Wither the feel-good restaurants? The ones the restore the spirit, the ones that makes us feel fed in ways that transcend the obvious, the ones where the hospitality isn’t an algorithmic triple axel but human, heartfelt—“how’s the family?” You know the type: @hearthrestaurant in New York; @rusticcanyon in Los Angeles. To that list, add @cadencerestaurant in Philadelphia. Pleasures, simple and otherwise, are the point here. And for once, you don’t have to choose between them. Before you taste it, you smell it. A block away as your taxi rumbles up East 6th Street; hanging thick and sweet in the air as you approach the entrance; then inside the dining room, an invisible, ambrosial swirl. You’re smelling masa, a fundamental building block of Mexican cuisine, and the pride of @suerteatx in Austin. Hit the link in my profile for more #FWBNR @foodandwine @chiefnunez @samhellmanmass 2️⃣

In a moment when NYC counter-culture feels like it’s on life support, it’s easy to forget the great Gotham that was. So praise be to @frenchettenyc—someone’s got to keep the lights on. Here is pewter and leather and one drink too many. Here are escargot over eggs so softly scrambled you could sip them from an aperitif glass. And at every table, in every corner, a deal, a date, a plan hatched, a great hat, a spectacular cat-eye, a how-do-they-even-know-each-other group. Dinner here, a return to form. Consider @konbi the food world equivalent of a Kacey Musgraves tune—catchy like a song of summer, but also deeply resonating in the culture. In other words, love is indeed a wild thing and @akiraakuto + @nickemontgomery’s Japanese sandos are here to stay. You may already recognize Konbi’s Instagram-darling egg salad, but the b-side French pastries—including the best canelé in the US—are the sleeper hits. Point is, it’s all well and good if you buy the album for the single, so long as, at some point, you listen all the way through. You forget yourself quickly @barkumiko in Chicago—the sound of @momose_julia’s ⬆️ mixing spoon clinking against Yarai crystal, the lamp light glow, the strange thrill of bierschnaps, shochu and cola-nut infused cream conspiring in a hot cocoa trompe l’oeil. Then come chefs @noahsandoval and @mariyaleniserussell to put you back on terra firma. A pork bun in a party dress, with a corsage of mint leaves and chamomile flowers. A platter of short ribs with DIY garnishes. Too soon it’s time to leave. Out onto the sidewalk you go. Time picks up just where you left it. It all arrives fast and fragrant @addanyc, chaat jockeying for space next to butter chicken, piles of naan brushed with butter, cans of Indian Thums Up soda. This is the work of chef Chintan Pandya, who arrived in America from India six years ago and found it lacking in the sort of food he’d want to eat—the kind of market-driven, high-quality, everyday dishes he’d grown up with. From there, Adda took root. Hit the link in my profile for more #FWBNR @foodandwine 6️⃣

Boston’s @foxandknife remembers the year @chefkarenakunowicz spent mending a broken heart and folding tortellini as a young cook in Modena, but the James Beard Award winner has a light touch around Italian regionality. You might not stumble across this hot focaccia packed with oozing taleggio around Piazza della Pomposa, but in Boston, in the care of Akunowicz, it feels exactly right. At @restaurant_indigohtx in Houston, chef Jonny Rhodes delivers a thesis in five courses—the historic oppression and creativity of the African and African American people, told through the lens of his neo-soul food. Some dishes offer an opportunity to engage with the foods of survival—an earthy “coffee” made with toasted okra seeds, or potato ashcakes, which reference the rationing of meat for enslaved children. Rhodes is a gifted cook and so while all of this may be delicious, none of it is comfortable. Sometimes the things we need the most are the hardest to swallow. A neighborhood charmer in Philly; a tear in the space-time continuum in Chicago; a sandwich shop with a hidden talent—just a few highlights on my BEST NEW RESTAURANTS list for @foodandwine, out today on an internet near you! 🔗 in my profile to read about the 10 places that most moved me this year, and watch this space throughout the day to meet them. First up @pieceofmeatbutcher in New Orleans, a hybrid butcher shop and restaurant where everything has a certain serotonin t-shirt cannon je ne sais quoi. #fwbnr 🔟

I’m proud to have a small part in supporting the mission of @HousingWorksBks, a nonprofit that provides services to homeless and low-income New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS. This year I’ve joined the benefit committee for “A Feast for the Books,” Housing Works’ annal fundraiser, where you can taste food from some of my favorite restaurants, including @superiorityburger, @addanyc + @donangienyc, bid in a silent auction, and meet fellow committee members like @PKgourmet, @ruth.reichl, @mayukh.sen, @juliabainbridge, @kimberchou + @alisoneroman. The event is June 12 and tickets start at just $50 (link in profile) — will I see you there? #AFeastForTheBooks2019 #actup

The biggest smiles in Chicago? #fwbnc, memoirist, resplendent human and now James Beard Award-winning chef Kwame Onwuachi took home his first #jbfa medal last night. Congratulations @chefkwameonwuachi, and so many other winners who set my bottom lip aquiver: Seattle jabroni, @williamsbrady + @bcanlis + the @canlisrestaurant family, the dearest @jparkato, my brother @mikesolomonov, two perfect restaurants in NYC @viacarota and @frenchettenyc, @mashamabailey (whose parents I sat behind while she accepted her award and reader, I wept). And for the chefs who didn’t take the stage last night, the ones who didn’t win this time, and the ones who feel unseen, and the ones who were on the line while the walk-off music played, whose service doesn’t stop for a red carpet, whose work cuts close to the bone. You matter. You matter. You matter. 📷 @blakewmackay

In Riga. In Pittsburgh. In Poway. In my own hometown, where I remember the occasional police vigil outside our synagogue on Yom Kippur—just in case. I am not an observant Jew (in fact on an optimistic day you could call me agnostic). But I am, absolutely, a Jew. Sister of Hayyim and Joshua; daughter of Yonah and Devorah; great-grandaughter of Monya, whose guitar chords and Ukrainian folk songs only my father remembers. A family tree of exiles, of refugees, of survivors, of tailors, of janitors, of pharmacists, of hatmakers, of bootleggers when things got too thin. Tonight a few near-and-dear New York Jews gather in my home to break bread (this gorgeous challah is from @breadsbakery) and to light shabbat candles, in the way of our forbears but very much on our own terms: lights to call in the legacy of fortitude that has defined our shared culture; lights to remind us of our diaspora, our otherness, but also our endurance; lights to shine into the dark corners, into the unsafe places. Shabbat shalom. 🕯 🕯
