Talk. I promised myself I wouldn’t read many because America is what it is right now, and people are furious and disappointed for good reasons, and that’s probably gonna land like a fist in my face at some point. Maybe even tomorrow. But today I got news of this review in @time and I am 😭. #goodtalkthanks #illustrations #graphicnovel
These are my in-laws. They are hilarious and and welcoming and do things like hold a Bark Mitzvah for the family dog. They also can’t imagine certain things about what it’s like living in a brown body, as me and my son—their grandson—do. We mostly stopped talking to each other during the 2016 election season because it got too painful. They are still Trump supporters. We still love each other very much. We are talking again. But it has been hard. (18 of 20) Preorder link in bio. #goodtalkthanks #comics #illustrations #graphicnovel #bookstagram
This is my best friend of 20 years. She is the calmest, funniest person I know, which might seem like a physical impossibility but is actually just Alison. In 2015, as things got worse and worse in America, we started going on long walks, which means that we’ve gotten in pretty good shape these days. She has never asked me if something hurtful really happened, or tried to reframe it as good intentions I have somehow missed, or done the myriad of other things people do when you tell them about the parts of your life that make them uncomfortable. Which is not to say we don’t disagree about things—we disagree about plenty. But none of them are whether or not my experience is real. In one of life’s more surreal moments, yesterday I told a room full of women @dvf how drawing paper doll versions of me & my son turned into a book coming out at the end of the month. I was also introduced to a dress that covered my whole ass on the first try (thanks, @therealdvf!), as well as these very, very smart women. I would like to think a some part of my soul will always be sitting on those satin lips, under an icon sun, but really it’s just back to werkwerkwerk over here. Thank you, universe, for the respite. It was so lovely. 📸: @dvf @laraalcantara #goodtalkthanks

Romantic relationships are hard. Interracial romantic relationships are hard in ways I’m still trying to make sense of, even after nearly twenty years together. But this is how we started that first night, and how we kept going when I was making this book. It’s true. I have now become life imitating art imitating life. Find me tomorrow dragging pizza down the subway stairs with my teeth. Thank you and good night, New York City!
How do you keep yourself sane in a country that’s headed the opposite direction? In 2015, I started meeting up with @kaitlyngreenidge and @hiwildflower outside of work events in Brooklyn. It helped that they are writers, and needed to name what was happening as urgently as I did. It helped that they never told me I was overreacting, or being divisive, or just not seeing all the good in the country. It helped, in other words, that they believed me. That we believed each other. I wish I could say it made what was to come easier to handle. It did not.Sometimes, though, I felt less alone. #goodtalkthanks (15 of 20)
Today in the @guardian, I try to explain America and Indian Americans and racism to my son. Spoiler alert: I fuck it up. Link in bio and below. #goodtalkthanks

Cannot quite explain how uninterested I am in the opinion of Equivocating Dude (or his bro, Let’s See The Bigger Picture Guy). If a woman getting up to do this is just another way for you to talk about your potential loss of power, stfu already. And don’t pretend your bigger picture includes any of us. #goodtalkthanks
And we’re back! With new work in @tin_house! And a new way to get through the party with your skin on. (Writers, this one is for you. Feel free to use as necessary.)
Thanks to all of you who made this a sold-out event. Have never needed to see my people so much.
Long before every last J.Crew and Chase Bank and McDonald’s propped up their rainbows, there was I See You Auntie telling me this world was not always what it seemed, and could be much more than I imagined. Happy Pride, loves! ❤️🌈❤️ #comics #illustrations #goodtalkthanks #auntie #aunties
