Sunset over #Kyoto. The Fushimi Inari shrine might be most famous for its thousand of red torii gates. But it also features a wonderful sunset view over the city of Kyoto. Well, after you climbed a couple of hundred steps 😉 but it’s well worth the effort! Come in the late afternoon to start the ascend and you’ll make it just in time to enjoy the sunset. Don’t forget to bring something to drink, otherwise you’ll have to raid the overpriced vending machines along the way. More of my tips for #Japan are now live on www.thetravelblog.at!

Prayers at #Sensoji in Tokyo. This temple is on everyone‘s bucket list when visiting #Tokyo. Although it can get quite crowded and busy, it still has a special atmosphere. But when you stroll around the neighborhood from here you’ll find many small temples that are completely empty and surrounded by local cemeteries or serene gardens. They might not be as famous and iconic, but feel more peaceful and quiet. Surprisingly we found many areas of Tokyo to be quite walkable! You can read all about our 10 day Japan itinerary on www.thetravelblog.at.

Are you dreaming of #Japan? • I just released a huge blogpost with a full 10 day Japan itinerary for first time visitors. Including some of the best views you’ll get in #Tokyo, tips for the ancient city of #Kyoto and a venture off the beaten track to the Seto art islands with all their incredible museums and installations! • Before traveling to Japan I wasn’t sure how well I would handle a country with so many people, so densely populated - but got surprised by how peaceful and calm it feels. Even in cities like Tokyo with over 37 million people living in the greater metropolitan area. You could stand on a rooftop and listen to the wind - not one siren or honking interrupting the quiet. • Advertisement: Trip powered by @allnipponairways_official. #wearejapan #flyANA #ANA #AllNipponAirways • Anzeige

The cutest tiny animals must be Meerkats, right? 😍 • In the Makgadikgadi National Park there are a couple of wild meerkat colonies. This particular colony has been accustomed to humans by a local who visits them on a daily basis. Therefore they are used to visitors, although it’s still a wild colony! You can even get out of the car without scaring them away. We spent hours there watching them dig for food - while constantly being on the lookout for predators. • This is was such a fun and unique wildlife encounter! A night under the Milky Way in #Botswana - powered by @evaneos_travel. (Advertisement | Invitation) • Sleeping under this incredible open sky was one of my most memorable experiences in Botswana. And just in case you’re wondering - that little tent was the bush toilet 🤷🏻‍♀️☺️. • I wrote a blogpost with everything you might want to know about this experience, answering all those questions from “What about wild animals?” or “How cold does it get at night?”. • If you are into experiences like this I recommend Evaneos, which is a platform that connects individual travellers to local travel experts. They have over 1.300 local experts in more than 160 destinations. So recently they added Botswana to their portfolio and we got to test their service there. We wouldn’t have found out about this experience without them and they organized it all perfectly! #Evaneos • Anzeige/Werbung

1 or 2? 🦒Can’t decide which photo of that baby giraffe I find cuter 😍 Shot with the new Nikon Z 6 powered by @nikonaustria (Advertisement).
•
For this trip to Zambia and Botswana I focused on shooting with the AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm 1:5.6E ED VR lens. This lens is one of the best tele lenses I ever laid eyes on and I was really interested to see how it would work together with the FTZ adapter on my mirrorless camera.
•
This lens was originally built for Nikon DSLR cameras, but with the adapter you can also use it on the mirrorless models of Nikon. Having had some disappointing experiences with using adapters on other cameras before I was sceptical about the outcome - but Nikon did an amazing job with their native lenses and the adapter. There is absolutely no tangible difference, neither in handling or image quality. Especially the autofocus is often a problem when using adapters, but as you can see it even worked perfectly under challenging situations (that baby giraffe started running away just a mere second after being surprised by our vehicle). •

My favorite wildlife photo from #Botswana - shot with the new Nikon Z 6 powered by @nikonaustria (Advertisement). • On a safari you never know when magic happens. That evening we were watching a herd of buffalos in the sunset after searching for "cats" without any luck. But all of a sudden the buffalos started running in panic and a cloud of dust appeared from their hoofs in the sand. • It's only through the viewfinder of my camera that I first spotted a lion’s tail. Turns out there were 3 lions starting their evening hunt right at that moment. The sun had already set and the light was almost gone, we were racing along with the running buffalo herd in our 4x4 vehicle. Let’s just say it was a challenge to shoot this. • But then the way the lions hunt is incredible. They are slow hunters, sometimes chasing their prey for days. They will chase them for a few seconds and then lie down the next moment and wait. The buffalos run away and then stand around waiting. But sometimes one of the brave buffalos turns around and makes an attempt at chasing the lions away. This moment will be engraved into my soul forever. We were like silent witnesses of something so powerful & majestic. • Make sure to check the link in my bio (www.thetravelblog.at) to read all about wildlife photography with the new Z 6 and see more photos from the trip to Zambia & Botswana! #nikonaustria #z6 #pursuitoflight • Anzeige/Werbung

Wildlife photography with the new Nikon Z 6 powered by @nikonaustria (Advertisement). • Shooting animals is one of the most challenging photography tasks. You cannot direct or change light, setting, movement and there’s often just milliseconds to react. Having the right kind of gear is crucial in these moments. When the animal finally stands still for a second or moves to that one spot with the perfect light or background. • This was my first safari that I shot on the new Nikon Z 6 and I wrote a full blogpost about my setup and also which settings I used when capturing wildlife. Settings for these photos: Photo 1: 480mm, f/5.6, 1/1000 sec, ISO 100. Photo 2: 200mm, f/5.6, 1/1000 sec, ISO 500. A road trip to the alps - powered by @bmwaustria. (Advertisement) • Last week we spent a couple of days in a picturesque valley in Austria’s Salzburger land - on a mission to shoot the new BMW 330i limousine. • As with any alpine photo shoot it was a given to drive up to into the mountains one morning for sunrise 😉 And the Großglockner high alpine road is definitely one of the most scenic places to choose when it comes to alpine roads in Austria. During the day it can get quite busy up here, but if you go early in the morning (they open at 5am) you’ll likely be all by yourself! • Soon more of my photos will be published over at @bmwaustria, so stay tuned! #bmwaustria • Anzeige

Escaping the city for a few days at @naturhotelforsthofgut. (Advertisement | Invitation). Leogang is one of those places with a special energy. There are many valleys in Austria that feel dark and narrow to me, but here in Leogang the valley feels wide and open - as it stretches amply from West to East. I always prefer valleys like these... where there’s enough sunlight - and the mountains only cover the North and southern side. Nine years ago we already stayed at this family-owned hotel and to be back now and see how much has changed is incredible. It’s clear that the next generation has taken over the hotel - transforming it with new visions, while still keeping the alpine traditions up. For me that makes a hotel uniquely interesting - I love the mix of old and new and when a place has a history. #forsthofgut #ilovefhg #waldspa

Happy #Hippo! Did you know that hippos are amongst the most dangerous animals in Africa? 🦛 😱They are able to topple smaller boats easily - well and swimming is obviously also a suicide mission 😉. This was actually our view while we stayed in the @tuskandmanesafaris camp right next to the Zambezi river with countless hippos right in front of our doorstep! Therefore one of the pre-requisites was to never walk to our tents alone at night. Hippo encounters were bound to happen! At night their chatter was keeping us entertained and sometimes we could hear them walking past our tent on their nightly search for food. They walk for miles every night to feed before then returning back to the water to keep cool during the day. Let me give you 9 reasons why #Zambia should be on your bucket list! • Reason 1: It’s completely off-the-beaten-path with very low tourist numbers. • Reason 2: 30% of Zambia are actually dedicated to wildlife in either National parks or game reserves, which leaves enough space for an abundance of wild animals! • Reason 3: The leopards! We saw so many leopards in Zambia, no wonder they call a part of it the “Valley of the leopard”. • Find our all the reasons on www.thetravelblog.at now! #explorezambia • Advertisement/ The trip was powered by @pintoafrica.

Sundowner at @tuskandmanesafaris (Advertisement | Press Trip). • Although it might not sound so special, seeing an elephant in the wild is always a magical encounter. Before my first safari I didn’t think as much about what a miracle it is that these giants are still roaming our planet. • Maybe it’s because I had seen too many documentaries already or had a fair share of elephant encounters in zoos as a child, but I didn’t grasp the wonder of it all. • It’s not until I had my first encounter with a wild elephant and truly felt it’s presence in a direct way that I understood on a deeper level the gratitude we as humans should have for being able to share our dear planet earth with such graceful and humble beings. • At @tuskandmanesafaris we had the chance to see countless elephants in a part of #Zambia that is still very remote and undeveloped. Here at the Lower Zambezi National Park you’ll be able to connect to nature in a really meaningful way - gaining an understanding of how interconnected everything is while being in touch with wildlife that has roamed these plains long before the first visitors arrived. • Thanks for the invitation to @pintoafrica and @tuskandmanesafaris! #pintoafrica #explorezambia #tuskandmanesafaris

Sleeping under the stars in #Zambia. Star beds are our new best friends! When we heard that we could sleep outside alone in the bush we were a bit scared at first. I mean we saw all the wildlife during the day... how would it feel to hear them rumbling around us at night in the pitch dark? But then we decided to give it a try and absolutely loved it. Therefore we even spent two nights in two different star beds at the two @shentonsafaris camps. Both beds are placed on an elevated platform and covered by a mosquito net - making them inaccessible for the large and small predators 😉. And then there was a guard sleeping out there close by with us - so we were protected at all times. The first night we heard the lions roar from really close by and therefore stayed awake for a while... alert and kind of intrigued by what would happen next. But then it got all silent and we slept like babies. The second night we spent close to the river and only heard a couple of hippos fart in the distance. If you ever go on a safari I would highly recommend to spend at least one night outside in the bush. Early morning in #Zambia. Every day we get up before sunrise, drink a cup of tea and then head out on our first game drive. On a safari our rhythm adapts to nature. We go to sleep early and wake up early, just like most animals do. Although many of them don’t get a decent night’s sleep like us. In fact some of their main predators are nocturnal, which means they will hunt at night. This is also the reason that animals like antelopes (pictured here is a male Kudu) have to be alert even when they sleep. That’s why they sleep without laying down, so they can always run away fast when needed. Advertisement • Trip powered by @pintoafrica. • Location: @shentonsafaris. • Shot on Nikon Z 6. When the sun sets in #Kyoto. There’s something magical about the temples in Japan, especially when the sun has set and the crowds disappear. The golden pavilion of „Kinkaku-Ji“ in #Kyoto. Since I first saw a photo of the gold leaf covered Zen temple years ago I knew I wanted to see it in person one day. When that day came I was honestly a bit disappointed. Not by the looks of the temple - it’s still stunning. But it somehow lacked the ambiance many of the other temples in Kyoto had. And then I read about the history. This building used to be a private home of a wealthy statesman. It was subsequently turned into a temple and covered in gold. The gold was intended to mitigate and purify any negative thoughts and feelings towards death. Yet in the 1950s a monk burnt the temple down and tried to commit suicide. It seems the gold wasn’t doing it’s job. Today this is a replica of the original building. While other temples might look less attractive - I felt like they carried more intention, meaning and atmosphere. So this is a perfect example of how Instagram can shape our travel experiences. While something might look incredible it can feel less so. Therefore I’m happy I also visited less photogenic places or even temples where photography wasn’t allowed at all, but had the chance to truly feel something. #kinkakuji #japan

Welcome to Japan‘s art islands! With @allnipponairways_official (Advertisement). • When we planned our Japan trip we initially thought we would do the classics, Tokyo and Kyoto - as it’s our first time over here. • But then ANA suggested the art islands around #Naoshima and #Teshima and I remembered why I put this on my bucket list a while ago. • The so called Seto islands faced a huge problem a while ago - young people were leaving for the large cities and the islands were slowly depopulated. There was no real perspective, economically and socially. • Along came two men with a vision. The founder of Benesse (a major education company) and the mayor of Naoshima. In the late 1980s they decide to transform the islands into art spaces and what happened in the following decades is probably unprecedented. • Tadao Ando was commissioned to build a museum and that was only the start of a long lasting relationship - now you can find his imprint all over the islands. • But also @yayoikusama_ left her mark with two pumpkins, which might be the most photographed pumpkins in the world. • Today the Setouchi Triennale happens three times a year, each island has dozens of museums, open houses, public art installations - and they draw visitors in by the thousands. And so people started moving (back) to the islands, setting up guesthouses, restaurants, hip coffee shops, bike rentals, and so on. • I highly recommend to visit the art islands of Japan - for us it was the perfect start into our discovery of a country full of culture and so much dedication. • #wearejapan #flyANA #ANA #AllNipponAirways • Anzeige

Galápagos Island wildlife. A story for @wwf_austria and #fishforwardeu. (Advertisement)
Did you know that your daily choice of food can affect wild animals like penguins, iguanas and turtles at the other end of the world? I think we have been detached from our food way too much and forgot to draw the connections from our plate to nature and it's sentient beings. There are many reasons to choose a vegetarian or vegan diet, but if you are not ready for that step you can also take some steps towards a more sustainable consumption - especially of meat & fish. The first step is to reduce your intake of animal products. Treat it as a delicacy, because it truly is. It takes a lot of effort and energy to produce animal based meals - much more than plant based food. And then choose your products responsibly, with an eye on how they were produced and how much suffering they caused. You can read a lot more about sustainable fish & seafood consumption in my highlight story #fishforward and over at @wwf_austria! #wwf Anzeige / Werbung

Beach moments from #Ecuador. A story for @wwf_austria and #fishforwardeu. (Advertisement)
While I enjoyed the last rays of sun hitting the Pacific Ocean a fight is happening not far from here. The fishermen fight to provide their families with food and income. They have to go further and further away from the coast to be able to catch something. And very often they don't catch what they have been searching for, but create a lot of so called “by-catch”. This is the involuntary trapping of other marine animals - like dolphins, sea turtles, sharks and many baby fish. Many of them die in the process. Some are even sold illegally on the black market. If we buy fish & seafood from sustainable and responsible sources we not only avoid by-catch, but also support over 800 million people worldwide living from fish in some way. #wwf Anzeige / Werbung

On the way to the fish market in Puerto Lopéz. A story for @wwf_austria and #fishforwardeu. (Advertisement)
At this local fish market we made an unfortunate encounter. The swordfish wasn’t the only fish delivered here, but also some illegally killed hammerhead sharks. Fishing and selling sharks is strictly forbidden, but the fishermen at this local market either didn’t know (which is unrealistic) or simply couldn’t afford to not sell them. Their financial situation is the key ingredient to protecting the wildlife and endangered animals. So buying sustainably produced fish doesn’t only support our oceans (and your personal health!), but also the fishermen’s lives. Their income can also rise when products are sold a little more expensively. And I’m sure we can afford a few cents here and there to make responsible choices when buying groceries. Make sure to also check the fish guide by @wwf_austria - a great source of information about sustainable fish and seafood. #wwf Anzeige / Werbung

Bird couples from the Galápagos Islands. A story for @wwf_austria and #fishforwardeu. (Advertisement) These birds are the visible part of the abundant wildlife at the Galápagos Islands in #Ecuador. The invisible part lies beneath the ocean's surface. The Galápagos Islands are protected by a natural protection zone. Here fishing isn't allowed for any industrial ships - only artisanal techniques are legal. And as soon as you dip your head in the ocean you'll notice the effects. Here you can spot sharks, rays and sea turtles everywhere. Something that is not possible in many parts of our oceans anymore. With our conscious fish & seafood consumption we can participate in the protection of our oceans and everything that is connected to it's prosperity. #wwf Anzeige / Werbung

Beaches, the gateway to the ocean. A story for @wwf_austria and #fishforwardeu. (Advertisement) Our oceans are slowly loosing their abundance of life. #Overfishing is invisible to most of us. Only the fishermen know to tell the stories of the loss of the oceans. While plastic pollution is a very visible problem, it’s not the biggest issue our oceans are facing. Plastic pollution kills 1 million marine animals every year. But fishing kills over 1 trillion marine animals in the same period. (Yes, that's 6 zeros more!). And that's not only fish & seafood, but also dolphins, sea turtles, sharks and baby fish. Animals we don’t even eat, but maybe simply throw away. Together with @wwf_austria the EU wants to raise awareness for sustainable fish & seafood consumption. As consumers we can choose to eat less or no fish and if we do we should source it sustainably. In my Story Highlight #fishforward you can find tips on how to check what kind of fish & seafood is sustainable and how to shop responsibly. #wwf • Anzeige / Werbung

Hola #Ecuador! Assigned by @wwf_austria. (Advertisement). If you’ve been following my stories lately you already know that I’ve been traveling the wonderful coastal areas of Ecuador for the last two weeks. @wwf_austria has assigned me to cover their project #fishforwardeu. This EU funded project is all about promoting sustainable fish consumption and it’s impact on the environment & the people. As a vegetarian myself it’s been quite a challenge to learn, see (and smell!) how fish is produced here in Ecuador. No matter if it’s small scale fisheries or industrial sized production - all come with their specific challenges and issues. In the next few days I’ll show you some results of my work here! You can also check my story highlight #fishforward to get more infos on sustainable fish and seafood choices. #wwf • Anzeige / Werbung

A final series from #Morocco. Before I start posting my photos from my time here in Ecuador I wanted to share a last couple of shots from the moody day in the Moroccan desert. We were prepared for rain that day, but before it hit us we got to enjoy the colors of the stone desert glooming in the last rays of sunshine until the pitch black clouds started to roll in. Unfortunately we were evacuated a little later, I would’ve loved to stay in the desert camp and witness the rain there - but sometimes safety comes first 🤷🏻‍♀️☺️

Quiet corners of #Marrakech. While I’m at the other end of the world right now, here’s a moment from last week‘s trip to Morocco. Time is passing by too fast right now, my memories need to catch up. I feel like I still need to mentally arrive at the Galápagos Islands (see what I’ve been up to in my stories). Do you know that feeling, when you physically arrived somewhere, but your mind and soul need a bit longer to join?

In case you’re wondering about #femaletravelbloggers... I‘m still working on the project behind the scenes. Since the encounter with @mihaela_noroc two days ago on the @chloe trip I‘ve found myself more motivated to keep pushing for a wider array of female travel portraits on Instagram. She said her motivation was the google image search for „beautiful woman“. The results were so uniformed and she didn’t feel represented, nor did she feel it showed the wild diversity of what we perceive as beauty. Her project @the.atlas.of.beauty is the result of her desire for more diversity. Check it out and give her a follow if you haven’t already, I find her stories to feel so true and honest and raw, quite inspirational! Thank you for taking my photos to the lovely @ninawro ♥️ (Unpaid Advertisement)

Souks of #Marrakech with @chloe (Advertisement). • Immersing ourselves in scents has been a key part of our journey. The souks can smell intense, but then you turn around the corner to find someone making freshly baked honey sweets or selling mandarins and there’s a new scent to soak up. • #chloenomade #chloegirls • Anzeige / Werbung
