We shared our yard with a pair of nesting tree swallows this year. In return, they allowed us to peak in on their frenetic little lives for brief moments like this one. #birding #montanabirds #treeswallow #wildlife #wildlifephotography #sonya7riii #cognisys

In winter of 2017/18, the Wapiti Lake pack gifted us with a few unforgettable days. This young wolf soon turned into a playful pup in the snow - scattering ravens and tussling with its siblings - but for a brief moment, I'm certain it was looking at my soul. Episode 2 of Epic Yellowstone coming your way this Sunday - Return of the Predators.

“Nobody loves the sage grouse more than I do” says our Interior Secretary as he and this administration move to rollback sage grouse protection on millions of acres of federal land as a favor to oil and gas companies. As I work through the edit of our Sage Grouse scene in our upcoming show, I see real love of this bird expressed in the insanely beautiful footage shot by @3bearsmedia. They’re a striking and fascinating species that represents only a fraction of the natural beauty found in the sage brush habitat. Research these birds and the issues if you haven’t. Understand that to oil companies and this embarrassment of a Montanan, they are no more than an obstacle to more wealth. #montana #sagegrouse #birds #nature #editing

For a few months now, I have been out of the field editing part of the Yellowstone series I’ve poured so much into these last few years. If my time in my office has taught me one thing, it is that some part of these animals is lost in the translation to pictures. Nothing can replace being among them; experiencing that connection. Locking eyes with a wolf is transformative. It is futile to even try and recreate the moment in words. I don’t know how many moments this wolf known as 926F and I shared over the past years. I’m thankful for each. Last week, a hunter woke up, took his $19 hunting tag, drove or perhaps walked toward the park boundary, loaded his weapon, and killed her. I hope, likely in vain, that in the moment before he shot she looked at him and changed him for the better. #wolf #yellowstonenationalpark #trophyhunting #926f #wildlife #wildlifephotography

Much of my job as a filmmaker depends on understanding the form of nature; reading and anticipating the relationships it contains. Over time, I grow confident in my ability; even a little smug. Then I visit Florida, and that idea is exposed for what it is: a delusion. In the Everglades, I cannot help but feel that deciphering Yellowstone has been like untying a shoelace while 2000 miles southeast, there is vast knot of fishing line waiting for me…underwater…in the dark. Luckily, others have endured the chaos of the swamps to reveal rare, tiny bits of order: Ghost Orchids. With @carltonward @macstonephoto @peter_houlihan @bendicci.

Birds have the habit of humbling me as a filmmaker. Few other animals require the patience, perseverance, and healthy dose of luck necessary to tell their story. This mountain bluebird on the other hand is ready for her close-up. Six eggs under her. #birdsofinstagram #mountainbluebird #nesting #mommabird #audubonsociety

Few birds are as fun to watch the New Zealand fantail. They are bold and often perform their insect hunting aerobatics within feet of people. They are experts at both hunting and humbling the photographer who attempts to photograph them. Photos taken: 506. photos in focus: 1. #fantail #newzealand #wanaka #wildlife

On a shoot yesterday, @3bearsmedia looked into the eyes of a 30lb snapping turtle and pointed out that we had another chance to see the solar eclipse. I remember seeing these creatures as a kid, fearing the lost fingers promised from messing with them. This, however, was my first time to truly get to know one. I found these animals to be remarkable; 200+ million years of evolution terminating in something that seems unchanged. While I still recommend keeping you fingers close, I’d urge anyone who comes across a snapping turtle to take a closer look. #snappingturtle #turtle #livingdinosaur #montana #eclipse #eyeball #macrophotography #wildlifephotography #reptiles #wildlife @grizzlycreekfilms @backscattervideophoto

The beauty of combine harvesters. For the most part, I am a wildlife filmmaker, unable to direct or influence the animals I am filming. I try to predict the coming action and wait for it to come into my frame. Even with non-wildlife, this is now my default strategy. Last night, it was not a great leap of imagination to picture these combines as some strange, wild creatures moving through the wheat fields of central Montana. #montana #montanawheat #wheat #harvest #grain #farms #farming #dji #drone #djiinspire2 #aerial #patterns #harvester

I think caves are where nature goes to be weird; to experiment with otherworldly forms and toy with the senses of those who enter them. Lofthellir cave near Myvatn, Iceland. #Iceland #cave #ice #myvatn #lofthellir #nature #naturemusic #stalagmites #caving #timelapse

I have a soft spot for long exposure photography. Photography is normally about THE moment frozen in time. However, by manipulating the amount of light that my camera receives, I can lengthen my exposure time. The result is a photo that contains many moments layered on top of each other; a photo that blends moments across time to create something unseeable to us. #iceland #waterfalls #longexposure #blurred #water #photography #panasonicgh5 #natgeostudentexpeditions

The deception of icebergs. Our glances at nature are short-sighted, fleeting things. with that glance, we only rarely gain more than a fraction of understanding. I spent several hours among icebergs today; in the water and on the shore. I learned that this place changes, not at a glacial pace, but quickly, fueled by wind, time, and tide. I would love to come back and further explore these icebergs through time lapse. #nature #natgeostudentexpeditions #icebergs #timelapse #longexposure #iceland #jökulsárlón

Gullfoss, Iceland. There is no shortage of waterfalls in Iceland but this one certainly stands out. More to come as I travel with #natgeostudentexpeditions in #iceland. #gullfoss #waterfall #longexposure #nature #nationalgeographic
