a new @clairo song — ‘sofia’ — is out today. this was probably the 5th or 6th song we wrote in a 4-day writing session last November. it’s wild that the whole album is now one week away. what can i say— i’m psyched for the 🌎 to hear it and i still am of the opinion y’all ain’t ready. i think we may have fully snapped with this record.

“Closer to You” — the second single off @clairo ‘s Immunity is out today. This was probably the 4th song we wrote together back in November when we spent a week in my studio not knowing what was happening— building tracks from scratch and making songs off gut reactions. I remember Claire writing the lyrics and melody for this song so quickly it was like it came from another realm.
end of an era
making this album with @clairo was one of my favorite experiences so far as a human. the first single is out today and the whole record comes out on August 2. I don’t want to say too much but I will say this— expect the unexpected.
‘Knock Down the House’ made me cry. The world seems so deeply fucked up, but I feel a deep sense of hope well up inside me when I witness this person speak. She inspires me.

Happy Birthday to my doge @hamiltonleithauser ... one of the kindest and most fun people I know. This pic is from 2016, the “I Had a Dream that You Were Mine” sessions. Flashback to spring 2008, Vampire Weekend opened for the Walkmen in a few southern cities— I was definitely struck back then by what a mellow and approachable guy Hamilton was— and that he really loved chess. Flash forward to March 2013 , we got lunch in Dumbo, MVOTC was in the can, and a couple months away from release. I remember playing Ham “Don’t Lie” — which was— I felt sure— gonna be on country radio (don’t ask why I thought this— but also—that still could happen one day). That day at my apartment Hamilton sang some melodies over an instrumental I had kicking around called “Paris 1959” (it was inspired by the soundtrack to the 400 Blows). I loved the demo we made but I wondered if we’d ever finish it. Well it took a handful of years but we did finish it and in fact we finished a whole record together. Making that record felt easy to do and in retrospect... maybe it was? We both had other things going on but it always felt good to block off a week or so to get together and work on our batch of songs. 1959 always felt like the closer, and tracks 1-8 didn’t give us much trouble, but we probably wrote and recorded about 5 or 6 different ‘Track 9’s’ before feeling like we had the right one. Track 9 was the struggle but it felt like a river that we had to cross. I guess we could have put out a nine song record, but that wouldn’t have felt right to either of us.

woke up thinking about my old spot in Dumbo. rented this apartment from August 2010-November 2013. first time having my own place. wrote and recorded a lot of songs there. had some bright and some dark nights there. it was the last place i lived in in NYC before i moved west.
This past September we did a special live version of “Half-Light” and captured it on film— each member of the Half-Light quartet takes a solo that quotes a famous melody — it’s up on Youtube and IGTV now. Julian McClanahan (5-String Violin) quoting Si Beag Si Mor. David Tangney (Cello) quoting Beethoven's Ode to Joy (Theme from Symphony No. 9) Wynton Grant (Violin 1) quoting Simple Gifts / Lord of the Dance and Nick Kennerly (Violin 2) quoting the guitar solo from Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush
