Title: Portrait of Armand Roulin, 1888 Author: Vincent van Gogh Museum: Museum Folkwang, Essen, Germany Van Gogh painted Armand Roulin, the son of his close friend Joseph Roulin, several times. This portrait, from the Museum Folkwang, in Essen, Germany, was painted in 1888, when Armand was only seventeen, but he has already left his family’s home at this point to work as a blacksmith. Van Gogh paints him in his good clothes—a white shirt, a tie, a colorful jacket, and a fedora. But his outfit is a bit rumpled, turning downward, reflecting Armand’s sideway look. There’s a combination of sadness and youthful directness to the boy that van Gogh was clearly drawn to. — @oritgat #GucciBeauty @alessandro_michele #AlessandroMichele

Title: Emperor Muhammad Akbar (1542- 1605) Indian School Private Collection This portrait of the 16th-century Emperor Muhammad Akbar displays the characteristics of Indian miniature painting. Originating in Bengal, the style involved intricate patterns and geometries. The only bare expanse in the work is Akbar the Great’s soft skin and the plain background. Captured softly and methodically, Akbar’s look belies his achievements, the emperor expanded the Mughal Empire to cover much of modern-day India. — @kchayka #GucciBeauty @alessandro_michele #AlessandroMichele Photo © Bridgeman Images

Title: Tamati Waka Nene, 1890 Author: Gottfried Lindauer Museum: Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, New Zealand This 1890 portrait from the Auckland Art Gallery depicts Tamati Waka Nene, chief of the Maori Ngāpuhi tribe, who was a leader in the intertribal Musket Wars provoked after the British arrived. His status is shown in his cloak, the weapon (a tewhatewa) that he holds, and his earring of greenstone. Most distinctive are his traditional face tattoos, called moko, which the painter Gottfried Lindauer has rendered with fidelity. The chief glows with an aura of strength and leadership. Lindauer frequently painted the Maori people, but was also commissioned by chieftains for naturalistic portraits, which provide a link between the community and their ancestors through today. — @lrsphm #GucciBeauty @alessandro_michele #AlessandroMichele Photo © Bridgeman Images

Title: Shah Ismail I, ruler of Iran 1501- 1524 and founder of the Safavid Dynasty (1501- 1736) Author: Anonymous Italian painter Ismail I, who came to power as the Shah of Iran in 1501, conquered much of the Iranian empire, and created the Safavid Dynasty, which would continue for over two centuries. A prolific Azerbaijani poet as well as military strategist, Ismail I is depicted in this posthumous 17th-century portrait by a Venetian artist, possibly portraitist Cristofano dell’Altissimo. The image emphasizes his famously regal profile and unusual red hair, as well as his traditional turban. He is depicted as a world leader, a handsome, thoughtful man who is both poetic and powerful. — @lrsphm #GucciBeauty @alessandro_michele #AlessandroMichele Photo © Pictures from History / Bridgeman Images

Title: Portrait of Maurice of Nassau, Prince of Orange, 1643 Author: Gerrit van Honthorst Private Collection Gerrit van Honthorst was a Dutch painter known for his use of chiaroscuro, often painting scenes that were lit by just a single candle. In this portrait, van Honthorst’s characteristic lighting gently illuminates the rosy cheeks and soft skin of his subject, said to be either Prince Maurice of Nassau or Maurice of the Palatinate, who appears in this portrait as a young noble, richly dressed, with a tranquil expression. His long, carefully curled hair, elaborate collar, and slight moustache speak to the fashionable stylings of his era. — @lrsphm #GucciBeauty @alessandro_michele #AlessandroMichele Photo © Christie's Images / Bridgeman Images

Title: Actor Matsumoto Kōshirō VII as Sukeroku, 1920 Author: Yamamura Koka (Toyonari) Museum: Minneapolis Institute of Arts, MN, USA In Japanese kabuki theatre, heavy makeup is used to emphasize the personality of a character rather than an individual. In this print from 1920 at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Matsumoto Kōshirō VII, a famous kabuki actor of the early 20th century, is shown in costume as Sukeroku, a fight-provoking samurai looking for the killer of his father. The role’s makeup accentuates his angry brows; his mouth, painted red, symbolizes passion. The artist Toyonari was known for his prints of male actors. With delicate lines, Toyonari captures Sukeroku’s quest: the actor’s eyes gaze out of frame, searching. — @lrsphm #GucciBeauty @alessandro_michele #AlessandroMichele Photo © Minneapolis Institute of Arts / Gift of Ellen and Fred Wells / Bridgeman Images

Title: Self Portrait, 1903 Author: Mario Segantini Private Collection Mario Segantini is an unusual figure in the history of art. Segantini spent much of his career obsessed with mystical imagery, painting a more magical world than the one we inhabit as part of the Symbolist movement. In this colorful self-portrait from 1903, he depicts himself as a beautiful blond-haired youth, hands clasped over a bouquet of blooming flowers. This work, held in a private collection, shows how modern Segantini’s work could be, especially the echoes of his signature on the left-hand side. — @tatianaberg #GucciBeauty @alessandro_michele #AlessandroMichele Photo © Christie's Images / Bridgeman Images

Title: Portrait of a Youth with a Surgical Cut in one Eye, A.D. 190-210 Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York This ancient Roman portrait from the second century CE, held in the collection of the @metmuseum, is especially unique because of the appearance of a scar on the subject’s right eye. His horizontal lower eyelid suggests a surgery performed to relieve an abnormality. The young man stares confidently with his slightly uneven gaze, his face so flush and lips so moist he appears almost disconcertingly alive, despite being over 1,500 years old. — @tatianaberg #GucciBeauty #TheMet @alessandro_michele #AlessandroMichele Rogers Fund, 1909

Title: Ayuba Suleiman Diallo Author: William Hoare Museum: National Portrait Gallery London Before he was captured in the African slave trade, Ayuba Suleiman Diallo was part of a family of Muslim religious leaders in Senegal. Diallo suffered through the passage to America and landed in Maryland tobacco fields, but his piety and fluency in Arabic eventually brought him to London, where public figures bought his freedom. William Hoare’s 1701 painting held at the National Portrait Gallery of London, the first British oil portrait of a freed slave, emphasizes the rich color of Diallo’s skin and his exotic status — a Quran hangs around his neck. But the portrait of Diallo is also a symbol of how many people didn't escape slavery. — @kchayka #GucciBeauty @alessandro_michele #AlessandroMichele Photo © Christie's Images / Bridgeman Images

Title: Portrait of Franz Schubert, Austrian composer, aged 17, c.1814 Austrian School Museum: Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, Austria This portrait of Franz Schubert held in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna captures the composer as a brilliant but frustrated prodigy: at 17, Schubert was still bored and unchallenged as a lowly music teacher. Rendered realistically in oil paint with full lips and a tragic air, he appears lost in thought, dreamily gazing at some middle distance—perhaps dreaming up compositions, or his future creative life. — @tatianaberg #GucciBeauty @alessandro_michele #AlessandroMichele Photo © Bridgeman Images

Title: Boy in a Ladyfinger Shirt, 2018 Author: Amoako Boafo Private Collection ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ Amoako Boafo once said in an interview that color played a “vital role” in his work, and this is most evident in his ongoing portraits for the Diaspora Series. Describing the series as “first a celebration of blackness and second a form of documentation,” this Ghana-born, Vienna-based artist utilizes ample pops of color in the rich browns of his subjects’ skin tones, boldly and elegantly elevating its beauty. In this 2018 painting, the subject’s deep brown skin plays beautifully off of the bright white and shades of green of his T-shirt. — @britticisms #GucciBeauty @alessandro_michele #AlessandroMichele Courtesy of the artist and Roberts Projects, Los Angeles @Robertsprojects @Amoakoboafo Photography: Robert Wedemeyer
