Happy #WorldLionDay! @GreatPlainsFoundation is working to protect more land for lions and working with communities and other NGOs to find a safe place for them going forward. With only 20 000 left, it's an essential task - and they are so worth the effort! https://greatplainsfoundation.com/lionking/

What a wonderful sighting at Duba Explorers. The alpha female brought the latest additions to the pack out from their den as the rest of the painted dogs arrived back from a kill. We're honoured to introduce you to Isaac Kariuki from Central Kenya. Isaac briefly moved to Nairobi before beginning his work at Ol Donyo Lodge in 2003 - even before it became a Great Plains Lodge. Over the years, he has worked in almost every department , from cleaning swimming pools, dishwashing, housekeeping and storekeeping , then he moved into the office and the accounts department. Today he is Assistant Manager at Ol Donyo Lodge and deals with the back of house running of the lodge. He is the one who keeps everything smoothly ticking over behind the scenes - and he does it brilliantly. Isaac says: “Great Plains has truly helped me realise my potential and helped me grow into who I am today. I never thought I would be a manager, but I just kept working hard in every department I was in and then Great Plains trained me up with programs in hotel and service standards, customer relations, booking software and even a bit of guiding. Great plains has invested a lot in me and made me who I am, it has really changed my life – I am very grateful.” He says he has seen a lot of change in this area over the last 16 years that he has been here. Wildlife has increased, especially the lion population. Also the Maasai community benefit from the lodge and wildlife being here, and the cultural visit to the Maasai village is always a popular activity for guests to see, in his experience. Isaac - what a privilege to have you supporting our ol Donyo family. We're so proud of how far you have come through your hard work. Asante sana. #Kenya #olDonyoLodge #MeetTheGPCFamily

We’d like to introduce you to Dan Tipape. Dan was born in Birikani community in the Chyulu Hills in Kenya. He's had an amazing - and very lucky journey getting to Great Plains ol Donyo. Dan wasn’t destined for school – there wasn’t the money. But when he was 7, Dan was lucky enough to be sponsored by a charity called Christian Children Fund (CCF). The funding came from 'Foster Parents' and while Dan knew the names of the generous people who had given him an education, he wasn't able to contact them. Much later Dan got a message on Facebook from a woman with the name he recognised. She had photos of him from when he was younger. Dan also had a photo of her. She was the Foster Parent who had changed his life! This family then paid for Dan to study Guiding and Administration in Nairobi. After qualifying, Dan returned to the Chyulu Hills where he joined the Ol Donyo team. There hadn’t been any available guiding positions but he became Head of Stores and Managerial Assistant. In 2013 Dan also passed his KPSGA bronze guiding qualification and began assisting walking safaris. Head Guide Seki was Dan’s mentor, driving his knowledge, which led to him becoming a relief guide. After this, Great Plains Conservation started sponsoring Dan to do his eco-training once a year for 4 years. Dan has seen an incredible change in this landscape over his lifetime. He saw a big decline in big cats over the years and is impressed at the difference that the Maasai Olympics has made in these communities – changing perspectives. The Olympics was started in response to the serious decline in lions and gives an alternative to the traditional hunting of these big cats. It’s been an amazing success – the results of which can be seen by the now regular sighting of lions around ol Donyo Lodge. Great Plains Conservation is a proud sponsor of this event. It’s been such a pleasure seeing you grow Dan. We look forward to many more happy years

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now. - Chinese Proverb. #Repost @greatplainsfoundation ・・・ What an excellent morning we have had with students from Lesedi Primary School, just outside Victoria Falls who helped us to plant 20 indigenous trees around their school. These trees will provide wonderful shade, shelter and even fruit in the years to come and the children, who will water them frequently, will remember the important part that they played in bringing this positive change about. A huge thank you to Benson Siyawareva for arranging this and to Shelley Cox for the very generous donation of all the trees. We plan on planting many more so if you'd like to donate one, please visit https://greatplainsfoundation.com/conservation-roots/
