“Situated in the heart of the city, Széchenyi Baths is one of Europe’s largest bath houses, and among the most popular spas in Budapest. Built in the early 20th century, the spa features a Neo-Baroque palace, three large outdoor pools and a labyrinth of indoor pools to discover. With so many relaxation options, it was easy to spend almost a full day here. But if you’d like to cross the Danube for the many famous spas on the Buda side of the city, don’t miss Rudas Baths and its open-air rooftop hot tub. The views alone will leave you in awe. The rest of the spa has the look of an ancient bath house, without feeling dated. Perfect for a relaxing soak on a historic site.” —Great Big Story producer @jacob_harrell on two of his favorite spas in Budapest. We’re in Budapest all month taking in the sights, flavors and culture of Hungary. Our producer @jacob_harrell’s first spa recommendation is #GellértBaths. “The first thing I noticed when I entered Gellért Baths were the beautiful tiles. I had heard that Gellért was famous for its Art Nouveau–style architecture and I can see why; it’s beautiful. The floor-to-ceiling turquoise ceramics were my favorite aspect. Gellért has six indoor and two outdoor pools, with one outdoor pool shutting down during the winter months. If you want to relax in a thermal bath that also has beautiful architecture, then Gellért is the place to go.” This Great Big Story Recommends is by @spiceofeurope
We’re in Budapest all month taking in the sights, flavors and culture of Hungary. Check out producer @sofia.couceiro’s restaurant picks of the day: “The world famous @gerbeaud_cafe in Vörösmarty Square is an absolute must-visit while in Budapest. Regarded as one of the greatest coffee houses in Europe, its grand design and delicious pastries make it a top tourist attraction. During the holiday season, the Vörösmarty Square Christmas market is held in front of the café. I recommend checking out the Christmas market and then going into Gerbeaud for a warm drink and a yummy pastry—my favorite is the Esterházy cake. Then head over to @kioskbudapest for dinner. Out of all my recommendations, Kiosk holds a special place in my heart. I discovered it while on a shoot and am so glad I did. It has a modern, open floor plan so you don’t feel like you’re too close to your fellow diners. If you like fish, try the pan-fried trout fillet. Swipe → to check out Kiosk’s cool design.” This Great Big Story Recommends is by @spiceofeurope
