The latest release from #zafawines is 50% Carbonic Petite Pearl & 50% cider and has me feeling all warm & fuzzy but sassy & demanding & popping my shoulders like it's Junglepussy's "Trader Joe" in a bottle. Stunning garnet in the glass, it smells like macerated raspberries swallowed an expensive brie and tastes like sour cherries fingerblasting savory black olives on a hot afternoon while a cool breeze of sage saunters through the window. Can't decide if I want to just fuck this wine or throw it an impressive picnic & maybe watch a movie later? Regardless, feelings are caught and I'm already heartbroken knowing it'll probably never be in my wine fridge again. But who knows, maybe it'll text me in the middle of the night in three months. 🙏🏼🍾🍷 #MARwines

She is one of the most inspiring people I've ever met, with a genuine heart of gold that is so sweet & generous & humble, who built her company from nothing while getting her PhD. She does not get nearly the credit she deserves for all that she has & continues to do for producers & consumers alike. 🍾❤️🍷 Also I can't believe this is the only photo I have of the two of us considering I've traveled the world with her, both literally & figuratively through the beautiful wines she imports. But I guess it makes sense since this is us "Strek-ing a pose" at @strekov1075 this past spring. 😂😘
It’s been a weird day/week/month/year. Been spending a lot of time thinking about what makes me happy & how to make more of that. How to process past & present trauma. How to allow myself to be open to the future. How to forgive myself for all the shit I shouldn’t have ever blamed myself for in the first place. Reframing success & failure. Reevaluating relationships. Reminding myself it’s all okay, and knowing it even if I don’t feel it. 💫 Growing up suuux. But at least we have wine & flowers. Or one of the two. Or neither, but hopefully a good hug.

#TBT to @bonappetitmag’s 2016 September issue, that featured this full page photo of me & all the outdated wine rules to break. Still blows my mind to think about it, such a dream come true. I was in Palm Springs alone finishing my book when the issue came out & I cried when I opened the magazine & saw it. Also blows my mind that that was already three years ago & somehow was ONLY three years ago. It’s one of my favorite photos ever & was one of the most fun shoots, both thanks to the insanely talented @sunnyshokrae. ❤️ And also features my illustrious trademark shorts that have since been retired (but remain in my closet to be revered forever).
One of the final edits I made to my book is a footnote on page 41, in the middle of a rant about how much I hate Moscato, that in November 2016 I finally found one I loved. It goes unnamed in the book because I didn't have enough time to figure out what it was I drank at @barbandini but knew I had to be honest & that it was a true lesson about how nothing is finite in wine. It was Farnea's "Emma," a wine I've come to look forward to every year since. It looks like a peach so ripe it exploded in your hands and smells like watercolors made of apricot & gardenias wilting in the heat. And it tastes like all of that-- exploding peaches, vivid apricots, melting gardenias-- wrapped up in marigold leaves with stemmy tannins. It turns whatever you thought Moscato was on its head; a reminder that wine is limitless, and so is the world. And I feel that especially as I sit in my backyard with my husband & pets on our new @article set, which I realize sounds like I'm descending into bullshit, but the truth is, Ben threw out all our old hand-me-down patio furniture because it was reminding me of things I didn't want to be reminded of. And now I'm getting to create new memories because while shit can suck & feel stuck, the possibilities around us are still infinite. 🥂💫 Nabbed at @psychicwinesla, imported by @scuola_di_vino. There are coincidences, but in life there are also affirmations. To coincidentally be able to spend time with one of my greatest heroes @erikalust & her delightful family this summer was definitely an affirmation that regardless of how hard, frustrating & sad the road can be, I'm on the right one. For those of you who have followed me for some time, you probably know I'm a longtime fan of Erika's #XConfessions site & films, as well as her activism. (And if you didn't know, now you do!) Her work helped me not only reclaim my sexuality after many assaults but also to be proud of my sexuality & to celebrate it. She has given me, and so many others, power in ways we may have only dreamed of and I aspire one day to create work as impactful as hers. Thank you Erika, Pablo & the girls for making this summer extra special. ❤️

The name of this wine reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas: "The place fairly reeked of high-grade Formica & plastic palm trees." The wine itself couldn't be further from that description, but @colleformica's "Formica Pazza Gialla" sparkler of Malvasia & Trebbiano from Lazio is something I'd want to be pouring in my fantasized, early 1970's & peak Formica, poolside cocktail hours. It goes down like grassy lemonade with stemmy, blossoming Thyme poured over cold concrete cubes & the rim of the glass rubbed with the essence of chlorine drying on Coppertoned skin. It was so reinvigorating to visit a region with so much history, so much potential & so much to discover with winemakers who are taking huge risks to make natural wine, especially in local economies that generally reject it. Once upon a time, I lead a bus mutiny to go explore Doric's .85 hectare vineyard & was rewarded with incredible views of misty clouds pouring over mountaintops & some of the most exciting wines I've had all year (my camera/phone did not join the mutiny smh). Completely untouched by modern farming in their tiny village, their bottles of Kosmas, Roditis & Malagousia are astounding & honestly couldn't keep any of them in front of me long enough to write about at the dinner we had with literally the ENTIRE village of like 50 people BUT TRUST. THESE WINES ARE IT. I also found my future (haunted) house, got a new Grandyama and had enough tsipouro out of damiganas for DJ HTML420 to come out of retirement & take over a hotel lobby (check the Greece IG Highlight). ROSES?! FOR ME?! YOU SHOULDN’T HAVE! 🥰 I hadn’t seen this before but at @kalogris_organic_winery (and many other Greek vineyards) they use roses as indicators of powder mildew & other infestations because roses have the same soil & sun requirements as vines but show infestations through their petals. Looks like some healthy Moschofilero right there and tasted like it too— like licking a salt block infused with honeysuckle, lemon & pine on wet stone. “Unexpected Portrait of The Writer in Nonchalant Practice with Stinging Eyes” is one of @amyatwoodwine’s finest works, painted in the alley of Richard Stávek’s Shire while enjoying barrel samples as birds chirped & I wrote mostly illegible (re: eyes swelling shut in vineyards lol) flowery bullshit about fresh lemongrass dripping with honey and some of the lyrics from The Hollies’ “Long Cool Woman (in a Black Dress)”. I wish I could tell you which of Stávek’s cuvées to try but honestly we had like 95 & I know not that many are brought to the states, so just make sure to try one if you see them. @jennyfrancois

WHITE ZIN REDEMPTION 🍇💫 My first piece for @latimesfood on @sonomamtnwinery’s “Zin Contact” in today’s paper. 🍇💫 I've wanted to write for the Times since moving to Los Angeles & becoming obsessed, like everyone else, with Jonathan Gold. When I found out another food writer I greatly admire @greasetrap was taking over the food section, I sent my first cold email & was scared to death, and even more scared when he actually knew who I was & asked for some ideas. I kind of put all my eggs in this pitch about how @sonomamtnwinery’s White Zinfandel was a picture of California wine’s future & have been pinching myself ever since Peter gave me the go-ahead to write it. So here it is, baby's first LA Times article. A little reminder that dreams can come true. The "Forks & Knives" Grüner Veltliner immediately transported me to the Magic Hour of a fictional Palm Springs afternoon with the fruitiness and acidity of an optimistic, tiki-inspired cocktail. It filled me with a specific kind of happiness I hadn't quite felt again until I was in Milan's vineyards drinking "Danger 380 Volts." Despite it being a different wine it sent that same pure yet mischievous happiness banging around my bones like a slapped pinball hitting all the lights with sunshine pouring out of my thighs & a Beach Boys' song playing in my pants. I coined a little phrase on the Austria trip: "Drinkable, but thinkable." © And @koppitschwine really encapsulates that. Alexander & Maria are so authentically & enthusiastically driven to make wines that make you smile so much your face hurt, because they are so fun to drink, but also because of the incredible care they put into making them. They were just as excited to pass jars of soil around the table as they were to #rosstest with me. There's these particular flavors of juice at the continental breakfasts in European hotels. They come from a little machine & have vague names like "Vitamin Mix!" next to a group picture of cheerily bright assorted fruits or just a pineapple but it doesn't taste like shitty pineapple juice from a machine, it tastes AMAZING. I LOVE THEM ALL & THEY KEEP ME ALIVE WHILE TRAVELING. AND THERE IS NOTHING ELSE THAT TASTES LIKE THEM EXCEPT @KOPPITSCHWINE'S WINES! 🍍🍑🥤 These are so playful & alive & make you feel optimistic for a new day, like you're living in their equally happy labels. And now I know that I don’t know anyone who lives as truly as Bradford does, whose values span from the company he keeps to the wine shops he owns and continually influences the wine community to be its best. I have the utmost respect & admiration for him & his work, and trying to distill that into an IG caption is even stupider than pitching essays on the dude. This wild mix of 50% Marsanne & 44% Roussanne with bits of Syrah & Grenache is like drinking grapefruit lemonade while you're half-stoned in the best way possible & wearing sepia-toned vintage sunglasses. It makes me desperately miss youthful late mornings in June; waking & baking before walking past the train tracks to Trestles or unfurling random blankets over Echo Park's crab grass or hitting the 10 to who knows where, but definitely The Coral's "In The Morning" is playing. HAPPY EARTH DAY 🌎 Sorry I didn't post this earlier. TBH I was smoking weed & playing the Sims as anyone on 420 would be doing 😂 BUT! As many of my followers know, I've committed myself to putting as much thought into every product in my life as I do my wine & food. It's easy to forget that living sustainably goes beyond agriculture & it's not easy to be sustainable in every way-- nor should anyone expect to be! It's one step at a time. For me it was wine & food, followed by two of my other passions, skincare & fashion. For skincare/beauty, I look for what's cruelty-free & as natural as possible. When it comes to fashion, I only buy vintage, from sustainable companies or save up for designer items (to keep forever, bc that in itself is a type of sustainability) & ABSOLUTELY NO FAST FASHION. BUY ONCE, BUY WELL is the motto, not just with clothes but with design too! Of course no one is perfect & I don't want to get nihilistic about how none of our shit matters if the top companies in the world don't start changing their practices BUT! WE CAN VOTE WITH OUR DOLLARS! SO VOTE FOR THE EARTH! It's harder than voting for that very cute dress at HMZara21, but everyone in the world is buying that same damn dress anyway so fuck it & go be different.
