Happy Out on the Shelves Week! We have LOVED seeing your photos from all over NZ come through today! 🌈 Is your library or school creating a display? Tag #outontheshelves 📚We are running our display competition again this year, and can't wait to see more of your displays!
It’s been great connecting with the rainbow community in Ōtepoti/Dunedin over the last few days - so great to see events happening for the young people in our community 🏳️🌈 As a national org we love connecting and hearing how things are all over Aotearoa.
This year we have bookmarks on: gay, lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, transgender, non-binary, takatāpui, asexual, aromantic, intersex and children’s books featuring rainbow relationships and gender diverse characters! 🌈 Order ASAP from outontheshelves.insideout.org.nz to get them in time for our campaign week! Thanks to some of our beautiful board members for their modelling! 💖
We are devastated to hear about the loss of Tapu Te Ranga Marae due to fire overnight. Tapu Te Ranga was the home of InsideOUT's first project - Hui Putahi in 2012 and a number of other hui in the years following. The wairua and whānau of Tapu Te Ranga provided our community and so many of our rainbow people with an incredible place to learn, connect, and find their tūrangawaewae. Our aroha goes out to the Stewart whānau and everyone impacted by this loss. If you are able to, please consider donating to help rebuild the marae at the link below: https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/rebuild-tapu-te-ranga-marae
Happy Pride Month to everyone celebrating in June! 🥳 We’re excited to release these new bookmarks for this year’s #outontheshelves campaign - this year we’ve added some new ones, made them bigger and more friendly to read for accessibility, and made them double sided! 📚 Order now at outontheshelves.insideout.org.nz 🏳️🌈 make sure your school or community library is getting bookmarks in and entering our rainbow display comp - why not tag them in this post? 💛

Another busy day for our team training the HR team at Ministry of Justice and running sexuality and gender diversity workshops for students at St Matthew’s Collegiate School in Wairarapa! 🌈
We welcome the announcements from today's wellbeing budget, which begins to really recognise rainbow populations in Aotearoa at a government level for the first time. While we are thrilled by this news, it is important to acknowledge that this funding is only a start, and is long over due for rainbow communities 🏳️🌈 $3 million over four years has been budget for gender affirming surgeries, and just over $1 million has been budgeted for support for rainbow communities over the next year. We look forward to hearing more about what this may mean for services like ours. Budget documents also state that the frontline early intervention mental health services they create need to meed the needs of rainbow communities, and the exploration of sexual violence prevention initiatives for rainbow communities must be undertaken. Rainbow young people also remain a priority for youth development funding. We are disappointed not to see any clear links to rainbow communities in education funding, but can't wait to see the impacts that the funding in the above areas will create for our community! #wellbeingbudget #budget2019
Our board members Kate and Karen attended the re-opening of the Rainbow Room at Parliament tonight! Now home to six key pieces of legislation that have supported our communities and plenty of flags alongside this beautiful artwork by Elizabeth Kerekere 🏳️🌈

Thanks for celebrating #PinkShirtDayNZ and #idahobit2019 with us Aotearoa! 💖 Bullying is a huge issue, particularly for our rainbow communities and we all have a part to play in ending it 👚 We've put together a blog post with some handy info about bullying - what it is, what to do if you experience or observe bullying and where to get (as a young person) support or elevate a complaint if not being taken seriously. Find the link in our bio 🌈Please share and help spread this info to others to help them speak up about bullying!
Today we were lucky to get to run a training for Te Rito Family Violence Network! 🌷 Family, intimate partner and sexual violence are big issues in rainbow communities that don’t get much air time. Today is Lesbian Visibility Day and a great opportunity to reflect on how amazing our lesbian whānau are! The word lesbian has become a ‘dirty’ word to many rainbow people, and many of us would often hear “that’s a bit lesbian” and “she’s a lesbo” being said by our peers, making us believe that being a lesbian means being predatory, aggressive and weird, but being a lesbian is a beautiful thing to be celebrated, with a vibrant and kind community inclusive of trans and gender diverse lesbians, lesbians of colour, disabled lesbians, and intersex lesbians!
We were so lucky to have some incredible speakers and workshops about takatāpui , Te Ao Māori and tikanga at Shift this year! Learn more about Takatāpui at takatapui.nz #ShiftHui19

Trans rights are human rights and we won't stop until we get them for our trans whānau here in Aotearoa. We're really disappointed to hear about the decision to defer the Births, Deaths, Marriages, and Relationships Registration Bill. We're very hopeful that the bill will still pass after further public consultation and will let you know once there is an opportunity to be involved in that. For now we're sending out lots of love to our trans and gender diverse whānau - we're here with you. Please reach out if you need to talk this through. Cis allies, please show your trans whānau you have their backs through this, and if you're feeling helpless read up on the bill so you can help explain what these changes really mean as conversations about it take place around you. Check out the great resource from Gender Minorities Aotearoa here to equip you with that knowledge: https://genderminorities.com/2019/02/16/accurate-birth-certificates-bdmrr-101/
