Cover of first French edition of Bright Lights, Big City. Aka Journal of a Night Bird. Very noir, very Celine. Subsequent French editions have been printed with the original English title. #tbt
Next up on my summer rereading the classics list. One of the finest erotic novels ever written from my late friend James Salter. The prose is dazzling, the descriptions of provincial France unmatched.
Fighting a nice McCloud River rainbow trout, which poses with me before returning to the river.
Brought my fly rod to Northern Cali but maybe should have brought skis. Mount Shasta looking cool in June.
One of the best dishes of my recent trip to Spain, tuna roe and cream at Cocina Hermanos Torres, a great Barcelona @michelinguide 2 star headed for 3. Twin brother chefs, great room with a big kitchen right in the middle. Incredible 15 course tasting menu. Hope to return @hermanostorres #tbt #throwbackthursday @curiousgourmet @david_is_good
At @pastisnyc friends and family. Spent many happy hours at the original Pastis despite telling Keith Mcnally 20 years ago that a restaurant in the meatpacking district probably wasn’t a great idea. I lived there at the time. Food better than ever. Photo by @nicolemillernyc who you can see in the mirror to the left.
A very tasty, very obscure, 1959 Rioja from the list at Disfrutar in Barcelona. This Michelin 2 star has El Bulli DNA—the three chefs all worked there and the food is similarly inventive. Gazpacho sandwich, liquid salad—nothing quite what it seemed but most of it delicious. If only the wine list had been as exciting as the tasting menu. The bottle pictured was one of the few treasures. @curious gourmet @david_is_good
Flying to Madrid tonight with an old friend. Never get tired of this one.
Dinner a deux at home after a busy weekend. Wanted to drink some Chave Blanc after my great visit there. Suspected swordfish would be a good match. And I was right. The ‘97 was dark in color. Looked like a write off. And smelled oxidized at first. But sweet and rich on the palate. And then the nose cleaned up. Loved it. Read about my visit in my September @townandcountrymag column. #rhonewine #hermitage
Spring in New York. 70 degrees. Damn I’m glad to be back.
Finally home. Finally some real wine. A very delicate but delectable ‘71 Bouchard Chambertin. Probably way overcropped but the vintage and the vineyard show their excellence. Perfect reward after writing my latest @townandcountrymag column about the insane escalation of Grand Cru vineyard prices in #Burgundy
Ginger margarita at Sip Sip, Harbor Island, Bahamas. Man does not live by wine alone, especially in the islands.
Wow! This will be at its peak in about 30 years and I won’t be around. So great to taste it now in its dewy youth before it goes into hibernation. #burgundy. #drc
I only reluctantly post food photos, in part because I don’t want to put @curiousgourmet out of business. But, hey, I’m in Paris. This is a game pie from my favorite Paris restaurant, L’Astrance, aka @lastrance. I think it’s mostly squab and foie Gras. New dish. But everything here is always great. Chef Pascal Barbot is always in the kitchen. Also had amazing meals at @david_toutain and @lepavillonledoyen
The Oscar Wilde suite at @lhotel_paris, my home away from home this week. He spent his final days here, and wrote, “My wallpaper and i are fighting a duel to the death.” I suspect he’d approve of the current very Wildeish walllpaper. #oscarwilde #findesiecle
Meursault with view. Coche Dury and Notre Dame for lunch at La Tour d’Argent.
Still crazy about her after all these years. #valentinesday2018
I don’t think I entirely approve of my meal at Gianni’s, the restaurant in the Versace mansion in Miami Beach, but the setting is hard to beat and my Huntsman suit in Loro Piana silk seersucker is looking pretty good. @huntsmansavilerow #miamibeach
Looking forward to reading this. And to hearing our recent interview on the Bret Easton Ellis podcast that just posted today. Hundredth BEE podcast. Congrats my friend. Https//www.patreon.com/breteastonellispodcast. #breteastonellis
Spotted by a friend at a bar in Williamsburg.
Tater Tots with caviar and creme fraiche at @unionsquarecafe. Excellent start to my birthday dinner. Just the two of us tonight.
Tragic start to last night’s dinner. My generous, hapless pal dropped an 89 Leroy Corton Charlemagne. We were tempted to lick the floor.
Strong lineup of Coche. Surprisingly the 01 CC was the unquestioned standout. Thanks Bill. Best present of the season. Along with the Truffles. #whiteburgundy #burgundy #cortoncharlemagne
Somehow this Sunday-night-at-home ‘91 Chevillon Vaucrains is definitely getting me in the Holiday Spirit. #burgundy
Having an after dinner amaro on the terrace. I love New York in October.
17 years ago there was a plume of smoke downtown. Sad to remember but I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else today. #neverforget #iloveny
The best white wines of the summer, and the rarest. Mags of 88 Coche Perrieres and Corton Charlemagne. Won’t see these again #burgundy #Coche #chardonnay
Very rare Christophe Roumier Charmes. Never seen another vintage. Delicious. Young. Actually won more votes than 91 Ponsot Clos St Denis. Thanks @neiltyson123 #burgundy #roumier
At le Bilbouquet in Sag Harbor with @ericripert. Looking fairly pleased with ourselves. I think we had canary for dinner.
RIP Einstein, our beloved emu, who became a local news star when he escaped a few years back and freaked out quite a few Bridgehampton residents as he strode about town.
Stylistic mash-up: Hawaiian night at Wyntoon, against a California-Bavarian backdrop.
Sunset, Eden Roc, Krug Rose.
Remembering my Dad, Barry, on #fathersday
King crab season again at Oriental Garden in Chinatown. This one looks big enough for me.
Couple of reds, Roumier & Vogue, for lunch with very tasty salmon creek farms pork belly at @perseny #burgundy #hautecuisine #musigny
In the cellar at Chateau Lafite with my old pal @jancisrobinson in my new Cifonelli jacket getting psyched for our big tasting and dinner. Highlights were the ‘85, ‘76, ‘59, ‘55 (a great year in many regards) the ‘34 and the 1881. Wow! Very grateful to our hosts, the Rothschilds. #bordeaux #lafite #chateaulafiterothschild @cifonelli_official @lorenzocifonelli
