Portraits of Maasai children from one of my early exhibitions back in 2013. -- So here's the thing about a career as a creative. When you start out, you have no illusions of success. You're just in it solely for the passion and adventure. You backpack around the world, funding it totally by yourself. Because it doesn't matter - you have nothing to lose. There's not a whole heck of opportunity coming your way anyway, might as well do what your love. Over time though, this starts shifting. You start getting jobs, some you enjoy, some you don't. Suddenly your bookings are filling up and there's less and less time available to do those personal projects that made you want to do this in the first place. Take two weeks off? Insane! Who's paying for it? What jobs will I have to forgoe? Somehow I've actually found success, keep the money flowing, don't blow it! It's funny, in the beginning you think that when you finally 'make it' it means you'll be able to do whatever you want. If you're not careful, it can kinda be the opposite. I visited Tanzania to shoot with the Maasai several times in the early years but haven't been back for so long... for those reasons above. I came across these photos again recently and it's given me a timely reminder. 1. Never lose sight of why you did it in the first place! And 2. For all the young creatives out there.... If you have an idea, a spark, a passion. Trust me, do it right now. There's no better time. Do it when you have nothing to lose and go in with full force. You might not have the chance later!!! Posting this to keep me accountable - looking forward to visiting my beautiful Maasai friends again soon... let's make it happen πŸ‘ŠπŸ»

Last month @natgeoau sent me on assignment to capture Tasmania's rugged landscapes in a new light with @oppomobileau. We filmed a series of videos aimed to inspire everyday travel, exploration and adventure. Here's a few of my favourite Frames, check out the series link in my stories! #nationalgeographic #natgeoau #shotonreno5g

Normally an astro shoot means driving out for hours to get far away enough from light pollution. Here in the Northern Territory outback, I walked 50 metres away from our restaurant (after mains, back for dessert πŸ˜…). Dinner under the stars in Alice Springs on board #TheGhan πŸš‚ @journeybeyondrail #NTAustralia

The Ghan is an iconic Australian rail journey that takes you 3000km through the heart of Australia... stopping at some gorgeous outback wonders like Simpsons Gap in Alice Springs. A couple weeks ago I had the pleasure of exploring the Great Barrier Reef from above and below. It really is an Australian icon and national treasure that is ours to protect and share with the world 🌏 @Uber partnered with @Queensland and Citizens of the Reef to create the scUber experience... a tiny two man submarine that allowed riders to experience the beauty of the reef system in a whole new way... a glimpse of the future of underwater travel. @citizensgbr exists to conserve and protect the Great Barrier Reef and reefs around the world, please visit their page to learn how individual actions can come together to make a real impact on our oceans 🐠 @qantas @queensland @uber #thisisqueensland #qantas #scuber

Thinking about all the beautiful wildlife I've crossed paths with over the years on this big ole Earth. And how important it is we all try do what we can to protect them and their natural habitats (from us. humans suck) Here's a few favourites that never saw the light of day for whatever reason... the last time I was in Cape Town we hiked up Lion's Head for sunrise. I 'forgot' my tripod (more like dreaded carrying it up a mountain) so once at the top was forced to rest the camera in the bushes with a classic ten second timer run. it's funny, some of my favourite shots have actually happened because I've left gear behind and had to compromise. anyway I'm posting this because I'm in town but I'm a few years older and lazier... if it gets reposted on social media it's pretty much the same as putting in the effort again, right? (maybe I can be persuaded to trek it again... who's up for a sunrise sesh in the next couple of days.... πŸ˜‰)

Sooo while we were flying over Swan Island (first picture) our pilot causally mentioned that you can AirBnB the entire island if you like. Um what. Shotgun next time. We landed there briefly (so empty, much peaceful) before heading to rugged and wild Flinders Island for a swim and crayfish on the beach. can't say I knew this place even existed before the trip... but it's straight to the top of the list now 😢😢😢 -- @tasmania @qantas #discovertasmania #tassiestyle

Namibia, 2017. We're halfway through our photography workshop and after a few full on days photographing wildlife, the perfect storm presents itself. Everyone is exhausted but when the lights come out to play, so do we! We tag team between shooting and posing in the truck. It's raining, and the challenge becomes keeping your lens dry between shots. It's also a continual guessing game where the strikes are going to hit. It's dark and wet and we're all spread out around the jeep... fingers crossed there isn't a lion nearby. 🦁😬 But the kind of shots we're getting are unreal. It's hard to replicate the excitement from these kinds of experiences. So many 'what am I doing?' moments over the years... You know it's one thing to say 'I'm glad I have photos to remember these moments' but actually the photo is also the *reason* I'm out in the wilderness soaking wet running around like an idiot. I ain't doing those kind shenanigans for any other purpose! So the photograph creates the memory AND becomes the memory. That's nice ⚑ #behindtheimage

jarradseng

The decisive moment πŸ”₯ -- Picture this... I've arrived in this swordsmith workshop in Kyoto. I've been handed a prototype of the new EOS R, never seen before. The samurai steel is heating up in the furnace. I've had about three minutes to work out how to use this thing. Multiple cameras on me ready to scrutinise my attempt to capture this one moment. I crouch down on the charcoal floor. Do I slow the shutter and try to grab the streaks of ash flying past? What if it's too slow and it all becomes unrecognisable? Or do I freeze the action and capture that slice of a split second? Either way I'm about to get a face full of lava. Is my hair going to burn off? Don't care. Gotta commit. Shit he's started swinging the giant mallet already... *click* One of many memorable moments from 2018.. felt under as much pressure as that molten steel πŸ˜… swipe across to see the BTS

I was recently reunited with the notebook I had with me in the many days of isolation (confined to a single room with no technology or contact with the outside world) before we began filming for Survivor. I suppose I promote a sort of fearless attitude to life most of the time... but there was something very real and very scary about this particular experience. I thought I'd share an extract of what was going through my mind the night before it all began... maybe it'll help someone else going through a scary moment too :) -- "Why am I even doing this? Β I've been asked the question endless times by reporters and production... but do I even really know myself? Β Deep down I do. *This* is terrifying. Β It makes me sick and makes me question whether this is just one risk too many. Β But. I guess… life is meant to be lived in that zone. That space between comfort and greatness. Between what you know and what you fear. That's where I need to be. On the edge. Β Not in the safety of normality, not in the stands with the spectators. So... here I am risking it all... risking embarrassment, failure and humiliation in front of a nationwide audience. #yolo "

this hot air balloon was probably the closest I'll ever get to an actual magic carpet ride in Agrabah 😒 the opening performance of @aladdininaus in Perth last night was breathtaking. The past few days of events and media interviews have had me reflecting on how random my little journey through life has been πŸ˜…. survivor, #fakeaoki, Iceland, giraffes, going viral for getting kicked in the face, touring the world... it's not even really about photography anymore to be honest. and to think the original plan was to become a lawyer is kinda insane. SO anyway I've decided to hastily set up a reddit AMA (ask me anything) which I'll be looking at over the next 48 hours of airport fun. photography, travel, survivor, whatever. This'll likely be the most in depth I can answer questions on any platform (vs IG live video, DMs etc) so hopefully it's a good session ;) Link in bio ✌🏻
