#Repost @natgeo ・・・ Photo by @beverlyjoubert | A red-faced lion means that the pride has been successful in hunting. The Tsaro Pride in the Okavango are currently completely focused on hunting for red lechwe in the swamps. While lions are generally known to be predators of the night, these cats are getting up later and later in the day to hunt in full daylight and @dereckjoubert and I have watched them successfully taking down lechwe in water at high noon. The hunts may take time in the relatively open plains but the water keeps the lions cool in the heat of the day and their muscles have long adapted to running through the swampy landscape, building their forelegs and chests impressively. The cubs have now eaten their fill but the pride is large and those rounded pupils in yellow eyes will soon refocus intensely on their next meal and the hunt will be on once again. #DeedlyEducation @deedlyeducation

#Repost @world_wildlife ・・・ Healthy ecosystems play a critical role in fighting climate change. They help regulate the Earth’s temperature and natural cycles by pulling harmful, heat-trapping gases out of the atmosphere. But not all ecosystems have the fame and glory of the Amazon. Brazil’s Cerrado savanna covers more than 20% of the country. It’s the world’s most biodiverse savanna, home to an astonishing 5% of the Earth’s plants and animal species, like jaguars, giant anteaters, maned wolves, and armadillos. While ecosystems like the Cerrado may not be household names, they support an incredible range of wildlife, as well as millions of people and their communities. Thousands of species are at risk of extinction.Visit our website to find out how you can help. www.deedly.com @deedlyeducation — Scientists estimate that 150-200 species of plant, insect, bird and mammal become extinct every 24 hours. This is nearly 1,000 times the “natural” or “background” rate and, say many biologists, is greater than anything the world has experienced since the vanishing of the dinosaurs nearly 65m years ago. 📸 : @kpunkka

#Repost @natgeo ・・・ Photo by @jtkerby || The cold waters of Alexandra Fiord and the snout of the Twin Glacier pin the valley’s meadows between two dolomitic ridgelines. Research scientist Dr. Isla Myers-Smith (University of Edinburgh) ascends the ridge in front of the glacier, the human scale in this austere yet beautiful landscape. Just decades ago, glacial ice would have covered the spot where Isla stands. As the ice retreats, vegetation and even animal remains are sometimes released from their frozen tombs, hundreds or even thousands of years after being locked away. While this disappearing ice is linked to global climate change, the specimens that emerge from the ice are invaluable to researchers. They act as windows (and even sources of DNA!) into the long past, cold deaths that gave an unexpected gift to science. Fortunately, researchers have been intensively studying this polar oasis for almost 40 years, making it one of the better understood patches of tundra in the Arctic and also a place where inconspicuous data like these are more likely to be spotted. #AlexandraFiord #Ellesmere #HighArctic #Canada
