#Repost @elephantcrisisfund ・・・ U.S law enforcement agencies have broken a major drug and ivory smuggling network in Africa worth millions of dollars, arresting two of the four kingpins at the heart of the operation. The arrests by the Southern District of New York and the U.S Fish & Wildlife Service, are a major breakthrough in efforts to stamp out the illegal global wildlife trade and solid proof that the trade is linked to serious crime including narcotics and money laundering. The bust also exposes the deep transnational criminal links between East and West Africa - one of the alleged criminal leaders was arrested in Senegal and is awaiting extradition, while another was arrested in Uganda and is now facing trial in the U.S. We congratulate all those involved in making the arrests and are confident that by extraditing the accused to the U.S, justice will be properly served. We hope this case sends a message to all traffickers, especially those high level criminals who think they are untouchable, that wildlife trafficking is no longer an easy or safe form of crime. #Repost @guardian Breakthrough alert: the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund, which manages $1tn (£786bn) of Norway’s assets, has been given the go ahead for the largest fossil fuel divestment ever. The country's parliament voted plans into law for the fund to dump investments in eight coal companies and an estimated 150 oil producers. The fund will also have a legal mandate to invest directly in renewable energy projects. The legislation empowers it to invest up to $20bn, beginning with wind and solar projects in developed markets. The fund’s blow to fossil fuel companies comes as calls increase for investors to end their contribution to the climate crisis. In an open letter to the European Investment Bank, 80 civil society organisations and academics called on the central bank to end its fossil fuel financing, which topped €2.4bn (£2.1bn) in 2018.

#Repost @whalesanctuaryproject Whale Aid Russia – Plans for Returning the Orcas and Belugas to the Ocean: Last July, more than 100 beluga whales and orca were captured in Russian waters with the purpose of selling them to marine entertainment parks in China. But last month, the Russian government invited a team led by Jean-Michel Cousteau and the Whale Sanctuary Project to visit the whales, assess their condition, and advise on whether they can be returned to the ocean.  We have concluded that all of the whales being held at the so-called “whale jail” can indeed be rehabilitated and released, and we now move to the next stage: How to implement this ambitious plan, and there are significant challenges to be met. - Our recommendation to the Russian government is that releasing them in or near where they were captured would have the highest likelihood of successful release. - We do not support any plan that would release the whales directly into the open ocean adjacent to their sea pens, as simply opening the gates and letting the whales out would be a grave mistake that would jeopardize their health, welfare and survivability. - Our team remains committed to providing expertise and assistance to facilitate a responsible rehabilitation and release program, and to help mobilize the necessary international resources to implement it. Their unfortunate human-created status has even been featured by Guinness World Records – Yet, many people don’t even know they exist! Pangolins are timid, slow-moving creatures covered in scales made from keratin (like our hair or nails). When a pangolin is threatened it will roll into a ball and relies on its scaly armor to protect itself. Their sharp scales may deter predators such as lions, but unfortunately their instinctive defenses do not work against humans. Superstition and greed drives intense poaching of this uniquely adapted animal. The pangolin is most often poached for its meat and scales. #Repost @elephantcrisisfund The last remaining elephants of Chinko, in the south-east Central African Republic, are getting extra protection in the form of a newly purchased ultra-light motorized aircraft, part-funded by the ECF.  The Savannah Aircraft, which arrived in December, is now one of two patrolling the skies above the Chinko Protected Area. Thanks to this, as well as helicopter support and a permanent forward operating base (also funded by the ECF) @africanparksnetwork rangers now have easier access to elephant priority areas.
