In the early twentieth century, many Bengali sailors arrived in the US settled into communities of color, passing as Black as a way to bypass anti-Asian immigration laws at that time. Bobby Alam's story navigates an individual case of this history Explore Alam’s dressing room set inside the kind of juke joint where he would have spent his evenings constructing and performing his adopted identity as a musician. See his zoot suit, embellished with Indian kantha style embroidery, as well as old handbills and concert posters, musical compositions, video documentation from Alam’s rehearsals, and private recordings. These clues reveal the staged and dual nature of Alam’s identity, which subtly trespassed the lines between reality and fiction. Pigeonhole: The Life and Work of Bobby Alam opens this Saturday at 6PM!
