#tbt The #midcentury saw #DavidSimpson introducing pure color and geometry in his paintings, and playing with obtics. Here, a neon arc guides the viewer's eye beyond the expanse of a blue canvas. . Images, from left: Blue to Yellow Air, 1967; Simpson in his studio, 1971
Over a career spanning six decades, #DavidSimpson has woven together minimalism and hard-edge abstraction with impulses of the California Light and Space movement. A selection of his works are now on view at Haines Gallery, as part of our group show Quintessence, closing TOMORROW! . To see new works by David, join us next Thursday at 5:30pm for the opening of his new solo exhibition The War Room. . Images, from left: Silver Ransom, 2003; Ruinous Jewelry, 2002; Parable II, 1989
The War Room, opening in just a week, is our latest exhibition with seminal Bay Area painter #DavidSimpson. Perhaps his most pointedly political body of work to date, The War Room addresses global violence, the atrocities of war, and absurdities of the current US administration, and highlights the latent political power of non-figurative art. The mottled surfaces of these paintings – mostly created after January 20, 2017 and with interference pigments – evoke cacophonous images of conflict. Join us for the opening reception next Thursday, September 6 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. . Images, from left: Trajectory, War Zone, and Mistakes Were Made, all 2017
#ShivaAhmadi's Strait of Hormuz references the channel between Iran and the Gulf States, through which a fifth of the world's petroleum passes each day. Ahmadi depicts the Strait as a site where political games are played out, with destabilized and volatile masses of floating rubble on either side. . Such geopolitical concerns are explored in Burning Song, Ahmadi's solo show opening on Thursday, September 6, 5:30pm. . Images, from left: Shiva Ahmadi, Strait of Hormuz, 2018, and detail
#ShivaAhmadi uses grains of sand, rice, and hair to create texture and visceral representations violence in her paintings. Her upcoming solo exhibition Burning Song will include Under the Sea, a new work on paper created at her recent residency in Italy's Civitella Ranieri, which see her experimenting with new materials. . Join us for the opening of Burning Song on Thursday, September 6, 5:30pm - 7:30pm. . Image: Shiva Ahmadi, Under the Sea, 2018, and detail
#ShivaAhmadi's meticulously decorated Pressure Cooker sculptures are covered in hand-inscribed intaglio etchings. Created from traditional Afghan pressure cookers, sourced from markets in Iran, as well as American-made models, the works point to real-world tools of violence, and more generally to the domesticity of terror. As with the rest of Ahmadi’s works, the potency of these sculptures lie in the tension between ornamentation and destruction. . See these sculptures and more in Ahmadi's solo exhibition, Burning Song, opening September 6 at #HainesGallery, and on view through October 27. .
