There is this new thing we have been trying with our friends lately called “let’s not sleep at all and spend the night climbing a volcano.” It isn’t that we love torturing ourselves but these trails are fully exposed and offer no shade during the day, so this has been a great way to allow the dogs to join us for a cool and safe hike up. It has also been a great way to learn just how bitchy I get when I am sleep deprived. Tired, cold and questioning our sanity, Arlo and I tackeld our second volcano summit together this weekend! A memory I will cherish the rest of my life - one well worth losing a night of sleep for! — #ilovemydog #alpinestart #rescuedogsrock #dogmomlife

Arlo is a pest. He likes to chew up sticks, jump from high places and eat random objects. This scares me when it comes to his wellbeing. Did you know that the average cost of pet insurance a month is only $41 (which full disclosure varies based on breed, age and zip code)? Did you also know that three of the most common claims are for diarrhea/gastritis (you know that whole eating random objects thing I just mentioned?), ingested foreign objects (you know those sticks I said he chews?) and intervertebral disc disease (you know those jumps from high places I was talking about?). Since I can’t keep him in a bubble and restrict everything he does (though I’d like to), my next best option was a @FigoPet Pet Insurance policy so he is covered financially in case of sickness or emergency. I’ve said it before and I will say it again -  I would rather be safe than sorry and it is a huge peace of mind having him enrolled! I would much rather pay the premium each month and never need the coverage, but if I ever do, I sleep better knowing I will have the resources available to help pay for his care! Just look at this guy! Isn’t he the best “Roll Model”? When Finn is in his wheelchair he seems to attract attention wherever we go. People go out of their way to come ask about him, to pet him, to tell him what a brave and amazing guy he is and he sucks it all up! In fact, now he just assumes that every person we see wants to give him attention. We will be walking along and he will just start going up to random people or wait for them to come to him. The other day we took him to a brewery and he caused such a commotion - he wanted to be sure to stop by every table to say a proper hello. It took us about 20 minutes to get to our table! His legs may not work great but apparently his ears work more than fine - he loves hearing what a good boy he is and all the people cheering him on! It is pretty heartwarming to watch! As Scott Hamilton once said “The only disability in life is a bad attitude!” and Finn certainly DOES NOT have one of those! He also had a very good vet visit last week with @feltondvm - he had improved liver values and a lump that only returned fatty tissue! Go Finn!!! ❤️ — #FINNspirational #dogmomlife #ilovemydog #rescuedogsrock

It’s National Hot Dog Day and Arlo is super excited to celebrate with his @stellaandchewys #ad Wild Weenies! While he enjoys real hot dog chunks every once in a while, he loves these freeze dried raw weenies packed with beef, beef liver and beef kidneys and more! Today, we are going to show you a “hot dog” Wild Weenie eating contest to see how many Finn and Arlo can eat during one 15 second story slide - stay tuned to my stories to follow along! While we are on the topic, have you ever wondered why America’s favorite grilling food is is called a Hot Dog? Well, I learned that In the mid-19th century, German immigrant butchers in the United States began selling variations of sausages, some of which were thin and long, like the dog breed dachshund. They called these dachshund sausages. Over time, the phrase had been changed to “hot dog.” Check out the link in my bio for a $5 off coupon for any Stella & Chewy’s product - Arlo highly recommends these Weenies! — #stellaandchewys #ilovemydog #dogmomlife #rescuedogsrock

I have always been a big fan of “lets go take a drive.” Some days the only thing we get accomplished is driving down forest roads looking for a cool place to sleep. Sometimes we will pass a road and turn around to go follow it just because it “looks cool.” The pacific northwest national forests all contain mazes of forest roads. Sometimes they will go on forever with nothing interesting to see. Sometimes you will drive for miles and have to turn around because the road becomes too rough or a tree has fallen and blocked your way. Sometimes, more often than not, after miles and miles of looking we end up in a treed spot with no views. There is a lot of misadventure in “lets go take a drive,” here, and that is just fine with me. I have found the dead ends are always my favorite - they never lead to another place but sometimes, like here, the view and the fire pit at the end make you feel like you hit the jackpot! Falling asleep and waking up to this view of Mount Adams was pretty amazing! — #ilovemydog #rescuedogsrock #vanlife #dogmomlife

Last year on July 13th, this crazy little lemur entered my life. Just shy of being a year old Arlo was surrendered to the animal shelter. His previous owners bought him to be a guard dog and chained him up outside to a dog house. Apparently they didn’t feel he was doing his job well enough so they took him to the shelter. Until then, all Arlo knew about life was what he experienced within the reach of his chain. He had never been in a home, he had no idea what toys were and no one had taught him a single thing. He spent a month at the shelter where they learned he was friendly but not very interested in people and he loved other dogs. They also learned that he was incredibly reactive and obsessed with cars. Listening for them, watching them, chasing them. His world revolved around cars. Arlo’s first year with us came with a lot of challenges but his obsessive behavior was by far the hardest to overcome and I was terrified I wasn’t going to be able to keep him safe. While a lot has changed for him I can say without a doubt the biggest influence in his life this past year was Kerry @flashdogtraining . Prior to having Arlo trained there were days I would be so frustrated and in tears because I just couldn’t get through to him. Kerry, through structure and guidance, gave Arlo the gift of freedom. It is an incredible feeling to be able to trust him now and I smile watching him be a dog, living his best life off leash, hiking trails, doing campsite perimeter checks, chasing toys, running beaches and playing in the snow. Thank you for shifting the outcome of our first year @flashdogtraining , for making his car obsession a thing of the past and for setting us up for many more years of safe adventuring together! Cheers to 367 days together, Arlo! You’re the best lemur around! — #ilovemydog #rescuedogsrock #dogmomlife #hellofrom #washington

Who here is obsessed with the National Lampoon’s Vacation movies? In my family we watch them A LOT. Last week my brother, his wife and my seven year old nephew, Toren, came to visit us from Arizona. We toured around Oregon and Washington and showed them as much as we could. Whenever my family gets together, Vacation quotes just randomly start getting dropped, though I had no idea Toren had picked up on that. At one point we were all riding in the family truckster and I mentioned that I had to go to the bathroom… out of nowhere Toren looks right at me and says, “find a bush, Audrey!” I have never laughed so hard in my life and I couldn’t have been more proud! I love that he is already carrying on the tradition! While this story has nothing to do with this photo I couldn’t help but share! — #ilovemydog #rescuedogsrock #dogmomlife

Yesterday morning we watched the sunrise from the summit of Mount St. Helens! This was my first time climbing and Arlo’s first volcano climb! It was crazy standing on its rim, looking down into the horseshoe shaped crater (steam rising actively from the center) and imagining what it must have looked like before its eruption. I’ve watched a billion of them but if you’re interested check out the link in my bio to see a little bit more about the eruption! The views from the summit were top notch with Mount Rainier the stealing the beauty of the morning sun! — #ilovemydog #rescuedogsrock #dogmomlife

The other day @flashdogtraining and I were talking about noises and feels that make us quiver. For her it was the sound of an apple being bitten into and touching the cotton balls in the top of medicine bottles. I share her the cotton ball cringe with her - I have to use tweezers to take them out. My all time WORST though? Styrofoam. I HATE IT. All of my body hair is standing up just thinking about the sound and feel of it. The noise it makes while being pulled out of a box is quite possibly the worst sound in the entire world to me. What about you guys? What noises make you cringe? ANYWAY - I am getting excited for the weekend and week ahead - my brother, sister-in-law and nephew are coming into town for the week from Arizona and I can’t wait to show them all of my favorite Oregon things! Today is Arlo’s SECOND BIRTHDAY! What a stud he has become! He spent his first birthday in an animal shelter so it makes my heart happy that he gets to spend his second birthday with his family! Happy birthday my crazy little Lemur! This past year has been one change after another for you - you learned to swim, hike, backpack, play with toys, play dead, chase squirrels, run on the beach and join the waves as they meet the shore. I love watching you enjoy these things. You learned that rolling in everything is fun and that you can fall asleep on just about any surface. Most importantly you learned that there are people that are going to love you the rest of your life! You have brought so much energy to our life little buddy and I cant ever thank you enough for that - we all needed it. I love that you are a pest, curious and immature. That you can turn anything into a good time and I love that you chose us to share your life with you! I want time to slow down so that you can stay young forever but I look forward to spending all your birthdays together! Today, to celebrate, we are hiking, swimming and then going out for a dog friendly birthday dinner! For his birthday, he is definitely getting some extra treats but we are also donating money to his shelter in his name and most importantly, I am renewing his @figopet insurance plan for a year! He is too young now to know the value of health insurance but I think it is the smartest gift I could possibly give him! If at any time he is sick or injured, I would do everything possible to help him - @figopet is critical for help with that! HAPPY BIRTHDAY ARLO MONKEY! Finn LOVES his new wheelchair (his ORV as we all it) so much you guys! He still is adjusting to it and we still only do about ten minutes three times a day to build his strength, but he is definitely getting the hang of it. Once in a while he will still bang into something or get a wheel stuck on a root or a rock but he is learning how to navigate it better and understands it is back there. This weekend he wheeled himself multiple times to the water to play stick, dig rocks and swim. While he can stay in the chair in shallow water we take him out quite a bit and let him swim. Finn has always lived for swimming and I think his favorite part of having his wheels is the ability to get himself in and out of the water again like a real dog! It is so fun to watch him go barreling right into the water in it! A weekend filled with sun, lakes, good friends, dogs and a happy swimming Finn - what could be better? I hope you all had a great weekend! — #rescuedogsrock #ilovemydog #dogmomlife

There are many things I have done differently with Arlo than I did with Tonto and Finn when they were younger. Things I wish I had done for them, but I was a first time dog Mom and I just didn’t know to do at the time. For starters I enrolled him with  @figopet pet insurance. Tonto having cancer and Finn struggling with immobility, this is something I wish I had gotten for them when they were younger. I signed Arlo up for a plan right away to avoid any pre-exisiting conditions and to make sure I am covered in case of sickness or emergency. Another thing I have found crucial is preventative care for teeth, joints and digestion. Dental: I try to brush Arlo’s teeth at least twice a week to ward off any issues there the best I can while they do have toothpaste for dogs I just take a wet toothbrush and brush his gums for as long as he will allow me to. Hip and Joint: Arlo gets @wagworthynaturals Hip & Joint daily and I highly recommend adding this to prevent joint issues and arthritis later in life. Arlo is extremely active and dog mobility is all about healthy cartilage - it forms a protective cushion between a dog's bones - a spongy cushion that acts as a shock absorber where the shoulder, hip, knee, elbow, wrist & other bones come together. When cartilage becomes weak bone rubs against bone creating inflammation, pain and immobility. This is why it is important to supplement and build healthy cartilage as they age, not just when they show joint pain. Digestion: just like us, the majority of a dogs immune system is in its gut - it contains about 70% of all immune cells. Keeping the digestive system running healthily is crucial and adding a probiotic - full of good bacteria for the gut - is an easy way to improve digestive health. Arlo gets 1/4 of goat milk Kefir per day! While I am not a vet, I received a nod off approval for all of these from mine (please consult yours before before starting preventative care for your dog) and I do believe these small additions will greatly help his overall health! — @figopet #figopet #figofamily #dogmomlife #rescuedogsrock #dogsthathike

Finn is living proof that no matter how hard you try, you can’t always protect breakable things. Bones. Hearts. Spirits. Sometimes things break and they can’t get put back together the way they were before, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be wonderfully different. The past few weeks we noticed a shift in Finn. He seemed to be restless, unmotivated and bored. He seemed discouraged and we were discouraged for him. This is why we chose to risk his dependance on a wheelchair. Why we chose to give him that freedom over waiting to see if he progresses with mobility on his own. We are already so happy with the choice! It has been amazing to see his response to his new wheels! While there certainly are many words to describe him now - broken, limited, immobile, disabled… alive is truly the only one that matters to us! Swim, treat, walk, ride, hungry, beach, lets go, sniff, camping and squirrel…. those are the words that matter to Finn! He lights up when he hears them and we are going to make sure he hears them loud, clear and in abunance! Finn is amazing, kind, alive, resilient, immobile, wise, old, happy, awesome and a little bit broken. Like all of us, he is a story made of so many wonderful and sad words that mean nothing and everything all at the same time! He is a good book with so many fun wheelchair chapters left to write! — #ilovemydog #rescuedogsrock #words #dogmomlife

Last week while hiking Arlo and I rounded a corner and came face to face with a black bear. Arlo thank god was leashed because the trail had a lot of brush and blowdown and I didn’t want him barreling through the woods and impaling himself with a branch (yes, I am paranoid). Instead of that awful scenario happening while I was hiking alone, I had my first wild bear encounter. What felt like hours must have only been about 30-35 seconds but it was terrifying to say the least. The bear was just as shocked to see us as we were to see it, but it still moved up and around us pretty slow. I screamed, waved my one arm in the air and tried to not to shit my pants. Arlo was confused at first but started barking once he saw it moving - I was impressed that he didn’t lunge and he eventually recalled to my leg through the chaos (thank you for that training gift @flashdogtraining ). Shaking, in tears and convinced it was my last living day on earth, I watched it disappear the direction we had just come from. We proceeded up the trail and stayed on the summit for way longer than I had anticipated giving it time to move on. We did not see it again on our way out but my heart was racing the entire hike. I have always wanted to see a bear in the wild and I got my wish and I am good now, forever! This past weekend we van camped and throughout the evening we heard a lot of deep grunts/growls in the woods and around us. I was convinced it was an elk but everyone else said it was bear noises. When we returned to service we did some youtube investigating and it was indeed bear. So, apparently they are out right now everyone! Anyone else have any bear encounters recently? Also, I have been getting a lot of messages about vans lately - if you are interested in learning more check out forum.projectvanlife.com from @project.vanlife - tons of topics and tips for anyone living the vanlife (part-time or full-time) or wanting to! — #vanlife #ilovemydog #dogmomlife #rescuedogsrock

About five months ago Finn took a leap that left him immobile in his hind legs - we continue to do everything possible to help him gain mobility back and we are still hopeful that he can make some progress toward that. With summer here, though, we wanted him to be able to participate in as many summer activities as possible! If you saw my stories you will see Finn is sporting a new custom-fit, backcountry wheelchair - he can hike, swim, walk, sniff at his leisure, run and play in this and it literally makes my heart burst watching him! Of course, in Finn fashion, he took to it right away and was immediately loving his new independence! Finn has proven time and time again that everything in life is temporary and you really just need to make the best of it no matter what comes your way! I want to say a huge thank you - as always - to @llbean #ad for always gearing me up and supporting our adventures - I am loving my new womens Katahdin Hiking Boots and my AirLight Pullover has been perfect for the cool mornings and brisk nights around a fire! Have you ever been so sad about leaving a place that you actually feel like you want to cry? That was me yesterday. This past weekend we were spoiled rotten with a stay @headlandslodge - HAVE YOU SEEN THIS PLACE? If you were following along with my stories you will know it is INCREDIBLE (I created a highlight on my profile as well in case you missed them)! I am all for sleeping in tents and vans and not showering for days but every once in a while it is nice to have a little luxury. Headlands Coastal Lodge & Spa was just that! Best thing though? It was DOG-FRIENDLY! Sitting oceanfront in Pacific City, right along side Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area, Headlands has something for everyone. If you want to HEAD OUT on an adventure the room comes with complementary Fat Tire bikes - you can cruise the beach or check out what Pacific City has to offer. In addition to biking, there are waves to surf, trails to hike, whales to watch and dunes to climb - all nearby - and if you need help planning what to do, Headlands has Adventure Coaches ready to help you plan your trip! If adventure isn’t your thing you can STAY IN and enjoy your room (I wont lie - I did a lot of this). Each room has a spa style bathroom with a shower and a cast iron soaking tub and views of Haystack Rock from your private balcony! The dogs were even welcomed with super comfortable dog beds, hand crafted water dishes and home-made treats! I could go on all day about how awesome this place is - I seriously cant wait to go back! As you can see from the pictures - I think Arlo and Finn agree! Check out the link in my bio to learn more! Finn has been spending a lot of time going to work with Paul - it gets him out of the house and changes up his scenery a bit! His wheelchair is still being made and we hope to get that next week so he has a bit more freedom. Arlo and I have spending a lot of time together working on his training, hiking, running and backpacking. Life is a bit all over the place with these two having such different needs but we are doing the best we can. My favorite part of the day, though, is when Paul and Finn get home at night and Arlo sees Finn! He gets so excited he runs circles around him, grabs him a toy, sniffs him all over and starts licking his face! They both wag their tails and I would like to think they silently tell each other about their days. After their routine reunion, they eat their @stellaandchewys #ad dinners together. Arlo always finishes his well before Finn and then, like the pest he is, he waits patiently (well, as patiently as Arlo can wait) for Finn to finish his so he can lick his bowl clean. Sometimes, when Arlo is really worn out, he will cuddle himself up next to Finn for a little bit in the evening but most nights he rips through the house squeaking his ball, tossing his toys and checking each window for squirrels while Finn gives us annoyed old man looks that scream, “Kids these days. Can’t I get a little peace and quiet? SMH.” If only I could remind him that he was once no different… Im not a huge fan of mundane routines, but I sure am grateful for these ones. — #stellaandchewys #ilovemydog #dogmomlife #vanlife

“What am I ever going to do without you?” A phrase you must have thought was your name after the countless times you had heard in your life. I never wanted to go a day having to figure out the answer to that question, but here I am, a year later, still struggling with it. You came into my life when you were about nine months old. You were in need of a home and someone to love you, and as it turned out, I was in need of the same thing. A long time ago we were young once together - me in my mid-20’s trying to find myself and you a silly, wise, kind, loyal companion even in your youth. I’m not sure what my life would look like had I not been blessed to find you, but I do know that I needed you far more than you ever needed me. We spent weeks, months and years growing up together. You were my partner in crime, my best friend and my home. Countless memories I return to time and time again as a way of holding on to you. As I knew would happen, time aged you a bit quicker and before I knew it, last year, on this day after 12.5 years together, Cancer won its battle and I had to say goodbye to you forever. There is a brick sitting in my chest thinking about that day, making it hard to breathe. You taught me more about myself, love and life than I could ever thank you for. You are missed so deeply. Tears fall in place of the words I lack to explain how broken my heart is. How broken it will always be. I hope you chase all the squirrels, roll in all the snow and eat all the strawberries today, Tonto. I’ll just be here, still lost, looking for you everywhere and trying to figure out what I am ever going to do without you. June 6th. An average day on a calendar for most people, but for me it will always be a day I remember having my very last moments with you - a day I will both celebrate and mourn you. I love you so very much sweet boy. I always will. — #ilovemydog #rainbowbridge #imissyou

🎶 Now slide to left, slide to the right, cha cha now ya’ll 🎶 … Want to know a few things that make my little lemur Arlo so happy that he wants to dance: toys, his girlfriend Winnie, treats, rolling around, chasing things and VACATION! We recently spent a long weekend vacation at a pet-friendly, oceanfront @Vacasa property in Yachats, Oregon. This particular day it had been raining and we lost all hope for a beautiful costal sunset. We had all settled in inside - some of us in the dining room playing games and others in the kitchen starting to get dinner ready when magically the sun peaked out right before setting for the night! Thankfully we had this beautiful deck with glass panels to grab a shot and capture a memory! If you would like to catch a sunset on this deck or give your dogs a dance worthy vacation, check out the link in my bio to see the property we stayed at or search the @Vacasa database of over 13,000 properties around 30 U.S. States and 16 countries! Feeling tired on this Monday? Just pull up a rock. Apparently they are really comfortable! Yesterday, with some reluctance, I convinced Arlo to wake up with me to watch the sunrise. I think this was his was of telling me he would have rather stayed in the tent!! He is becoming the best trail friend I could ever ask for and he continues to provide me with good life reminders each day. This weekend he reminded me that life is really pretty simple. Just because there is no comfy bed doesn’t mean you cant nap, just because your friend is better at catching toys than you are doesn’t mean you stop playing, being weird is a good time and even when you are tired and crabby and things don’t go as planned, shake it off, make the best of it and have fun anyway! Arlo and I danced among the 2000 year old stumps in the Neskowin Ghost Forest this past weekend and as you can see he has much better dance skills than I do. According to Wikipedia, while living, the trees that make up this Ghost Forest were similar to present-day coastal rain forest trees. They stood 150–200 feet high and were at least 200 years old when buried. It was originally believed that these trees died slowly, as the roots were gradually submerged in saltwater due to changes in the sea levels. Yet research by geologists revealed that the soil, still present at the roots of the stumps, was buried abruptly - indicating a more sudden and dramatic event, like an earthquake, as the cause. Pretty cool to see! This weekend we are trading coast fun for mountain fun and heading out for our first big backpacking trip of the season! The views, company and freeze dried meals will be magnficient and I am really looking forward to bitching about how much my pack weighs for miles and miles and miles! Who else could go for a van nap here? Arlo had a REALLY active Memorial Day weekend. He played and ran with his best friend Winnie as much as he could and now, just like me, I can tell he is exhausted from all the activity. We all hear that it is crucial that we exercise and stimulate our dogs, and it is, but it is also really important to focus on healthy rest and relaxation, too. Not only does this promote a balanced lifestyle but they feel much better when they have a good night’s sleep. Rest and relaxation provide many benefits for them. They are more energized and less anxious after a good sleep and just like for us, sleep ensures the body has sufficient time to heal, reset and function properly. For Arlo, aside from a good night’s sleep, we have been using his new training to incorporate more relaxation into his daily routines - his “place” command has been really beneficial in allowing him to mentally “check out” when he is in stimulating environments and often times now we even catching him in a light sleep in situations where he used to be worked up by everything going on around him. On average, dogs sleep between 12 and 16 hours a day so as the saying goes - let a sleeping dog lie - if they are tired it is their way of telling you it is what their body needs. After a long weekend with friends, I know my body is telling me the same thing! Healthy sleep tips brought to you by our friends at @FigoPet Insurance! NEVER LEAVE THE DOGS BEHIND! As a dog owner you hear this a lot and it is something I have really tried to stay true to the past few years. While I have certainly traveled without them, having them along just makes everything so much better! This is why I recently partnered with @Vacasa to check out their pet friendly vacation rental options here on the Oregon Coast! From start to finish - searching for the perfect rental for us all the way to locking up all the doors and putting the keys back in the lockboxes, Vacasa made it simple for us to bring our best friends along! You can search a database of over 13,000 properties around 30 U.S. States and 16 countries to find one that fits your needs! Our rental, in Yachats (link in bio), was perfect for us - while you can rent it as two separate units we were able to stay in the the whole house! We were traveling with friends so it was nice to have two kitchens and more space to move around. The property was oceanfront with two large decks and a balcony spanning the entire length of the home. The dogs loved sitting outside watching all the people running, biking and walking their dogs on the trail that hugged the coast below! A short half mile walk (along some of the most beautiful, rugged, flower-lined coast) from the house was a HUGE beach where the dogs played ball while we enjoyed watching some curious seals that would come extra close to shore trying to check us out! This photo was taken steps from our doors and I already miss it! Thank you @Vacasa - we made some wonderful memories this weekend! If you are looking for rental options that allow you to bring your best friend along - ABSOLUTELY check out Vacasa - you will not be disappointed! This little lemur has been on the edge of his seat waiting to find out what sort of fun he is going to have this weekend! He’s going to be so excited when he finds out we will be staying at a fantastic dog-friendly, oceanfront vacation rental with @Vacasa in Yachats (a charming beach town on the central Oregon coast)! We have a lot of fun things planned (breweries, sunsets, lighthouses, beaches, hikes, tide pools and plenty of overall tomfoolery) so follow along with us and check the link in my bio to learn more about the dog-friendly property we are staying at and search for others throughout 30 other US states and 16 countries! Happy Memorial Day weekend everyone - I would like to extend a HUGE thank you to all the men and women who sacrificed for my freedoms and those who continue to fight to protect them! Cheers to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness! I hope you all have a safe and wonderful holiday! Yachats - here we come! 🇺🇸 — #MyVacasa #ilovemydog #travelwithdogs #dogmomlife #roadtrip

We’re creeping up on a holiday weekend and for us that means a long weekend with friends on the coast! We have some really fun things planned and I cant wait to adventure, hike, beach comb, grill out, drink beer and play games! While I am excited to relax, I will admit I am a pretty paranoid person so whenever I have these sort of weekends planned I always sign on to my @figopet Pet Cloud app to search for the nearest vets and emergency vets in the area where we will be staying. We have had a lot of freak accidents in the past and having this information ahead of time gives me peace of mind in case we have no service. I find the information I need, screen shot it and have it saved for the duration of our trip. Better safe than sorry, right? The Pet Cloud also finds dog friendly restaurants, dog parks, pet stores and more based on my location - when traveling this really comes in handy! Thanks for having us covered, insurance and more, on all our adventures @figopet - What does everyone have planned this holiday weekend? Who else is paranoid like me and makes sure they have emergency information ready just in case? HAPPY ALMOST WEEKEND EVERYONE! — #figopet #figofamily #dogmomlife #rescuedogsrock #dogsthathike

You know what they say… always be yourself. Unless you can be a unicorn, then always be a unicorn! Arlo, you are deLIGHTful - seriously though - he is the most BRIGHT boy and he RADIATES joy! This year we needed to add a new lantern to our backpacking and camping gear and we went with the @llbean #ad Stowaway Lantern and Arlo is here to show off how fashionable (see my stories for more of the functionality)it can be! Aside from its amazing ability to act as a light up unicorn horn for your dog, at 2.5 inches collapsed and 5 inches open it packs super small and is the perfect size for all your backcountry adventures and it only weighs 5.5 ounces! The upper globe is removable allowing us to hang it or use as a flashlight and the base has built-in hooks on each of the collapsible legs for additional hanging options! If you’re looking for a lantern (or a unicorn horn for your dog) for backpacking adventures - be sure to check this one out - check out the link in my bio to shop! — #ilovemydog #lightofmylife #dogmomlife #howcute

You never truly know when something will be “the last time.” The last time you talk to someone. The last time you see someone. The last time you are in a place. Red Lake. May 20, 2018. I didn’t know it at the time, but this would be Tonto’s last backpacking trip. The last time we would hike into the backcountry and set up camp together. The last time he ate dinner with Finn under the stars. The last time he performed a perimeter check around our site before going to bed. The last time we would ever wake up in the middle of the woods and pack up camp together. I remember the smell of that morning and the sound of the frogs. I remember cuddling with him in the tent for as long as he would allow. I remember watching him hike out - the white tip of his tail high in the air as he inspected the trail with Finn. I remember him stopping every so often to check in with me. He would make eye contact and wag his tail before happily running ahead. I didn’t know that these tiny memories would stay etched in my head forever. Memories that time could never erase and I would treasure for the rest of my life. What I also didn’t know was that just two short weeks later I would hold his paws for the last time, I would bury my face full of tears into his neck for the last time and I would breathe him in for as long as I could for the very last time. The last time I would look into his kind eyes and tell him I love him. The final goodbye. The last time I truly felt whole. I often wonder how our 12.5 years together came and went so fast. I seemed to have blinked and he was gone. Life without him has been hard but I sure am lucky that he chose me to be the one who got to stand in his sunshine for a while. He made my life a much brighter place. — #ilovemydog #imissyou

Now this is what I call a happy hour! Who else wants to jump into this photo and hangout with these cool kids? They stole our seats, sure, but don’t they looking quite fetching? I’m pretty sure our friends at Cerveza Patagonia would like to hop on in there! One of the things I love about partnering with @cervezapatagonia.us is their love for dogs, adventure and the great outdoors. Let’s be serious though, aren’t all adventures best when shared with dogs. What I also love about #cervezapatagonia is their dedication to protecting our environment - it is their belief that while they source ingredients and inspiration from the world around us, it is important that they give something back! In partnership with the National Forest Foundation and American Forests, @cervezapatagonia.us will plant a tree for each case of beer sold! Cheers to Friday - I hope everyone gets a happy hour filled with dogs today! — #ad #ilovemydog #getoutside #drinkabeer #plantatree

Old friends are truly the BEST friends. We decided that we are going to get this guy a set of wheels. While he is still making progress and is able to move around a little bit on his own he is getting frustrated with not being able to participate. While there is some concern that this will make him dependent and discourage him from trying to move on his own, we feel that he deserves to be included more and at almost 14 years old - you just never know! So in a few weeks Mr. Finn will be sporting a wheel chair! These are custom built for each dog and we are going to go with a rugged, backcountry version so he can do all the adventuring possible! I cant wait to see this guy tearing it up on his own again - even if that means a little extra help from some wheels! — #ilovemydog #dogmomlife #pda #rescuedogsrock

We spent the weekend with friends at a beautiful dispersed lakefront site in Washington. JUST LOOK AT THAT PLACE!!! It took us some time to find but all the wrong turns and exploring paid off! Once we set up camp we paddle boarded, soaked up the sun and invented a really fun game called “rocks in a box.” Finn enjoyed swimming and lounging while Arlo practiced more on the board and spent the whole day swimming and running himself silly! When he was finally fully exhausted he decided he liked our friend’s @ariana.stimpson van better than ours and thought it was fine to make himself comfortable on their bed. He even stayed up there to nap with his Aunt Ari! After he learned he could easily get himself up there we had a hard time keeping him off. Sorry guys! I think we created a monster! Just look how cute they look, though! ❤️ — #vanlife #ilovemydog #roadtrip #washington #shotoniphone

“What is that you say? It is National Small Business week? That’s neat. How about you get your credit card out and buy some of these @stellaandchewys #ad Salmon & Cod meal mixers for little old me to show your support?” Who here has visited Portland? If you have, or if you live here, you will know this city is filled with local small businesses and we love supporting them. This week we stopped by @petsonbroadway to check out their selection of our favorite Stella & Chewy’s products! Of course we couldn’t leave without a few things that Arlo picked out. Not only do they carry our favorite things but they also have a frequent buyer program to help you save money, they host a variety of events that raise funds for local animal shelters and rescues, they host DIY workshops (build your own terrarium, grow your own herb garden, make a bird feeder, etc.), vet clinics to provide affordable basic vet care and adoption events! They always have something going on - so if you’re a local or if you’re in town visiting stop by and check them out! @tuftandneedle Linen Sheets - so cozy even a border collie will want to lay down and take a nap. Now THAT is saying something! I really enjoy the twelve seconds each morning that the bed is actually made. To be quite honest though, making the bed in the morning is a complete waste of my time. Not long after I do, Arlo decides to make flying leaps onto it with his toys - turning the up blankets and the sheets. He bombs back and fourth through the house and eventually the bedding is all in a pile in the back corner of the bed. Sometimes, when I don’t hear him being his darling pest self I go into a mild panic wondering what he is up to and I find him burrowed into the sheets on the bed. On occasion I have watched him nest and fluff the sheets with his front paws - when he finds them to be satisfactory he turns in circles before finally settling into his spot! While I am annoyed at the fact the bed is totally in shambles - I find it all very adorable! And as an added bonus our new sheets are dirt repellant and the dog hair shakes right off them! So nest away Arlo and chase all those squirrels in your dreams - that is far more important to me than having the bed made! Anyone else love watching their dogs nest? — #ad #wakeupbetter #ilovemydog #bordercollie

There are so many things that come from the earth that dogs enjoy. Mostly everything, really. Sticks to fetch. Trails to hike on. Dirt and sand to dig in. Bushes to sniff. Pinecones to investigate. Water to swim in. Beaches to run on. Grass to roll in. The list goes on and on! This #earthday why not take your best friend outside and do something together to celebrate the earth and reduce their carbon paw print! Pick up garbage along a road, dog park, trail or beach, plant a tree (for future sticks), walk to a farmers market or local store to buy some treats, do a little spring cleaning and donate old toys, leashes or gear to your local animal shelter, and use biodegradable poop bags (this should happen every day), and finally the best kind of recycling there ever could be - consider adopting a pet - there are plenty, like Arlo was, just waiting for forever homes! — earth day dog tips sponsored by our good friends @figopet Pet Insurance #figopet #figofamily #dogmomlife #rescuedogsrock #dogsthathike

You know what I need to have a good time? Dogs. Nature. Friends. Dogs. Beer. Dogs. Hammocks. You know what hammocks need to hang? Trees! You know what @cervezapatagonia.us does when you buy a twelve pack of their beer? They plant a tree! At Cerveza Patagonia they believe that an adventure isn’t something you go on - it’s a way of life. A journey, not a destination. Moments spent together, in tune with nature and immersed in its beauty. That’s how it is in their home in the mountains of South America and they want to share that feeling with us - all while continuing to protect the environment around us! #CervezaPatagonia is launching its beer in the Pacific Northwest and Southeast and I highly suggest you get your hands on some - brewed with cascade hops native to their homeland in Patagonia but brewed fresh here in the U.S. to reduce their carbon footprint! So grab a case, they’ll plant a tree and we’ll all be able to hang hammocks for years to come! :) — #ad #ilovemydog #getoutside #drinkabeer #plantatree #hangingout #whpplanetearth

A Labrador, German Shepherd and Border Collie are walking down the street and they spot an adorable female Australian Shepherd. They all head her direction and try to win her attention. The Australian Shepherd decides to make a game of it, and tells them "I will play with whichever one of you can best use the words 'liver' and 'cheese' in a sentence." The Labrador quickly says "I love liver and cheese," to which she disapprovingly shakes her head. The German Shepherd thinks and follows up with "I HATE liver and cheese," which also gets a disapproving nod from her. The Border Collie winks at her, then turns to the Labrador and German Shepherd and proudly says "Liver alone, cheese mine." The Border Collie wins and shares his @stellaandchewys #ad lamb liver treats with her and they play happily ever after! — #ilovemydog #dogsarelife #vanlife #rescuedogsrock #badjokes

I’m not sure if you guys can tell from photos or not but Arlo has a HUGE head. When we went to pick him up at the shelter I remember one of the first things I said was “wow, his head is so big.” I would joke and tell him he needed a head that big for space to fit his big brain. True to the Border Collie breed, Arlo does have a big brain. It amazes me sometimes how smart he is and most of the time he is always one step ahead of me - doing what I was going to ask him to do before I can even ask it. His big head comes into play with a lot of other things too, though. For instance, he is clumsy and he hits it on everything. Walls, doors, tables, other dogs, you name it. I believe he was given a little bit extra skull for protection up there! He also loves to burry his big head into me and I find it to be one of the most adorable things in the entire world. This morning he climbed right on top of me in bed and buried his head under my chin, his nose tucked right along my chest - he sat there for a few minutes just letting me pet him. And then there are moments like this - when I ask him for a hug and he presses his head right against mine and stays there. I read that in human body language, touching forehead to forehead is a way to communicate love and affection - a gesture of very endearing closeness. While I know he isn’t a human, I think he totally understands this. Since he can’t express himself verbally I think this is his way of connecting with me and telling me he loves me. Or at least that is what I tell myself! What do you think? — #ilovemydog #dogsarelife #herpnwlife #rescuedogsrock #whpplanetearth

Our van interior is tiny and hard to keep clean - especially when we have two dogs that love to go on the bed. We all know that light colors make spaces feel larger, but light colors also show more dirt so I have been searching high and low to find soft but durable, easy to clean, light colored sheets that will hold up year round for our bed. I finally came across @tuftandneedle #ad Linen Sheets - and after feeling them I knew they would be perfect - so I asked if I could put them to the test! Stronger than cotton and dirt-repellant (like I said, we see a LOT of dirt) these have been PERFECT for what we need (they also have a natural, lived-in look - and while you can easily steam or light iron the wrinkles out I personally love the rumpled look). It turns out, there are also a lot of other benefits to choosing linen. Linen wears well and becomes softer and stronger with each use - which means they will hold up over time. Linen is moth-resistant (a bonus as we have a lot of them flying in in the summer months) and it also has natural antibacterial and non-allergic properties. In addition, linen is more sustainable and environmentally friendly - linen comes from the flax plant and the cultivation and manufacturing of flax requires less irrigation, pesticides and energy than most other fibers, including cotton. My point? If you’re looking for awesome sheets - GET THESE! As you can see, Arlo approves. ❤️ — #wakeupbetter #vanlife #campingwithdogs #ilovemydog

We spent this past weekend with eight friends and five dogs at a dog loving rental with Bennington Properties @sunriver_or_vacations - for the dogs, our rental came stocked with @ruffwear gear for us to use during our stay, all the dogs received their own welcome gift and what truly warmed my heart was the way they went out of their way to provide a pull behind dog cart for Finn so he could join in all the fun, too. Once we arrived on Friday night, there was absolutely no reason to need to leave. There were miles of dog friendly walking and bike trails right outside the house and it was only a five minute walk to the Village at Sunriver where there is multiple shops, a grocery store, dining options and a brewery @sunriverbrewing - We spent a lot of timing hanging around at the house playing cards and ping pong, watching the dogs have the time of their lives and lounging in the hot tub, where the dogs liked to play “drop the ball into the tub and see which human will throw it.” When we weren’t hanging out at the house we were bombing around the bike trails with Finn or enjoying a beer at the brewery. I have had so many people asking for dog friendly accommodation recommendations around Oregon and I couldn’t recommend @sunriver_or_vacations more! Over 65% of their properties are dog loving and the surrounding area is an outdoor lovers dream! My advice would be to go in the off-season, like we did, to avoid the crowds and take advantage of everything Sunriver has to offer with a bit more peace and quiet! If you are interested in checking them out for yourself head to the link in my bio to book online. For an off-season discount code for 20% off two or more nights use PAWSANDPINTS - this code is good for stay until 5/22/19 and 9/3 - 11/13/19 - in addition, you will also receive a complimentary @sunriverbrewing growler with one free fill! Adventures are always better when you bring your friends along, am I right?! Tomorrow we are heading to Sunriver to spend the weekend adventuring with our friends @eyespy_zak and @life.with.winnie at an amazing dog friendly cabin with @sunriver_or_vacations and we couldn’t be more excited! If you’re interested in dog friendly accommodations in beautiful central Oregon, follow along with all of us on our stories this weekend! We will be hiking, biking, grilling, eating, drinking, hot-tubbing and letting the dogs have the time of their lives! Also - Arlo is in need of a new collar. He still uses the collar he came home with from the shelter and it is getting a bit ratty. Anyone have any suggestions for brands they love? He loves to roll around in almost everything so one that is easily washable one would be ideal! — #ilovemydog #dogmomlife #lemur #rescuedogsrock

It has been raining in Portland for what seems like fifteen years now. This morning Arlo decided that it would be a tremendous amount of fun to run around outside in the mud and then come in and jump all over the couch and the bed. Wet, dirty and full of himself, he tore circles around me and Finn like a tornado tucking his butt, making growling noises and bombing back and forth through the house tossing his ball in the air while leaving a messy trail of mud with every step. Thanks buddy. I’m really looking forward to cleaning that up. It is safe to say we are all getting a bit stir crazy for good weather. Finn’s healing progress continues to be slow but we are hopeful that at some point we can get him on his legs again and strong enough to even take some small backpacking trips this summer. I sure am missing evenings like this with him. Please note the water in this picture appears way closer than it was - this is a designated campsite on a granite cliff high above and far from the water. With backpacking season approaching I want to highlight this and remind everyone heading out help reduce human impact and camp on durable surfaces such as rock, dry grass or established sites and always be 200 feet from the water! Arlo’s face when he gets home from training and he realizes he has a lot more training ! Sorry buddy but it ain’t over - it’s really just beginning! Let me just start by saying though - this guy is SO HAPPY TO BE HOME! Last night he played with his toys for hours - he bounced around the house squeaking his balls, tossed and shook his stuffed toys around as hard as he could and barreled around the backyard with his jolly ball for as long as I would let him. He then cuddled up on the bed with us to sleep and woke up bright and early to go straight to his toys and start playing again. One of the things I was worried about when I sent Arlo to @flashdogtraining for three weeks to get trained was that he would change. That he wouldn’t want to cuddle anymore or he would have a different personality. I am so happy to report that he is the same pesky, playful and life-of-the-party Arlo! There are plenty of differences though. TERRIFIC ones. Healthy ones. NEEDED ones. He isn’t constantly pacing the house or chasing his tail obsessively. He is focused and makes direct eye contact waiting for our cues. He is able to “turn off” on his place bed to work on impulse control. I can already feel us communicating with each other far more effectively and our trust in each other grows a little deeper each time we lock eyes. We still have a long way to go and continuing to implement his training and learn from each other will be our priority for a very long time. Kerry gave Arlo a foundation that sets him up for a lifetime of freedom and safety and she gave us the tools and the knowledge to make sure it always stays that way. Thank you for helping us grow Kerry - I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - YOU ARE A GIFT! — #ilovemydog #rescuedogsrock #dogmomlife #stinkeye #vanlife

This weekend Arlo graduates from his training program with @flashdogtraining - if you have been following along you will understand why I am a proud Mom right now! He has absolutely thrived during his time there and I couldn’t be more excited to watch our relationship grow as a result! What I am most excited about is that he can finally be a dog! He can play freely with other dogs. He can run on the beach. He can be unleashed hiking. He can do all of this now and he can do it SAFELY! There will be plenty of sappy proud posts to come (sorry in advance) but for now I am just so excited to get this little lemur back! His happiness and overall playful personality is infectious and I have been missing it terribly - he is always down for a good time and it is virtually impossible not to smile just watching him be himself, no matter how big of a pest he is being. Kerry described him perfectly - “Arlo is seriously a millennial frat boy!” And it cracks me up because it is so true! The life of the party 100%! Anyone else have a millennial frat boy in their pack? I sure cannot wait to have mine back!! Thank you for giving us this clean slate @flashdogtraining - we are so grateful to have it! Life is just getting started for you Arlo and I CANNOT WAIT TO SHARE IT WITH YOU! — #ilovemydog #dogmomlife #rescuedogsrock #popyacolor #whpfavoritecolor

What is your texting technique? What finger(s) do you use? I text with ONLY my right pointer finger. Sometimes people watch me texting and they tell me it is so strange. I am told that most people text with both of their thumbs (holding the phone quite like I am holding Finn’s head). Apparently we humans can get Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) from texting too much. Yes this is a real thing and I am concerned for my pointer finger since it is doing all the work. So I am very interested in how you do it? For example this weekend I learned that - Paul @thepaulofthewild texts with both his thumbs and Kerry @flashdogtraining texts with her left thumb and right pointer finger. Please tell me I am not the only one that just uses my right pointer! Also, how adorable is Finn? My heart swells just looking at him! — #ilovemydog #rescuedogsrock #dogmomlife
