Is it art or is it architecture? 🤔💪🏽✨⚙️It’s BOTH! In last week’s Inner-City Arts’ STEAM Connections Professional Development session, educators used art, design, architecture, engineering, math and imagination to create Railroad Board Sculptures. ➡️ to see how they turned out!
Jurassic Arts. 🦖 ✨ In Perspectives In Photography & Drawing, we tried out forced perspective photography - and Inner-City Arts student Frida almost got eaten by a dinosaur. #ARTFINDSAWAY
❤️☺️From this weekend’s Youth Performance Ensemble’s production of Anywhere & Everywhere, In Our America. Today, students explored photo emulsions and created visual poems, portraits, or abstract compositions that remind us of Man Ray’s surrealist rayographs.✨💛🌞Here Inner-City Arts student Luna holds up her work for the very first time after exposing the photo sensitive fabric and solution to sun.

“Sometimes, I wouldn’t be able to get out of bed or step out of the house […] So what I used to do, and what I still do, is put some music on and dance […] dancing puts me back into reality and makes me feel not alone — I’m with the music and I’m in tap with, like, my own self." In Episode II of Artists in the Hood, hosts (and Inner-City Arts students) Alejandro and Cindy speak candidly about how art has helped them cope with anxiety, depression, and trauma. Head over to @workofartradio to listen!
In Introduction to Drawing, students were given a paper bag with an unknown object and asked to blindly contour draw what they felt - relying only on texture, shape, and their intuition. ✨🖋

30 years ago Bob Bates was inspired by a vision to ‘get an art space for kids.’ In honor of our 30-year history, and this year’s Imagine Awards Lifetime Achievement honoree and Inner-City Arts Co-Founder Bob Bates, we're presenting an exhibition spotlighting 30 different visions — visions from current students, past alumni, supporters, local artists, staff members, volunteers, co-founders, community leaders and more — each highlighting the impact of our history, while providing inspiration for our future. ✨ Do you have a poem, film, sculpture, painting, dance, piece of art that expresses your vision for the future? Inner-City Arts' friends are encouraged to send in their art, video, music, performance (and more!) submissions for review, and consideration before Monday, July 15th. Submit here: bit.ly/ica30visions or click the link in bio!
Our summer programs have begun with a bang! 📸💥 In the first session of our Perspectives in Photography & Drawing workshop, students had to inhabit the perspective of animals - lizards, ants, giraffes, birds - and take photos of how they think they would experience the world!

"I remember Bob. I remember walking from 9th St. Elementary and up these stairs into this small art studio. It was the first time I ever drew on a big piece of paper that wasn't a coloring book. It was so different from everything else I had experienced." | 30 years ago Inner-City Arts was a small studio space on Olympic Boulevard. In its inaugural year, Inner-City Arts served a total of 60 elementary school students from 9th Street Elementary School. Last week, one of those students came back. 💛 Pierre (pictured) came with @lionsgate for a group volunteer day and surprised us with his memories! A huge thank you to Lionsgate for volunteering and giving us this special moment! #lionshares
We know that "Thank You" encapsulates only an iota of the gratitude and awe we have for teachers — for the teachers who challenge us, who open our minds (and our hearts), who help us channel our immense creativity. But we'll say it anyway — Thank You. In honor of #TeacherAppreciationWeek, share a memory of a teacher that showed you the power of art in the comments below! 📸: @aaanthonytran
