With the creative team behind #IndustryHBO... Never thought I’d be in Wales helping 2 hetero men make a show. But I also thought I’d be a prima ballerina who kept pigs when I grew up...so every day is a winding road.
Pops- you’ve been my number #1 since day one! And you put all the other boys to shame. This is you by my hospital bed....You’ve spent approximately two months of your life keeping me safe, entertained and connected...when I’ve been at my most vulnerable. And you make it seem easy. I could paint you with my eyes closed...but I’m keeping them open so I can look out for anyone or anything that would ever fuck with my top dude! Happy Father’s Day! And #happyfathersday to all the other legendary daddy-os out there! 🌟💗🎉
AHHHH! I'm so excited to announce I’m directing & executive producing a new series with @hbo called INDUSTRY. It’s all about the cutthroat world of international finance. Think Wolf of Wall Street meets Melrose Place! I've moved across the pond for the summer to shoot this - specifically Wales UK - which is a dreamy place with fairytale gardens, super sweet humans, and dragon mythology. So taking reccs on secret spots, cuisine, you name it! Stay tuned for more! ✨🏴 #IndustryHBO Link in bio for the details!
I’m not in love with Jemima, you are !!! @jemima_jo_kirke
I mean, hands up if you’ve been the lady above once or twice in life? Here are some outtakes of faux paparazzi shots we made for my new podcast #TheCWord. Alissa Bennett and I clearly had a blast bringing out our full cray-cray-shashay-away selves. Ep.4 went live today - talking living legend and iconic diva #MariahCarey during her “Glitter era”. Don’t miss this one folks. Link in my bio. ✨✨✨✨✨✨ @hearluminary
Taking a moment to recognize all my truest homies who are dealing with chronic illness and in pain. I see you, I hear you, and I’m rooting for you every day. Even if all you can do is sip coffee, you are a rollicking success. May is #EDSAwarenessMonth, so if you have Ehlers-Danlos syndromes and hypermobility spectrum disorders, I encourage you to join The EDS Global Registry to support the research of this uncommon and unknown life-threatening illness, educate health professionals, and create EDS experts globally so that our pain is understood and honored. Link in my bio. #EhlersDanlos #EDS
Happy Memorial weekend friends. Yes, it’s still technically spring but summer is peeping around the corner like an overly curious neighbor. This is my newest painting of my muse @kaykasparhauser, wearing a sassy hat. I’m on a rollllllll…..who do you want me to paint like a french girl next? 🎨
It takes mad skills to have a hangover without drinking 🍸 🛌
A few years ago, I was chatting with @oliviawilde at an event where she was both pregnant and wearing a sparkly dress (and making both look easy.) She said she was thinking of directing a movie but was a little fearful. I said what I always say to women who want to make movies... “Just go for it!” (After all, dudes do things without knowing whether they’re actually capable of them all the time. See: the government). It turns out she had nothing to fear and NO reason to ask me for advice-- @booksmart is a miracle. Not only is it the funniest movie I’ve seen in years, it’s also the most inventive. Olivia directed the shit out of the warm and quietly revolutionary story, and the result is some of the most stylish and thoughtful work I’ve had the pleasure of seeing in a long time. Run, don’t walk-- this is one you’re going to want to see in theaters, with the Molly to your Amy... ❤️ 👭 #BooksmartMovie
Wait so that’s actually me. Onscreen. With my treasured scene partner/nugget @margaretqualley and some random dude. I think. I’m told. I wouldn’t know cuz I blacked out watching the @onceinhollywood trailer ahahgdhswhsgfafwff... Link in bio, and forever in my emotional bio! #OnceUponATimeInHollywood
It’s Saturday and Ingrid looks super thrilled. Why? Because there’s an all new episode of #TheCWord out @hearluminary. Deets up in stories. Trust us, you don’t want to miss this one. (Also...who can deal with that face? She looks like an angry Airbnb owner coming home to her trashed hot tub. 😂)
Board meeting in session
Instead of dismissing the women that society have called crazy, Alissa and I are dissecting the narratives that once chronicled their downfalls. New episodes are unveiled every Saturday on @hearluminary. There are even special guest appearances by my faves @siamusic and @margaret_cho! #TheCWord #WeWillNeverCallYouCrazy
I may own a birthday bitch hat, but IRL I’m no big birthday bitch. For someone who loves both attention and presents, I’ve sure cancelled a lotta bday parties at the last minute (a special sorry to @mattpolf who had already hired a crafting teacher last year, and @lesleyarfin who was ready to DJ in 2011.) I used to think there was something a bit unseemly about an adult leaning into their birthday, until I realized I was actually just jealous of the confidence and self-love it takes to say “it’s my day, people!” I often felt I was making up for some original sin and that the nicest thing I could do for others on my birthday was make myself as unobtrusive as possible (it never worked and I usually either barfed or cried.) But this year is different. This year I’m... wait for it... happy. And so grateful for where I am, who I am, and everyone who has helped me on my journey to health & sobriety. 32 was good to me, and for 33 I wanted to say a big old thank you. So I hosted a Spring fundraiser for @friendlyhousela (the first recovery home for women in the United States) in LA last week. It was the best day ever and @anniecampbell literally brought a Pinterest board to life!!! And today, rather than presents, I’d love for you to donate to Friendly House, which is dedicated to helping women navigate the journey through addiction to recovery. It’s a journey I know first hand can only be attempted with love and support, which is why I have started a scholarship fund for women who are determined to recover but don’t have the financial means to begin. Go to the link in my bio to donate. Thank you to everyone who came out to support last week; you melt my heart. Thank you for the birthday wishes. And a special thank you to those of you who donate. It brings me such joy to think of how together we can directly affect so many women who have forgotten that they matter. Let’s remind them! Lots of LOVE xo
Happy Mother’s Day to America’s Preeminent Hot Jewish Luxury Goth! You’re my everything @lauriesimmons! #HappyMothersDay 💓
“Everything goes. I am working very hard at not thinking about how everything goes.” Joan Didion, Play It As It Lays ☀️ Goodbye for a little while, Los Angeles. You have been such a blindingly sweet surprise these last 10 years as I’ve made a beautiful home with @greer_lankton_archives_museum and learned that family takes different forms than I imagined and joy can be as simple as a purple door. I am off for some adventures in other cities and countries because my heart and body are ready to make new things from new places, and when I’m back in your arms I will hug and kiss you harder than I ever have. Keep the princess bed warm, kittens, and don’t forget that avocado is not a religion and pilates isn’t a lifestyle but skepticism isn’t much fun either, and therein lies the magic of LA. Til soon.
#tbt remember that time you were at the Met for the most magical night of the year and you felt something weird down there and your surgical wound had opened on its own and looked like something from Lord of the Rings maybe even the ring itself and you teetered to the bathroom to page a doctor and @jemima_jo_kirke laid you down on the cool floor and you moaned “oh my God I’ve ruined everything” and @mgyllenhaal was petting your feet and @caradelevingne was making cute faces and before you could cry @cassblackbird said “stop! You’re going to want this picture later.” And she was right. Oh, Met, I am coming 4 you.
The mother & daughter that nightgown together... probably die in the same bed? Not sure, but I really love you @lauriesimmons
field notes 4/28- came upon an influencer in the wild
Religion is filling your hands with paperbacks @strandbookstore (support indie booksellers read books give books as gifts books are my truest friends they never bail or judge or sleep with your ex or subtweet📚)
If you had told me when I was listening to Speak Now in my childhood bedroom and cry-eating a baguette that not only would I meet @taylorswift but that she’d be a ride or die, never give up when it’s tough, magical fairy of a friend I would have told you to go listen to Teardrops on My Guitar and leave me alone. But almost 7 years in and she’s still the best. Her new song & video (Me) is the pastel fantasy we need right now 🧼 🐚 ☁️ 🌸 ☔️ Listen & watch, again & again! (Also don’t stand next to her if you don’t like looking like a precocious child in an SNL wig in all joint photos...)
If you find yourself in #NOLA for @jazzfest next weekend, check out my friends @redtruckgallery who have graciously included my water color/ink portraits In the lineup for their show “EXPLODIR”! The focus of my practice is art as therapy, women who use the creative process as a means of survival, recovery, healing and growth. Basically I just like to paint pics of intense eccentric broads (images of @chelseahandler @batshevadress @aminatou & @willa.3 are included here.) I will continue to work with Red Truck as I delve deeper into this medium. Make sure to catch the other talented artists I’ll be hanging alongside @sean__morris @hydeon @tinylittlelives @mister_caitlin @po_nwar @fragmentation @homelesscop @alexeckmanlawn @alexyanes @poni @moon_patrol and @jayriggioart @marimarki The opening reception is Friday May 3rd 7-10PM
I love literature!
I met Alissa Bennett my freshman year of college. I was a miserable virgin who had spent my life savings on a pair of Stella McCartney heels I wore every day even though I have a genetic condition that makes walking in stilettos nearly impossible. She was a twice married international model who had returned to college but was so worldly and sophisticated that we were all afraid to talk to her. She was obsessed with Victorian notions of female virtue and she often wore antique mourning jewelry made of real human hair. She also worked full time at an exclusive boutique that would have sold Vetements if Vetements existed yet and she was writing a thesis that focused on the sexual appeal of the tubercular woman. I once called her goth and she corrected me. One day she found me weeping in the bathroom because my hairless cat Thor was in the hospital. My tears made her cry, and she hugged me and told me she was also having a hard week because her husband (who she had recently married for the second time) was having an affair with some fancy rando. I decided anybody who hurt Alissa was my enemy and that I would use all my powers to humiliate them for crossing such a smart sleek bitch. Back in class she winked at me. The school year ended. I transferred and she graduated, got a job, became a mother, wrote zines and reviews and stories and checks. Then one day on Instagram I happened upon a page that told ornate tales of celebrity death, commenting not only on the lurid details but also on the culture that drives famous and desired people to self immolate. I was like “wow who is this genius?” It was Alissa. I wrote, simply, “I found you.” Now we have a podcast called The C Word that launches May 11 only on @hearluminary. The C Word is crazy, not cunt, though we use that too. We talk about women who history (and the internet) has called crazy, and their stories are a way for us to better understand ourselves. That’s always the case with celebrity, with the salacious details of someone else’s decline and the joy we take in burying women only to exhume them years later then scream at them for being soiled. I love you, Alissa. You make this city fun again. LINK IN BIO
Just a quick pic to celebrate @taylorswift’s new Instagram filter and also to commend myself for having gone a whole year without chopping off my hair with kitchen scissors in a fit of dramatic self-loathing!
hey @harinef this is what I was doing while we talked on the phone about our feelings for an hour. it’s a painting of me pretending to be you.

Today I’m in the miraculous position of being one year sober. I’ve done a lot of cool things in this life, but none has brought me the peace, joy and lasting connections that being part of a sober fellowship has (not even all girls camp. Sorry, Bunk Kingfisher.) Life is full of problems, but the cool thing about this one is that there is a solution: in every city, in many countries, you can find a group of people who are working hard to live sober, accountable lives and want to support you on your quest to do the same. I didn’t know I had an issue with drugs for a long time: because they were doctor prescribed, because I was outwardly successful and not a wild in da club party chick. But wouldn’t you say that hurting people you love is an issue? Wouldn’t you say feeling lost and lonely much of the time is an issue? Wouldn’t you say wearing shorts to a movie premiere *is* an issue? Sobriety hasn’t fixed my world. Life is still challenging- that’s the nature of the game. But every day I am surprised by the richness and depth of, well, reality. I don’t need to escape this beautiful carnival. Instead, I’m on the ride. Please remember you are never too far gone, too broken or too unique. There are people in plain sight waiting to help you. Let’s do this.
It’s a real toss up as to who loves @chelseahandler more, Ingrid the dog or me. I am so glad I got to paint her wise pretty LOL face the night before her book release. Today, her new memoir Life Will Be The Death of Me is available everywhere and imho it’s the most personal and honest thing she’s ever shared, and that’s really saying something. I’m proud of ya, mama 😍 🎨❤️
Just painted a quick picture of the inner ME!
sometimes the thing you’re most scared of being called is the best thing you can call yourself. thank you @havenstudiobk for labeling me... and to my sisters in this dizzying but starry slog- i am lasso’d to you!
Being best friends with her is like a hair raising all-nighter with some very romantic interludes. Let’s hope y’all get the same treatment on Instagram. Welcome to the jungle @jemima_jo_kirke 💎
Anyone who knows me (or knows *of* me) equates me with 2 things: nudity and pelvic pain. I’ll take it if it lets me spread the good word. And now, I’m dating & connecting my scars from 12 surgeries as part of my endo sister @georgiewileman’s campaign #thisisendometriosis (March is endometriosis awareness month) to raise awareness of endometriosis and the multiple surgeries that are performed every year to try and ease the symptoms of an incurable disease that effects roughly 1 out of 10 women, yet is so often ignored or dismissed as a mental health issue (uh yeah, when you ignore our pain it sure becomes one!) Let’s make some noise this coming bikini season. PS: Should I just go for it and make these lines permanent? PPS: Trying to write the dates upside down on my stomach is the only downside of living alone.
On this day in 2013, Agnes Varda told me she just couldn’t stop making things, that she wrote every morning starting at 4am. She showed me a notebook full of drawings of possible props and then she finished the leftover drinks on all the tables around us. It was her idea to pound it out. Rest in power to the best ever to do it.
Patron saint of the lost but brave #MaryOliver 🙏🏼
This painting by Lee Krasner looks like how I want 2019 to feel: colorful, madcap, powered by instinct and connection. It looks like the buzz and zip of creativity in action. And it looks like fruit loops. Mmm, fruit loops. Happy #2019, people ❤️
Your Art Will Save Your Life by @bethpickensconsulting is our December book of the month. It is an inspiring, beautiful, supportive read for anyone trying to get their creative path on the right track, especially in this political climate. Use #keepit100ld to stay in the discussion.
#Repost @theaidsmemorial @pokeacupuncture ・・・ 🔻 . “Eugene Arnold Krakower, New York, NY. . When I was about 7 or 8, Uncle Gene took my brother and I to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The streets were packed and freezing, but my Uncle had been a union electrician for the City of New York like his father and knew the construction sites on the parade route. . Uncle Gene hoisted us up on a definitely-not-child-safe scaffolding where we watched Mighty Mouse and Kermit in full vibrancy and spectacle three stories about all the regular people crammed in at street level who didn’t have a magical uncle. . Uncle Gene was a rascal- wickedly funny and full of playful disobedience. He was so different than my parents’ “normal” pale friends with their Camrys and swimming pools and stiff children with whom I was meant to play. . He was equal parts kid and grown-up, and had boats, and explosives, and a menagerie of wild pets including a bobcat who once famously bit my father on the ass. Uncle Gene thought it was hysterical. . Uncle Gene was so fully his own thing and he gave zero fucks, even though he died in 1990, thirty years before basic people would coin the expression. . He made all the other populace of my world feel so flat. Uncle Gene was always vertical, three stories tall, ecstatically alive with color and mischief.” — by @pokeacupuncture . #whatisrememberedlives #theaidsmemorial #aidsmemorial #worldaidsday #worldaidsday2018
Oh please. I’m too much woman for you, Ryan 😍🥰
