Only two weeks left to visit @angeldufuche’s solo exhibition at the @DorskyMuseum, at SUNY-New Paltz, through Sunday, July 14th. @artnet recently reviewed ‘Just My Type’: Angela Dufresne, with writer Katie White describing the “enlivening sense of limitlessness” found in Dufresne’s rarely exhibited portraits, as well as a sense of “hybridity and fluidity” between “phantasm and reality.” #angeladufresne #mblosangeles

Painting in a deft, purposely naive manner, Brandon Landers builds up the surface with thick layers of oil paint, pushing each work to its most expressive potential. Using only a palette knife rather than brush, the choppy impasto marks activate the canvas, giving it an irregularly-textured surface that vibrates with energy. Brandon Landers: Aretha is on view now at @mblosangeles through August 30th. (Scroll to see the hidden surprise on the back of this piece). #mblosangeles #brandonlanders

OPENING TONIGHT. Leo Mock: “. . . and still somehow”. Enigmatic seasides. Clouds plow the skies in surging stormy blacks and ice creamy heaps colored by the shifting lights seeped through LA sunsets and licked by JMW Turner. The sky hues and hazes with ancient harmonies, darkling blues into ethereal seafoam greens, the sun wearing all its age on her face like a yolky dowager, losing not one golden shimmer of radiant grandeur. The exhibition runs from June 21 through August 30, 2019, with an opening reception on Friday, June 21 from 6 to 8 pm. #leomock #mblosangeles

Mariah Robertson’s solo exhibition at the Swope Museum in Terre Haute, IN opens TOMORROW and will remain on view through August 4, 2019. . Mariah Robertson is an alchemist. Her experimental approach to making art has seen images spill from the restrictions of the frame and reach up walls and across floors through installation. Robertson creates images through a ceaseless practice of experimentation in a darkroom for photography. Freeing herself from the classic conventions of photographic practice, she works intuitively with photograms, irregular chemical reactions, solarizations and collage to paint the surface of the photograph and push the magical element of photography’s very limits. #mariahrobertson #mblosangeles #swopeartmuseum . When the artist who currently goes by Dapper Bruce Lafitte returned to his native New Orleans a year after being displaced by Hurricane Katrina, he started making drawings of his parade-mad city’s high-school marching bands. Starting with schools that had been closed by the storm and working from memory, he initiated both his own artistic practice, which has subsequently blossomed in all sorts of directions, and an open-ended document of New Orleans folk history... The figures are thorough, but rudimentary, while the colors, applied with marker, are vivid and precise… The key to the drawings’ magic is the orderly arrangement marching bands take in real life. This lets the artist, formerly known as Bruce Davenport Jr., picture them, and lets us see them, in two ways at once: in a flat grid, with all the feelings of completion and control provided by a well-designed diagram, and at an angled, bird’s-eye view that suggests a larger, more complex vista to explore. Always love getting to see one of Matthew Brandt’s ‘Lakes and Reservoirs’ works. In this series, Brandt leaves prints of landscapes shot around the country to decay, sometimes for days, sometimes for months, in H2O taken from the bodies of water they portray. The result is a psychedelic degradation of the images in a process that join subject and photograph in an intimate union. Lovely write-up by #RachelKushner over at the @ParisReview on Matthew Porter’s flying cars! . . #matthewporter #mblosangeles #parisreview

mblosangeles

In Skyline Vista, Porter presents images of vintage American cars, captured in gravity-defying scenes, as they careen over city streets and highway intersections. Using 1960’s and 1970’s muscle cars, Porter captures the aesthetics and romance of the car in American culture—each one is a character in the urban landscape, set hazardously aloft in cinematic hyperbole. Seen together, they form a topographic sequence of landscapes, mixing bittersweet nostalgia with the hyperreal. The result is a tension between what the eye sees and what the mind knows. Similar to Yves Klein’s Leap Into the Void, Porter’s flying cars offer a sense of freedom and risk, engaging the viewer in a pleasurable, willful suspension of disbelief. Matthew Porter: Skyline Vista is the first time Porter’s celebrated flying muscle car series has been presented together in an exhibition and coincides with the release of Porter’s new monograph, The Heights, published by Aperture. Matthew Porter: Skyline Vista is on view through May 11, 2019, at M+B Gallery in Los Angeles @mblosangeles . #MatthewPorter #MBLosAngeles #artistsoninstagram #contemporaryart
