There is a road, no simple highway Between the dawn and the dark of night And if you go no one may follow That path is for your steps alone #DaysBetween
From the liner notes of our upcoming Giants Stadium release... || Perhaps the most remarkable thing about the supersized shows of the Dead’s stadium era is simply this: in terms of the music and overall vibe, they were still Grateful Dead shows in every aspect, delivered with only minimal concessions to the setting. Surely, the more forceful gestures in the music (and the crowd’s response to them) were even bigger (and louder) in a stadium, but the truly remarkable thing is how the band remained determined to give equal weight to the more subtle, oblique elements; to the exploratory improvisation and rhythmic complexities; to the fine details of the most heart-rending ballads as well as the weirdest dissonances in the jams. That they did so only served to make the contrast more thrilling when they went into full-throttle mode on the more emphatically rocking material. Photo: © James R Anderson

Born of the emergent counterculture perhaps more than any other single act on the bill, the Dead’s set likewise reflected Woodstock and the counterculture’s chaos to its fullest: an interminable tech break; band members getting shocked by ungrounded microphones; a few moments of flashing musical brilliance; and a total rando crashing the stage and taking the mic during the beginning of a sprawling, 40-minute rendition of “Turn On Your Lovelight.” || Photo: Allen Koss - Frank White Photo Agency #BackToTheGarden

"Life causes life. Heaven and Earth dance in this way endlessly, and their child is the forest. And so there we were, epiphanously watching that grandest and most glorious dance of life—of which we are just a tiny part—awed by a magnificence without beginning, without end..." - @BobWeir, “Sell Headwaters—Everyone Wins,” San Francisco Chronicle © Photo by Richard Pechner/ rpechner.com #WallOfSound
