Destruction of the Amazon forest increased by 60% in June. I did a short documentary about this subject for CNN. Please watch it - Thymann.com Amazon (link in bio). As much as it's a depressing subject the film is worth a view (well I would say so wouldn't I). This is my partner Alex heading up towards surface air on the exploration dive. When exploring the caves we started to see organic matter and silt coming from one direction, which is sign of surface access. It could had been a cenote, but turned out to only be a small confined air pocket. You don't take your regulator (air supply) out when existing the water and entering the air, most airpocket are toxic. Dead matter decompose and release gases we cannot breath. Just another safety aspect to think of when cave diving. The total dive time for the exploration was about 3 hours, so three hours under water. We used 3 tanks each with different gases for different depths. However it was a great success, we managed to connect the system we are exploring with another, thereby combining them into one bigger system. Pic is shot on a small pocket cam for ref only. Hoping to go back to do an editorial feature. #exploring #cavediving #mexico #underwaterphotography #expedition

I'm going exploring today. We are looking at underwater caves on the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico, and going diving with the purpose of mapping them. Access is through the floor in the jungle, rope ladder down into the water. Image from past exploration #cavediving #explore #diving #underwaterphotography #mexico

I photographed this bulls shark when doing research for FLOWS, ultimately decided against including the sharks in the film. This evening the documentary is screening in Corzumel as the Cousteau Future Ocean Society requested to have a screening. What an honour that the foundation of my childhood here wants to show my film. #Cousteau #futureocensociety #mexico #underwaterphotography #documentaryphotography #bullshark

The Amazon rain forest canopy view. It's amazing to see the forest from above and hear it too. So many birds and the sound of the rain. I was travelling in Brazil making a short documentary for CNN about the current status and the election of Jair Bolsonaro will impact the indigenous people and affect defoestation. More stills and the film on Thymann.com #documentaryphotography #deforestation #brazil #rainforest #landscapephotography #climatecrisis

The Amazon River flows around 6,400 km from deep in the Amazon rain forest to the ocean. Defoestation cause soil degregation and with climate change causing increased precipitation more nutrients enter the ocean . I did a film for CNN about the Amazon and the threats facing the forert. Watch it, link on my site. Made in collaboration with @abrown___

On Tuesday June 25th I'll have a private preview of a new film. Flows - It is All Connected If you are in Cancun and want to come DM. Already confirmed are key scientists and NGOs FROM Mexico. The idea is to get feedback to see if the film can be better. #underwaterphotography #mexico #turtle

Why the tux? Earlier this week @projectpressure show MELTDOWN premiered at the Natural History Museum in Vienna and I was giving a talk at the opening. I founded Project Pressure in 2008 with the aim of visualizing climate change. In 2008 there was a financial crisis, it took the world's governments about 15 days to decide on bold and dramatic action pumping trillions of dollars into the financial sector. Climate change is a bigger threat to us that the financial turbulence experienced then, yet we have not yet made any real meaningful action. I hoped to create a project that could inspire action, it inspired me to complete a degree in Environmental Science, review my work and what I communicate about. Hope MELTDOWN can inspire some meaningful action. #climatechange #meltdown #projectpressure

Today is #worldoceansday As with so much else it should be simple, look after what we care about and this planet needs. Possibly surprising, the oceans generate more oxygen that the world's forests and it is a realm largely unexplored. Almost all plastic that ends up in the sea come from a dosin rivers in Asia. But those rivers are in the same place where the West exports their plastic waste to, so some waste is just shipping half way round the world only to be flushed out in the ocean anyway. I have a few films on my website that could be good to watch today. Flows with music by Thom Yorke, Bikini Atoll for CNN #landscapephotography #ocean #aerialphotography

The wrecks from nuclear testing are as deep as 65 m. It requires special training to visit them. I was there filming for CNN creating a mini documentary (link in bio). Seeing the result of the power of an atomic bomb is both humbling and frightening but also incredible fascinating. #diving #atomicbomb #bikiniatoll #underwaterphotography

The helium balloon is floating over the Rhone Glacier. I was there creating new work in collaboration with @simonnorfolkstudio We had light on the balloon creating this kind of Ray of God feel. The glacier is covered in fabric in some attempt to slow the melt and preserve the ice grotto business. Works are currently at show at Luisotti Gallery in Santa Monica #climatechange #landscapephotography #heliumballoon

This is from the top of Chimbarozo in Ecuador at 6263 M I had been walking up at in the dark as the snow and ice is more stable in the frosty night. The top was covered in an ice storm so all of me and my equipment was covered in ice. I talk about some of my adventures in the new issue of @jocksandnerds which is out today. 20+ pages so lots of images to look at also. #adventure #mountaineering #icestorm #expedition

I'm at Soho Radio London to record a two hour show with @jocksandnerds to talk about @projectpressure and some of the expeditions I've done. This pic is from Switzerland walking off the Rhone Glacier #expedition #Switzerland #climatechange

In the Amazon. Sure. How many trees? I look up and then I get picky, difficult to explain but some trees are better than others. Makes me think I'm some sort of forest fashionista. Anyway here is a pic from a recent trip to the Amazon where I reported for CNN working with @abrown___ on a documentary film piece. Link in bio and all that.... But really watch that film, what is happening in Brazil has huge effects, both globally and local (what a cliche BTW). But watch it, it is important. #Brazil #Amazon #climatechange

The world's largest open ion ore mine is in Kiruna, and the soil defoestation has forces the town to relocate. Houses are being demolished or moved on flatbed trucks. Too much detail in the shot for all the small screens.... #toomuchdetail #landscapephotography #viewpoint #environmentalphotography #mining

klausthymann

Back in Kiruna, the Arctic town being moved. Yes the town is being relocated to a new town centre. Kiruna is home to the world's largest open ion ore mine with tunnels deeper than 1300 m. Mining has been taking place for more than a century and all the soil removed is creating cracks and deforestations making the ground unstable - this is why the town is being moved. This is the old townhall, it is being demolished right now. I have been documenting this since 2013, the project can be found on my site. #landscapephotography #kiruna #documentaryphotography #arctic #architecturephotography

klausthymann

I was travelling in the Amazon and reporting for @bemenews CNNs digital channel. We looked at how the new governments policies will influence the indigenous communities and the forest. The effect on the forest has direct consequences for the global climate and therefore #climatechange A highlight was seeing pristine forest with century old trees. #Brazil #amazonforest

This expedition shot is from Nepal. I led a team far far up the Langtang Velley where we reached the front of an unnamed glacier. I wanted to photograph this for @projectpressure The reports about climate change are getting worse and worse, I love the cold and the ice and snow on this planet. With we could try to keep at least some ot it. Then I'll still be able to camp and sleep in the snow. #exploring #expedition #climatechange #nepal #landscapephotography

I spend a fair amount in caves, most under water. I photographed this dry cave for @wireduk it is isolated so does not connect with other systems, that in turn means there are unique microbes that scientists hope can one day be used for developing new antibiotics #cave #science #landscapephotography

working on image selection for @projectpressure upcoming show at Natural History Museum in Vienna. Glaciers are key indicators of climate change as recession only come from long term temperature trends. With that much importance, one is surprise to find out the vast majority are not being monitored and there are some that are not even named. Like this glacier in Nepal. I was there on expedition, walking for days to reach it, we camped on frozen ground every night and it was amazing. It has snowed during the night and I took this picture at dawn. Seeing the epic landscape I ran towards the ridge getting my tripod out like the excited kid I am. #landscapephotography #glacier #climatechange #projectpressure #nepal #behavelikeachild

View from my hotel in Gaza. It is right new to the UN for safety reasons. It would be a PR fiasco if Israeli rockets hit the UN so being right next to them kind of provides some safety. #gaza #safetyfirst #documentaryphotography

Location scouting in #gaza. The bombed out airport is all grey concrete and has some sculptural properties. Hoping to film in pink light before sunset, the all grey will colour nicely. #gaza #landscapephotography #destruction

View from La Paz, Bolivia. Around 99% of the world's glaciers are retreating and Bolivia has already lost some. Glaciers helps the stability of water in rivers. As such they are hugely important for agriculture, drinking water and other uses. In the Andes the consequences are already being felt. Shot for @projectpressure #climatechange #landscapephotography #glacier

On top of the Amazon forest. I've been working on a piece for @bemenews with @abrown___ filming in the Amazon region looking at how Brazil's new president's policies are affecting the people and can impact deforestation. Just boarded a ferry to Corzumel, filming coral reefs today. Ocean acidification (caused by increased CO2) mixed with warming seas is a major threat. The reef of Corzumel are supposedly in good condition. Let's see. Working on follow up film to Flows. #Mexico #techdiving #underwaterphotography

Before sunrise there is little light (well we know that) but it's flat and without much contrast and can make landscapes seem almost like paintings. I was travelling in Canada and the jetlag got me up early for this shot. #canada #landscapephotography #lake

This is the mount Speke viewed from a distance, and yes it is a glacier at the top. Speak is one of the three peeks of the Rwenzori Mountains in Uganda. I launched and expedition for @projectpressure going into Congo from the Uganda side to find out what was left of the glaciers. Because of war it had not been done for decades. The result was there was more ice than the locals thought but still climate change will melt the glaciers away soon. Equatorial glaciers exist only because of the altitude, the Rwenzori ones are all at about 5000 m The harsh light and lots of UV radiation makes extraordinary plants grow there. #projectpressure #glacier #uganda #expedition #explore #landscapephotography

What about those new years resolutions... I was documenting urban football players in Hong Kong, they were playing on fake grass pitches between the skyscrapers. During the break they smoked. I'm not sure what to think of this. There was something quite liberating about it somehow. #smoking #HongKong #sportsphotography #portraitphotography #newyearsresolution

Analogue fireworks inspired by underwater light refractions. From a period when I was shooting more fashion work than I currently do. It is really just a paper background with holes punshed using a pencil, well add light and smoke = voila. Happy New Year #fashionphotography #underwater #Fireworks

Still from a film i did for Björn Borg. We played tennis across the US / Mexican border (for real). It too months of planning and we could just not get any permission from US agencies, mainly the US Border Patrol. In the end my strategy was to place the entire crew, drones etc on the Mexican side and only have the US player on US soil. We did get every permission from the Mexican side including the military to fly drones by the border. Follow link in bio and see the film titled "Borg Open"

View from the surface looking down into the pit, a Cenote in Mexico. I've done about 40 dives there and it's still on of the most amazing places to submerge oneself. But only when it's not too busy. We rented the whole place for photography, like for the a shot I did of Nery. #underwaterphotography #freediving #mexico

If you look careful you can see me in an orange jacket. Sometimes when shooting in remote locations I get dropped by helicopter, then the pilot lands and turn off the engine. This is so save costs as helicopter is charged by the minute of flight time. Then standing on a ridge or some other inaccessible place I can do my work without being rushed. This pic is from New Zealand of one of the many glaciers on the Southern Island. On expedition for @projectpressure #newzealand #expedition #projectpressure #climatechange #wedonthavetime #glacier

I love this time of year when the trees are without leaves and the fog rolls in. #landscapephotography #fog #nightphotography

klausthymann

I'm obsessed. The halocline, it is the place where salt and fresh water meet. Due to differences in density they two don’t mix. Deep in the underwater caves in Mexico there is very little movement in the water so the border becomes this very sharp line, the moment you dive there you disturb this magical underwater mirror and the water becomes blurred. Going back very soon, can’t wait. #Mexico #Cavediving #underwaterphotography #exploring

Freerunning in Gaza, this shot is from the bombed out airport in Gaza. I am back in touch with the team seeing if we can maybe create a film together telling their incredible story of how Parkour is a positive way to overcome obstacles.
