"I enjoy exploring the historical and cultural sides of the cities I visit, and was lucky enough to have such a tour of Budapest with a local, my friend Zultan. We had just visited Matthias Church and I was about to put my camera away. Suddenly, the light from the setting sun illuminated the King Stephen equestrian monument. I love how the majestic posture of Hungary’s first king leaps out against the blue sky. It was the very last photograph I took that day, and one of my favourites of Budapest.", says our reader Supriyo Das Photograph: Supriyo Das . . #lpmi #lpmitravels #postcards #instaclick #shotoftheday #photograph #beautifuldestination #history #culture #budapest #zultan #matthiaschurch #kingstephen #hungary #equestrian #monument

"I was on a bus when I noticed a lorry from the English National Ballet parked in the street near the Palace Theatre. I assumed the lorry was carrying all the stage equipment that the troupe needed. Instantly drawn to the poster, I got off the bus and took a few snaps from the opposite side of the road as people walked on the pavement behind the trailer. I specifically like this photo as the person whose legs these were was clearly in a hurry and was running. "The BRO (Border Roads Organisation) has some witty one-liners put up across the border roads that are not only funny, but also provide a very direct message to travellers. I spotted one such message at the base of Chang La pass during a trip to Ladakh in winter. As we waited for our cab driver to put chains on the tyres, I couldn’t help but notice the contrast between the message on the board and the cautious manoeuvring by the army truck drivers. I’m pretty sure they were not in ‘high spirits’.", says our reader Vasanth Gopalakrishnan Photograph: Vasanth Gopalakrishnan . . #lpmi #lpmitravels #postcards #instaclick #shotoftheday #photograph #beautifuldestination #borderroadsorganisations #oneliners #witty #changlapass #ladakh #roadtrip #caution #roadsign #afterwhiskydrivingrisky

"We were on an eight-day tour in Egypt and had spent the day in Luxor, discovering the magnificence of the old Egyptian capital with visits to the Valley of the Kings and then to the Temple of Karnak. On our way back into Cairo, our bus got stuck in traffic. Looking out of the window, I spotted a newspaper vendor by the side of the road and quickly grabbed my camera. I loved the contrast between living, breathing Cairo and the monuments of Luxor. I found the people of Egypt to be just as interesting as its rich history and museums, and this picture sums that up for me.", says our reader Kevin Thornhill Photograph: Kevin Thornhill . . #lpmi #lpmitravels #postcards #instaclick #shotoftheday #photograph #beautifuldestination #egypt #luxor #valleyofthekings #templeofkarnak #cairo #museum #street #art #history #taleofacity

"I found an elevated vantage point before the Sitges carnival parade began, and in front of my camera lens danced Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, Harry Potter, medieval knights, brides and aliens. After an hour, I noticed that the confetti covering the whole street looked very much like cherry-blossom petals. At that exact moment, a group of girls dressed as geisha appeared! Their costumes were splendid, complete with hair and make-up, and they were holding elegant, brightly-coloured umbrellas – it was the most memorable part of this Catalan celebration.", says our reader Dima Dudin Photograph: Dima Dudin . . #lpmi #lpmitravels #postcards #instaclick #shotoftheday #photograph #beautifuldestination #sitgescarnival #spain #street #geisha #costumes #umbrella #bright #happyfaces

"The Apsara dance is a Khmer classical dance that’s popular in Cambodia. These dancers are a regular feature at the temples of Angkor, where they pose with tourists. While visiting the ruins, I came across this group of apsara dancers who were evidently tired from all that posing and were taking a power-nap. "I was in a quiet little village near Beatenberg, Switzerland, last year. It was very charming, and all the wooden houses had working chimneys puffing out smoke. There was a light drizzle and a cool breeze, and we noticed that every house had a decorated walk-way, with beautiful handmade or recycled art – like a permanent art display. This particular one, with an old shoe used as a planter, grabbed my attention, and, with permission from the owners, I took this photograph.", says our reader Deepak Agrawal Photograph: Deepak Agrawal . . #lpmi #lpmitravels #postcards #instaclick #shotoftheday #photograph #beautifuldestination #village #beatenberg #switzerland #woodenhouse #chimneys #planter

"I was in Tunisia this September, and thought it was wonderful. While there, I visited Matmata’s mountain caves. These caves have been used as homes for years, and some people live in them even today. The elders of the family I visited look after camels, while the ladies weave sheep-wool carpets. Wheat is ground using a stone crusher, and the diet consists primarily of olives, dates, meat and salads. They still use kerosene lamps! "We woke early on the day of our trek to see the mountain gorillas, feeling full of excitement and anticipation. The journey through the forest was a challenge, our guides having to cut through the undergrowth as we went, but we all had a spring in our step knowing what lay ahead. Suddenly, we were told the gorillas were very close. We pushed our way through the final few trees and there, in the clearing in front of us, was the gorilla family: males, females, babies, several silverbacks and playful adolescents. I was brought to tears; it was such a feeling of privilege to see these beautiful, intelligent animals in the wild. They were on their way back to their villages after selling handmade goods in the main town early that morning. They asked us questions about our lives in Australia and were very curious about our family life. It was intriguing to hear how they go about their day-to-day lives. I had sat down for a drink when I looked up and saw one of the women talking and laughing with the group. I pulled out my camera to try to capture her natural beauty and her amazing costume. "We arrived at Monument Valley to bright sunlight and clear skies, but overheard one of the native Navajo Indians saying that a storm was closing in and should hit the area by early morning. You don’t normally wish for storms on your holiday, but my heart was racing at the thought of thunder and lightning around those famous buttes. Sure enough, we woke the next day to one of the most dramatic storms we have ever witnessed. I have tried several times to capture lightning, but have always been too slow. "My epic trek to Roopkund was a journey of self-discovery. My ‘bloody hell’ moment came just five minutes away from the lake.
