"We need a new relationship with nature, a new way of living with each other, the planet the other 8 million other species we share it with." 👏 Dr. @AyanaEliza speaking with @AtlasOfTheFuture.⁣ ⁣ Yesterday, the #Trump administration announced a change to the Endangered Species Act that would make it easier to remove a species from the endangered list, weakening their critically needed protection. Yet the #EndangeredSpeciesAct has proven to successfully support endangered animals, with 99% of listed species now recovering from their race against extinction. The timing for this roll-back is dire, this past May the United Nations published a Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity that warned over 1 million species might be extinct within the next few years. Diversity of voices, actions, and species is critical for a healthy earth and environment. Double tap if you believe in protecting our earth, ocean and all of the creatures that keep the world in balance. Who's heard of a nurdle before? 🙋‍♀️🙋‍♂️ These small plastic pellets are about the size of a lentil and countless billions of these tiny plastic building blocks are used each year to make the #plastic products we use every day, from soft-drink bottles to takeaway containers. But nurdles pose a big threat to our delicate ocean and coastal communities. ⁣ ⁣ Once in the ocean and coastal waterways, nurdles absorb toxic chemicals and are often mistaken for food by animals. They also wash up by the millions on beaches, leaving coastal communities to deal with the toxic ramifications. Plastic production is slated to increase by 40% in the next decade yet we have no plan in place to tackle the #plasticpollution crises we are facing today. Use your voice to #beatplasticpollution, tell the @epagov you want new rules to protect our ocean and our communities by signing the petition link in our bio. #CleanSeas⁣ ⁣ 📸 @chrisleidyphotography, @smartie_lids_on_the_beach

✨ Each and every animal in the #ocean plays a vital role in the balance of its marine ecosystem.⁣ ⁣ Humpback whales are found in every ocean across the world. Known for their magical and uniquely different songs, these whales swim close to their young, often touching one another with their flippers with what appear to be gestures of affection. What's truly amazing, is that whales help keep every creature on earth alive - even humans! They provide vital nutrients to phytoplankton (through their poop!), which in turn create over 70% of the oxygen we breathe. Today, the biggest threats to these gentle giants are collisions with ships and entanglement in discarded fishing gear - which is primarily made from plastic.⁣ ⁣ How do you protect the ocean in your own unique way each and every day? "As a scientist, I respect the pursuit of new knowledge. As a human being, I cannot remain idle while the rights and voices of the Kānaki Ōiwi people are being shut out. I stand for their right as the true stewards of this mountain and call for better care of the mauna." – @CristinaMittermeier, co-founder of @SeaLegacy. On the morning of July 15th, the government began construction of the controversial Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) at the sacred summit of Mauna Kea in Hawaiʻi. That very same morning, a line of elders, known as kūpuna, positioned themselves in the roadway leading up to the summit of Maunakea in peaceful protest while a group of seven Native Hawai'ian protestors chained themselves to a cattle guard. The Hawai'ian government called a state of emergency during these peaceful protests. Sacred leaders, elders, and teachers were arrested when the government authorities arrived. Our friends and co-founders of @SeaLegacy, @PaulNicklen and @CristinaMittermeier, spent six months in Oahu, working on a feature story for @NatGeo and were shown true respect and kindness from Native Hawai'ians. Mauna Kea is not a battleground for culture versus science, as it is often portrayed, but instead a moment to recognize the interconnectedness of the two, as the Native Hawai'ians do. This struggle to protect the muana only earned public attention in 2015 when protests against the construction of the telescope first started, even though Native Hawai'ians have been working for the past five decades to protect their sacred summit. Join us in standing with the Kānaki Ōiwi people and tag a friend in the comments, asking them to begin #TurningTheTide for #MuanaKea with us. The sad reality is that #plasticpollution is becoming the new normal beneath the #sea. Photos by @PaulNicklen and story from @cristinamittermeier in celebration of yesterday’s #PADIwomensdiveday // I was lucky to receive my initial diving instruction while still in University and I have been a PADI certified scuba diver since 1987. It has been my great fortune to have travelled the world as a photographer, diver and conservationist, exploring the world’s oceans on assignments that challenged, changed me and propelled me to take on every new experience head on. In Antarctica I photographed an underwater graveyard, where the bones and bodies of blue whales are still disintegrating a hundred years after being slaughtered for their oil, the process slowed by the temperature of the water. I’ve looked sharks in the eye, come face to face with an orca, swam next to crocodile in Cuba’s Gardens of the Queen. I am proud to be a diver every day, but on #PadiWomensDiveDay I am honoured to celebrate passion for the ocean and the spirit of adventure with all of my fellow women divers, as well as all the little girls out there who dream of trying on a scuba suit one day. Wow, THANK YOU #podsquad for helping launch the #MuseumOfPlastic last night in #NYC! We are so grateful for all of our friends and collaborators who helped make this launch a success. We were humbled to also have the @UNPGA join us to share out her commitment to #cleanseas - including announcing that the @UnitedNations is now single-use plastic free, due to the hard work of her and her team. 👏Special thanks to our co-founder @AdrianGrenier and our Executive Director @DuneIves for opening the evening.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ The Museum officially opens TOMORROW, #WorldOceansDay. Stop in and find solutions to the 500 BILLION single-use plastic bottles we use every year.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 🚰 MuseumOfPlastic.Org ⁣⁣⁣ 🗓️ June 8th-12th ⁣⁣⁣ 💧11am-7pm, 📍473 Broadway, SoHo, NYC⁣⁣⁣ 🎟 FREE to attend⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Special thanks to our partners:⁣⁣ @DrinkEverAndEver⁣⁣⁣ @HP⁣⁣⁣ @SwellBottle⁣⁣⁣ @attndotcom⁣⁣⁣ @bacardi⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ & to our creative team:⁣⁣ @younghero.us⁣⁣⁣ @afigmentof⁣ ⁣ 📸 @juliancassady
