Oregon recently joined seven states and D.C. in guaranteeing new parents the time they need to put their families first. No one should have to choose between a paycheck and caring for a loved one. Let’s keep this momentum going—because #EqualityCantWait.
Imagine what women could accomplish if they didn’t have to do...well, everything. #EqualityCantWait
It is no secret that we are a family that loves books. It's our favorite way to learn, share stories, and spend quality time with each other (Bill and I still love to read the same book on trips). Happy #BookLoversDay to everyone out there who believes in the power of stories to change the world! 📚❤️
For #WorldBreastfeedingWeek, I am nominating my friends at @aliveandthrive as my collective #breastfeedinghero. I saw Alive & Thrive’s work when I met with a group of mothers in Burkina Faso. They told me that they didn’t know about the health benefits of breastmilk and had been giving their babies water instead, thinking it would better hydrate them. Alive & Thrive began to work with the mothers, educating them on the nutritious value of breastmilk—and the custom of giving babies water has started to disappear. The babies are noticeably healthier as a result. I have met women all over the world who want to breastfeed, but don’t know how to do it—or why it’s so important. I am thankful for the work they are doing to help new mothers across the globe. Who is your #breastfeedinghero?
Of the $130 billion dollars in venture capital funding in 2018, only 2% went to women entrepreneurs, and even less went to women of color. Imagine what these founders could do—and how much the world would benefit from their ideas—if they had an equal opportunity to get funding. #EqualityCantWait
This is one of my favorite photos. When Bill, Nelson Mandela, Graça Machel, and I visited the University of Witwatersrand in 2003, we took the stage with two women, Fatima, who was HIV positive, and Eileen, who was in the late stages of AIDS. Even as late as 2003, there was still stigma around AIDS in South Africa—a reality that shocked Bill and me. Without hesitation, President Mandela stood up and put his arm around Eileen and embraced her. This is one example of his incredible leadership. His warmth and humanity came through, and that big, wide smile says it all. I admired him tremendously and am grateful to see his legacy live on through #MandelaDay.
I'm in London today to share the incredible stories of the women who inspired me to write The #MomentofLift!
Here’s to you, @Malala! I hope your day is filled with joy and inspiration. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to helping women and girls around the world. #MalalaDay
If you have room on your #summerreading list, I recommend this marvelous book: The Wet Engine: Exploring the Mad Wild Miracle of the Heart, by Brian Doyle. It's the very best kind of summer reading: moving, thought-provoking, and beautiful.
For me, summer means time with family—time to recharge my batteries and get outdoors in the sun. What’s your favorite thing to do in the summer?
Throwback to a July 4th from many years ago! Hope your Fourth is filled with family, friends, and relaxation. #TBT
In honor of today's match, I'm throwing it back to my own soccer days (and Farrah Fawcett hair). Good luck, @USWNT! #FlashbackFriday #fbf
Over the next few weeks, I’ll be highlighting some of the reasons why #EqualityCantWait. The first? American women spend an average of about 4 hours a day doing unpaid work like chores and childcare; men spend an average of 2.5 hours a day.
Happy #FathersDay to my father, who taught me the importance of equality early on; to the best father-in-law I could have imagined; and, of course, to @thisisbillgates—a supportive husband and a fabulous father to Jenn, Rory, and Phoebe. ❤
As a young girl, Sister Sudha knew her calling was to work with the poor. Her faith taught her to go to the people on the margins, so after she became a nun, she began working to improve the lives of women and girls from one of India’s lowest castes—the Musahar. The Musahar, directly translated as “rat eaters,” are some of the poorest people in India. Today, Sudha runs a free school that teaches girls lessons in everything from reading to karate. Most importantly, she teaches her students to look at themselves differently—to gain self-confidence, to develop their gifts, to defend their own rights. Sudha is one of the most inspiring people I've had the honor of meeting, and I share her story with you in my book, The #MomentofLift.
Had a great conversation with Jack Ma and @antonioguterres today for the @unitednations high-level panel on digital cooperation. We can make sure the next wave of digital technology helps remove barriers to equality rather than further entrenching them—but it's going to take all of us, working together.
What an amazing week at #WD2019. I was so inspired by the passion, purpose, and optimism I saw in the people there whose work is centered around improving the world for women and girls every day. I'm standing alongside you in this fight—and together, we're going to deliver for the world’s women and girls. Equality can’t wait.
It was an honor to meet President Sahle-Work Zewde, the first female President of Ethiopia and an unflinching champion of gender equality.
If we want to use digital technology to close gender gaps, women MUST be part of building and designing it. What a phenomenal conversation with @shivsiroya, @roya.mahboob_ and Judith Spitz. And thanks to Nick Oketch for showing us how it can be done. #WD2019
Pastor David Opoti Inzofu grew up believing that family planning was a population-control conspiracy. Today, that's exactly the kind of myth he uses his pulpit to help dismantle. In his sermons, he educates his congregation about the benefits of timing and spacing pregnancies and explains why he believes the bible teaches that families should have only as many children as they can care for. I share more about Pastor David's life and how he's inspired me in my book, The #MomentofLift—a collection of stories about people I've met who are dedicating their lives to lifting up others.
Throughout my book tour, we asked people how they’ll commit to the lift. Here are some of my favorite responses. Now, it’s your turn: How will you commit to the lift? #MomentofLift
@MandyMooreMM and I had so much fun visiting the young women at @_girlsgarage in Berkeley, California! Their innovative space allows girls to express their creativity through building and inventing. They use jigsaws, fuse metal, screen print posters, and more—all in support of causes they believe in. Girls Garage is proof that when a girl has the right support and resources, there's no limit to what she can do. Plus, they've got one of my all-time favorite mottos: "Fear less. Build more." Yes! Visit the link in my bio to learn what Emily and Girls Garage are doing to summon moments of lift for girls.
Last year, I received the loveliest video message from a classroom at @SolarSTEAMgirls in Dallas. These young girls—and their outstanding teachers—commit to the lift every day by building each other up, learning STEM skills, and honoring, as they put it, ”fierce females.” I got a chance to visit them when I was in Dallas, and the experience blew me away. I’m so excited to see all that these young leaders go on to accomplish. #MomentofLift
Happy #MothersDay to my mom and to all of the moms doing some of the hardest and most rewarding work out there. Treasure every moment—it goes by fast!
#TBT to taking a trip down memory lane. Earlier this year, @thisisbillgates and I visited the buildings where we worked on the Microsoft campus and the spot where he first asked me out—“for two weeks from Friday.” 🤦♀️ Thankfully, he’s gotten a little more spontaneous over the years. ❤️
Feeling energized after a fantastic #MomentofLift conversation with @MandyMooremm. We talked about tackling perfectionism (I'm hard on myself for being hard on myself! 😂) and letting go of fear.
My high school math teacher Mrs. Bauer was a mentor and a guiding light in my life. Which teacher had the biggest impact on you? #TeacherAppreciationDay #ThankATeacher #MomentofLift
Here’s an exciting fact about Chicago: It has the highest percentage of female-founded startups in the world. When I was there last week, I stopped by @1871chicago, a center for tech and entrepreneurship, to meet some of these female founders and hear about their experiences. We talked about the businesses they’ve started, the problems they’re passionate about solving, and their plans for the future. We also talked about the challenges they’ve faced navigating a startup world that tends to be more “user-friendly” for men than women—and why they think getting more women into positions of power will help. I loved hearing about their plans to bring other women along with them. As Eileen Murphy Buckley, founder and CEO of ThinkCERCA, put it, it’s important to “lift as you climb.”
A high school throwback, in honor of my trip home to Dallas. What do we think of going back to this hairstyle? 😂 #flashbackfriday
Nothing's better than meeting up with an old friend. ❤️ Patty was the founding CEO of @gatesfoundation, back when it was a one-room office above a pizza parlor. Loved catching up with her at the #MomentofLift event and sharing stories from the early days. #tbt
That moment when you find out your book made it on the @nytimes best sellers list! 🙌❤️ #MomentofLift #EqualityCantWait
The majority of the world’s poorest people are farmers. To help them fight poverty, we need to invest not only in better seeds but also in the potential of the women who plant them. In practice, that looks like an innovative program I saw in Malawi, which helps farmers like Patricia improve their harvests – and also gain more equality in their marriages. Visit the link in my bio to learn more about how I learned to see agriculture (and everything else) as a gender issue. #MomentofLift
Join me in supporting a local bookstore by picking up a new read (or two, or three). Here’s what I chose at Chicago’s 57th Street Books. #independentbookstoreday
In honor of today’s book tour stop with Dr. Helene Gayle, here’s a throwback with Helene and @cturlington! Looking forward to our conversation in Chicago! #MomentofLift
What an amazing night! Thank you to everyone who came out to @symphonyspace and to my dear friend—the incredible and talented @brenebrown—for joining me to kick off my tour for The #MomentofLift.
Grateful for an amazing pub day and for all of the love and support. I’m so excited to finally be able to share The Moment of Lift with all of you. #MomentofLift
All three of my children are fully vaccinated. Vaccines work. And when fewer people decide to get them, we all become more vulnerable to disease. As World Immunization Week approaches, let’s listen to science, have honest conversations with each other, and act to protect our children. #VaccinesWork
There are concrete actions we all can take in our day-to-day lives to make real progress towards gender equality. I commit to using my voice to champion equality and the women and men who are working to bring it closer. How will you commit to the lift? Share with #MomentofLift.
For almost 20 years, these three women have been a constant presence in my life—a source of comfort, support, and encouragement. On our weekly walks, we cover everything under the sun, from marriage to children to our personal challenges. So when I was finishing up my book, The Moment of Lift, I knew they’d be the first to read it. Thank you for giving me honest and helpful feedback, as always. #TBT #MomentofLift
Dallas holds a special place in my heart—but yesterday’s visit was especially memorable. Thank you, President @GeorgeWBush and @LauraWBush, for welcoming us at @TheBushCenter’s #ForumonLeadership. The leadership you’ve shown on global health has helped deliver lifesaving treatments to millions around the world.
Visit GatesNotes.com for a preview of my new book, The Moment of Lift. In this excerpt, I write about my dear friend and mentor Hans Rosling. #MomentofLift
I am excited to announce that my next #MomentofLift moderator is a singer, husband, father, and activist who I admire so much. Join me and @johnlegend in Los Angeles on May 7! Tap the link in my bio or visit momentoflift.com to learn more.
