"... But I had the privilege of working with the classiest gentleman possibly that I’ve ever known in the industry, Gordon Parks. So, that word, exploitation, I take offense to with any attachment to Gordon Parks. That was not who he is, was or had been. And yes, I have done a couple of films that could be categorized in that category, but my experience of what I was able to do with Gordon transcends that label." - Richard Roundtree reminiscing about his time working with Gordon Parks on Shaft in the recent @nytimes article "‘Shaft’ Made Richard Roundtree a Star. During the spring 2019 semester, students from Professor Kayafas’ Curatorial Practices in Photography class at Pratt Institute explored Gordon Parks’ long-standing relationships with and personal commitment to his subjects. Using images from three different Life Magazine stories: “Harlem Gang Leader,” the 1961 story “Freedom’s Fearful Foe: Poverty,” and the 1967 story “A Harlem Family”—the students proposed an exhibition entitled “First Person: Gordon Parks” that emphasized the importance of Parks’ relationships with the individual subjects as intrinsic to his practice. Today is the anniversary of Malcolm X's birth. When Gordon Parks documented the Nation of Islam in 1963, Malcolm X was his personal guide. From there until the minister's assassination in 1965, Malcolm X and Parks developed a close friendship born out of mutual respect. Parks became the godfather of Malcolm's second daughter, Qubilah. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Malcolm X at Rally, Chicago, Illinois, 1963⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #gordonparks #gordonparksfoundation #malcolmx #nationofislam #photography #photojournalism #onthisday #lifemagazine
