We’re thrilled to be at the @annecyfestival this week! Stay tuned for updates and maybe a new study finding or two!
Yesterday, we released our first research study on the portrayal of mental health conditions in media. We also hosted an event to discuss the results. Thanks to @mrs.nicolephelps for honest, moving, and important opening remarks that set a tone for the day. Thanks to our fantastic panelist for an open, eloquent, and informative discussion. Thanks to all who joined us. You can read the full study at the link in our bio. A special thanks to @afspnational for their help with the research. Our gratitude also to The Lovell Foundation who sponsored the project.
Loved being part of the @timesupnow sisterhood at #cannes2019 during the @kering_official #womeninmotion dinner! Great research discussions... and plotting how to change the world.
Today’s fantastic panelists— the discussion covered directors, press, photographers, red carpets, and ultimately creating large-scale cultural change for greater inclusion in entertainment. Thanks to @kering_official #womeninmotion for hosting this wonderful group! Looking forward to working with @gettyimages to answering some of the questions posed today by our @usc alum @kirstinbenson! 📸: @gettyimages
Tune in to watch our own Dr. Stacy L. Smith discuss inclusion in cinema with fantastic panelists, Jacqueline Coley, Kirstin Benson, Anita Gou and Michael Barker. Moderated by Claudia Eller, the conversation is taking place as part of the #WomeninMotion series at Cannes Film Festival. https://www.facebook.com/keringgroup/
Hello from Cannes! Tomorrow #drstacylsmith will join a panel discussion on inclusion in cinema with our partner @kering_official #womeninmotion. The panel will be live-streamed so stay tuned for how to watch!
On May 30th, we will release a landmark report on the portrayal of mental health in media. In partnership with the @afspnational and generously funded by the David & Lura Lovell Foundation, the research marks a new and important direction for our work. Special mention to Angel Choi ( @choiangel) and Dr. Christine Moutier ( @cmoutier) for their major contributions to this project, and thanks to our whole team of @uscannenberg students for their hard work. We’re excited to share more soon, so stay tuned! #ascj #mentalhealthawareness
Thrilled to announce our partnership with Women in Motion @festivaldecannes. Looking forward to the Festival next week! #ascj From the announcement, out today: The collaboration of Women In Motion with #drstacylsmith will begin in Cannes during a roundtable led by the researcher, and will continue for 9 months of research on the theme of the representation of women in the cinema and their reflection in the media. “Our partnership with Women In Motion and Kering offers an unprecedented opportunity to advance inclusion in the cinema industry in meaningful ways, particularly when it comes to aspects of press coverage. Together, we can engage key stakeholders in meaningful ways to develop and implement true solutions and create lasting change.”— Dr. Stacy L. As promised, Saturday night held much more than LL Cool J. #drstacylsmith had her first visit to the recording studio. Our data show that only 22% of artists, 12% of songwriters, 2% of producers, and 3% of mixers/engineers are women. But on Saturday, Stacy stepped into a studio session that looks like the future— filled with women in every key role (including an academic!). Recording Academy Task Force Members @andradaymusic @trakgirl @createakershaw were there along with new friends @priscillarenea @kimmiekatz_audio. Thanks to @jenvybuskin for making it possible for Stacy to experience this moment and to participate in the incredible momentum being built with @desireegruber @annabelle8 and @instagrabn with @thisisfortherecord. We’re looking forward to seeing more studios that look like this, and to sharing the absolute magic that resulted from this session.
We’re honored, pleased, and proud that #drstacylsmith was named to @THR 50 Agents of Change list. Stacy’s commitment and passion for our work drives us and inspires us every day. We also want to acknowledge all the individuals and groups that played a critical role in reaching this moment. Thanks to everyone who helped us along the way, partnering, supporting, and encouraging us. There’s too many to name, but a few are @gdigm @madelinedinonno for putting us on this path, @tarihartmansquire @dannywoodburn for their assistance with our research on characters with disabilities, @fanshen @kalpanakotagal for coauthoring the #InclusionRider, and to all our students, alumni, and donors who have made this work possible. Check out the full list of honorees at the link in our bio.
Today we’re at the @milkeninstitute Global Conference, where #drstacylsmith joined a fantastic panel to discuss advancing inclusion in entertainment. Board Member @jodyagerson, Gloria Calderon Kellet, Jacqueline Coley, Katie McGrath, and Jonathan King participated in the conversation, moderated by Alex Witt, on the ways entertainment is changing and what is still needed. In true fashion, Stacy came equipped with data. Of the 373 speakers at Milken today, 7% are women of color, 18% are men of color, 21% are white women, and 53% are white men. But it doesn’t have to stay this way— Stacy offered solutions, like setting target inclusion goals and taking action from the top of companies and organizations. #miglobal
Look at who we ran into at the Annenberg Space for Photography Hip Hop exhibit tonight! @amyemmerich, the President of @refinery29 North America and @Inclusionists Board Member. The band is back together, and better than ever. #drstacylsmith is in Vegas today for #LatinMusicWeek with our favorite G’s - Becky G and Karol G! Stacy G (honorary member of Team G) shared new data on how women fare on the @billboardlatin charts and discussing women in the lead! The panelists also announced #Sheisthemusiclatin @sheisthemusic #inclusionmatters
Today we issued a new research brief examining gender inclusion in country music. The brief investigates the age and gender of artists across the Year-End Billboard Hot Country charts from 2014 to 2018, songwriter gender for 200 songs, and nominations for the last 5 years in 4 categories at the Academy of Country Music Awards. Check out results here and read the full report. (Link in bio!) We also announced commitments from UMG Nashville, YouTube Music, Women Nation, and the Academy of Country Music— key leaders for inclusion in country music. According to Dr. Stacy Smith, “The Annenberg Inclusion Initiative is calling on other labels and industry partners—especially those in radio—to undertake similar analyses in their own businesses. With a rigorous investigation of what data tell us about audience preferences and behaviors, it is possible to confront antiquated beliefs about what consumers want to create an environment where great music by male and female artists thrives.”
“Chance favors the prepared mind.” Pasteur One of my favorite fortuitous events. We discussed implicit bias and the book Blindspot. #FF #wordscreateworlds #legend #Hollywoodroyalty #sweetmeryl
On March 12 our own #drstacylsmith was honored at the @marieclairemag #changemakers event celebrating women who are shaking up their industries. It’s good news today... change is here! We examined leads and co leads across 1,200 popular films from 2007 to 2018. There were significant gains for females, underrepresented racial/ethnic groups, and women of color last year.
