As we set out to film the nearly 700 mile journey of the Yellowstone River, we focused on stories unique to a free flowing river. The Yellowstone is the longest undammed river in the lower 48 states. . . Experience the untamed river from its headwaters in Yellowstone National Park to the convergence with the Missouri this Sunday on Epic Yellowstone: Down The River Wild.

Early in production, the crew came across a lone adolescent wolf who we began calling ‘Blacktail’ - a reference to the area where this wolf was first seen. Blacktail was found scavenging on a winterkill bison carcass - and facing off with a diverse range of competitors: a massive boar grizzly, a bold gang of coyotes, and even a herd of cantankerous bison! — Telling his story opened our eyes to the incredible adversity faced by even ‘apex’ predators. This became an important theme throughout ‘Return of the Predators’ because it is so often misunderstood. Many look at predators with an almost god-like reverence. Others regard them as dangerous villains. Both visions are distortions of the truth. But as @ricksmith_media, and @ronan_donovan discovered filming ‘Blacktail,’ the day-to-day life of a predator was even more fascinating than we could imagine. We’ll always have a real soft spot for grizzlies. 🐻 #repost @smithsonian_channel ・・・ Eight years prior to beginning filming for ‘Epic Yellowstone,’ rumors began circulating of a sow grizzly with four cubs-of-the-year. This rare event has only been documented a handful of times in Yellowstone’s history. . It forged a singular name and identity for this beautiful mother grizzly: “Quad-Mom.” . Quad Mom’s fame has continued to grow as year-after-year she and her cubs are seen thriving - she is now one of the oldest documented grizzlies ever to breed. . 💥We’re taking over the @smithsonian_channel feed ahead of tomorrow’s premiere!💥 — Sunday, 9PM ET/PT — Yellowstone’s geothermal features take many forms. This moment of eruption was captured at the Leather Pool with a 4K super slow motion camera. The heat from the supervolcano below collides with subzero temperatures in the air. Apalachicola, Florida is a quaint town on the Apalachicola Bay, forming the bulge in the Florida Panhandle. The Apalachicola River flows into this shallow, warm bay, and with it comes sediments rich in nutrients that are ideal for growing oysters. However, a tragic mixture of overharvesting, an oil spill and the inconsistency of the river flow has drastically put the oyster business in decline. And now Hurricane Michael. Our hearts are with this marvelous town and our dear friend Kendall Shoelles, who touched our hearts in 2015 on the Forgotten Coast Expedition. //\\ #hurricanemichael #florida #oyster #apalachicola
