Tonight at 10 pm ET/9 pm Central, I’ll be on the TV show “Younger,” on TVLand, playing myself. I swear!
Happy book birthday to Richard Panek, whose wonderful book The Trouble with Gravity comes out today. (Reader, I married him.)
To paraphrase a Kim Carnes lyric, “He’s got Ed Asner eyebrows...”
Today I will have been married to Richard Panek for 30 years. How is it possible? To paraphrase a song from “Bye Bye Birdie,” we’ve had a lot of livin’ to do...
Here’s a page from my blooper reel from #TheFemalePersuasion. You can bid on it and other outtakes by writers to support the great @onestorymag during their Farewell my Darlings auction. https://www.32auctions.com/organizations/38557/auctions/66330/auction_items/1809632
What’s more depressing than your neighborhood Walgreens? Your neighborhood Walgreens after it closes for good.
Walking down the street in my neighborhood I came upon myself in the window of Symphony Space, where I will be Wednesday night, with @verymuchso (Amy Rose Spiegel) and Maggie Siff of Showtime’s #Billions. #thefemalepersuasion #bookstagram
My birthday, May 28th, which I share with Brandon Cruz (a fact that once meant a lot to me) has just ended. Mine was lovely, and I hope his was too.
Today is the paperback pub date of my novel The Female Persuasion. It’s been a wonderful year of talking about fiction, feminism, and so much more. Thank you, @riverheadbooks, for just about everything.
For Mother’s Day, here’s the very first story my mother Hilma Wolitzer ever published, back in 1966, in the old “Saturday Evening Post.” I just love the title: “Today, a Woman Went Mad in the Supermarket.”
Here is Sydney, Australia at #sydwritersfest with @likaluca and Rebecca Traister, talking about, you know, feminism. And also taking in the beautiful surroundings and eating Tim Tams.
Well, I played myself on an episode of “Younger,” airing this summer. This is particularly gratifying, because I never got to guest-star on “Mary Tyler Moore” as Rhoda’s even wackier friend. #dayjobsfornovelists #darrenstar #suttonfoster #peterhermann #Younger
When your Oscar nominee loses, there’s only one thing to do: head for the “doughnut wall” on the way out of the Academy Awards.
Hey, I’m all dressed up and at the OSCARS!
Hmm, which of these two movies do I watch on the plane...?
I’m starting my day with a bowl of savory oatmeal and AN OSCAR NOMINATION FOR GLENN CLOSE IN THE WIFE!!!
The image that ruined my childhood: A still from the end of the Vincent Price movie The Fly, when they find the tiny half-man, half-fly, and it says “Helllllllp me.... Hellllllp me....” before being crushed to death with a rock. Childhood was ruined, but I am better now.
Here is my honorary Golden Globe for The Wife, courtesy of West Elm. Happily, Glenn Close got a real one. #thewifefilm #bookstagram #goldenglobes
Glenn Close won a #GoldenGlobe for The Wife... ! Oh, what a night.
Settling in to watch The Golden Globes, for which Glenn Close is nominated for The Wife. Whatever happens, she is brilliant and this has been a writer’s dream from start to finish.
This year, my character in The Wife, Joe Castleman, won the Nobel Prize. And now Glenn Close has been nominated for a Golden Globe. OK, this is too much excitement. It’s time for me to return to obsessing over a paragraph.
In Hong Kong with the extraordinary @CherylStrayed and Susie Orbach at the literary festival. Couldn’t be happier. Litfest_hk
In Toronto for the International Festival of authors, so I had to go to Terroni for the spaghetti al limone. Because it makes me write better. #bookstagram #canadapleaseadoptme
With Lorrie Moore and Richard Russo at the National Book Festival. You can tell it’s really us because we are wearing official badges! #nationalbookfestival #bookstagram
A new middle-grade book, co-written with the great @hgsloan, coming in February. It’s about two 12 year old girls whose single gay dads fall in love and try to make their daughters become friends. (Plus it also has summer camp in it, because I say you can never have too much summer camp...) #bookstagram #middlegradebooks #middlegradefiction #penguinyoungreaders
I went to the store for five minutes and the dog had an idea for a novel. Unfortunately, it’s derivative.
Fancy new UK movie tie-in edition with exact same US author. #thewifefilm #thewifemovie #bookstagram
Hanging out with Glenn Close outside The Paris Theatre last night, where The Wife just opened, and we were doing a Q&A. I was either going to do that, or stay home eating hummus and watching a repeat of Midsomer Murders. Good choice, I think. #thewifefilm #thewifemovie #bookstagram
The Wife opens today! Up against that other movie, The Meg. But I digress... #thewifefilm #bookstagram #moviesaboutwritersnotsharks
Everything tastes better in a Dick Van Dyke Show mug. #dickvandykeshow
Backstage at #TimesTalks last night for The Wife. One of us is Glenn Close. #thewifefilm #bookstagram #rhewifemovie
So happy and moved to have a reunion with Samantha Mathis last night at the premiere of The Wife. She starred in This Is My Life, the adaptation of my novel—the first film ever directed by the wonderful Nora Ephron—along with Julie Kavner and Gaby Hoffman. Not a lot of people saw this film, but it is a beautiful gem about mothers, daughters, careers, success, and trying to make one’s life work. I have only happy memories from when that movie got made. #bookstagram #samanthamathis
Last night with Christian Slater at the NY premiere of the movie of my novel The Wife. He is so good in this movie, no surprise. #thewifefilm #christianslater #bookstagram #contentednovelist
Last night at the LA premiere of The Wife! Sometimes being a writer isn’t all angst, fuzzy slippers and 2 pm naps. #glennclose #thewifemovie #bookstagram #gratefulnovelist
After hearing the song I was happy to see it was not a knife-sharpening truck— a.k.a. Mr. Softee for adults.
A conversation about The Wife!
So this just arrived. It’s not every day that I get to say the phrase “movie tie-in edition.” #thewifemovie #bookstagram
Farewell to the UK, and effusive gratitude to everyone at #chattoandwindus, who hosted me on book tour so wonderfully. Thanks to my indefatigable publicist @luciecuthbertsontwiggs, I now know what a “hen do” is, and so much else, which will all appear in my next novel. #TheFemalePersuasion #bookstagram
On UK book tour for #TheFemalePersuasion, and currently at the #HayFestival2018 in Wales. Here you can see the readers lining up. #chattoandwindus #bookstagram #evencowsreadfiction
I am in London on book tour, thanks to my wonderful publisher #chattoandwindus, who is plying me with books and massive quantities of fruit. #bookstagram
All novels should color coordinate with hot liquids. Thanks for the pic, @carly. #bookstagram #thefemalepersuasion #allnovelsshouldmatchliquids
Mom and us back in the day... kerchief, shades and all...
What a wonderful way to spend a Sunday: talking to a group of smart and amazing women in Toronto about those who have inspired us. Plus, eating crumpets and drinking blood orange mimosas. Thank you @kristinreads @emmaingram @penguinrandomca #excusetodrinkmimosas #bookstagram #brunchstagram #ocanada
#curtissittenfeld and I attempt to recreate our author photos after our reading last night at the 92nd St Y.
