The best moments of my life have been the ones that were in balance. Climbing and gardening. Family and work. Friends and solo time. This weekend I got to spend the most heart enriching time with my fellow @be_luminary @ambervalentiarmstrong. She always helps me bring the things that are most important into focus, thank you for that my friend. Here is to finding some balance in the chaos coming in the next few weeks...#alwaysforward #balance

Texture filled land and sky. I love the little surprises in nature’s symmetry. I also love cinnamon bears. The two are unrelated but both are on my mind 🤷‍♀️. #alwaysforward

This summer has been a whirlwind of mountain adventures so far....it started in Nepal, a quick hop over to France and then a full July of Cascades climbing. I’m getting ready to head out on my last guided trip this summer and it’s got me thinking of all it takes to make this life work. It is a puzzle that I work hard to solve because I love my job and my time in the mountains AND I love my family and community and quality time spent with them. My husband @tyler__reid is the very most important puzzle piece. He makes so much of this dream possible by supporting me while I’m home and while I’m away- and the village we get to call home fills in all the gaps. We are lucky indeed. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• While my guiding season comes to an end I’m moving into the final planning stages of a mega #sufferfun adventure with @mountain.maddie . We love a good challenge and this will be one for sure- more to come on that very soon but for now I need to study those maps and pack my @eddiebauer Butter pack with all the stuff and things for a real challenge! ✨ #whyihike #gratitude

Sometimes a climbing trip looks like this-15 hours of rainy tent time. It’s not all sunrises and alpine views but there is a certain gift in the uncertainty of what you will get. #alwaysforward #whyihike @jpargi @elizibex @pacificalpineguides @be_luminary

Walking towards the sun is pretty motivating on a cold and beautiful alpine morning. It’s days like this that make me so thankful that it’s my job to share the mountains with others. It’s work, but it’s worth it every time. @pacificalpineguides @mountain.maddie #alwaysforward #whyihike

melissaarnot

Sometimes, with the right amount of toil and silence, you can hear the sunrise speak. Yesterday was one of those days. This mountain has been the most transformative place in my own life and it was such an honor to climb it with a group of people who raised the vital funds that allow @thejuniperfund to support and help Nepali families transform their own lives after tragedy. I will never get tired of this view and I couldn’t be more grateful for the chance to share the mountains with others in this way. #thejuniperfund #gratitude

melissaarnot

Some days you get no sleep, walk a little fast and thread the needle of storms to get a perfect summit sunrise. Today was one of those days and I’m eternally grateful for the company and the luck to work in these beautiful mountains. @pacificalpineguides @richiealtig @andyaltig #alwaysforward #whyihike

Climbing through the night is an exercise in keeping your head up while not looking too far ahead, much like most of life. The step that is right in front of you requires the most attention but it is helpful to know where you are going so you don’t focus too much on the uphill parts. #alwaysforward @pacificalpineguides

melissaarnot

Some days you have to find the summit somewhere in the clouds. Some days you accidentally walk a little past your camp because you can’t see a thing above or below you. But on those same days, sometimes the clouds clear and you find yourself next to a good friend on a beautiful glacier and everything is right in the world. Pretty grateful for one of those days with a solid crew. #alwaysforward #whyihike @eddiebauer @lekiusa @pacificalpineguides

Just a casual walk to the summit of Kulshan/Baker with the most excited group of people- in a full on winter white out. Happy first day of summer... or something like it. @alanpdavis @pacificalpineguides #whyihike ?

melissaarnot

This was a short 3 days ago, high on Kulshan/Baker as the nearly full moon set behind the nearby rocky ridge. I made a quick trip home, washed my socks and now it’s time to head back up! I love this time of year and I love the adventure that is my job- ✨☀️AND how lucky to get to sneak in a Solstice climb ☀️✨. #whyihike @pacificalpineguides

melissaarnot

The best adventures are the ones we share. I couldn’t have been more psyched to share the beautiful mountain air this weekend with two of my favorites @adrienneschaefer and @mandymooremm. The adventure wasn’t fully what we planned but it was exactly what we needed. I hope all of my future days in the mountains are as fulfilling as this one. #whyihike #liveyouradventure @pacificalpineguides

I tend to think that the thing right in front of us, the thing we can see, is never the thing we should worry about most. The mountains have taught me this. Live your life as though the solid ground you walk on is actually layers of precariously balanced frozen ice. Walk gently, but keep moving. #alwaysforward #microsoftambassador #whyihike @eddiebauer 📸 @jongriffithphotography (seriously one of the hardest working and most talented photographers in the game, give him a follow) • @mandymooremm you ready for a little of this?! ✨🏔✨

A wide smile can ease a whole heap of stress. Fun is the antidote to failure. You will learn more out on the side of a mountain than from a book, but read it anyway. Choose your life, your thoughts and your dreams with the care you use to select produce for ripeness- but be prepared to use that fruit what it’s ripe. The journey to the thing is always more then the thing. #lessonslearned @eddiebauer @microsoft #whyihike #microsoftambassador 📸 @jongriffithphotography

✨ Up high in the alpine, on a windless night, the sight of two girls trying to grow and learn looked a little something like this. Unexpected but beautiful. Painful in all the good ways. The signs of growth spoke like the crunch of crampons on a glacier mixed with the exhale when you get to stop planning and start doing. Tears of frustration and challenge turned into the silent stoicism that growing bestows on us. You don’t have to ever set foot in the mountains to know what I’m talking about- we have all felt it. That moment when we step into a growth accelerating vortex that spins us around, makes us nauseous and somehow pops us out the other side feeling satisfied and more rooted and sure of who and where we are. That is the thing about climbing and growing- sometimes you have to venture out onto the least secure footing for a moment to feel more stable the rest of the time. I’m endlessly grateful to these girls for trusting the process and letting me be the bright headlamp on the back of their rope. I have learned so much...more to come on their story soon, but for now, just gratitude. 📸 @jongriffithphotography #microsoftambassador #whyihike #alwaysforward @eddiebauer @microsoft

I have traveled across too many time zones and back again in the last two days but it all feels worth it to be in a place I love so much. Walking beneath these giants has a way of stripping away the distractions of daily life and quieting my deepest inner mind (the one that stays so busy most of the time). It puts the parts of life that matter most into their proper perspective and that is #whyihike. I will keep returning to the high mountains, near and far, as long as I have questions to answer that only the stillness of walking a dusty trail surrounded by the wisdom of the high peaks seems to satisfy. The only thing better than being in these mountains is sharing it with others- thank you @mandymooremm @streicherhair @chaseweideman @thejendaltonshow @julesapse @sherpatseringdolker @pasangdiki_ @stsheringdorjee @starfire_reid for showing up, bringing curiosity and letting the silence answer the questions that words never could. This is an appreciation/gratitude post. I have been fortunate to be inspired by many people over many years. When I first started climbing I would watch @bethrodden climbing The Optimist again and again to remind me that even elite people had to fight to achieve dreams. I have been surrounded by peers finding-and blazing- their own paths, much to my inspiration. And I have people in my life who will fly to Nepal with 3 days notice just to help make sure my adventures are what I want them to be (thanks @starfire_reid). This is just a post of appreciation and gratitude for all the hidden parts that make this life so meaningful and so possible. #alwaysforward #liveyouradventure

melissaarnot

Back home after a burst of adventure and I can’t help but reflect on motivations- why I do this. For me, being in nature is a chance to root into my true self. It is letting go of the things that don’t matter and shining a light on the ones that do. There are so many moments in life that I spend trying to figure out how I’m fitting in/if I’m doing it right. But in nature I never feel that way. I always return from a trip with a little more clarity on where I want to go next and the layer I want to shed or add to get there. But most importantly, it opens my eyes a little wider and reminds me that the world is 360 degrees and I have to look *and be* up/down/around and in it to experience it best. #whyihike #alwaysforward @eddiebauer @lekiusa

Being in the mountains has a way of expanding your heart and soul in all of the best ways. Traveling across, over, down and through the landscape in New Zealand has been pretty amazing (as you can see). From lush rainforests to wind scoured high alpine, we really have seen it all, but what I value most is the gentle way of letting your soul get to know the change of directions and the curve of the landscape as you soak it all in. Getting to share the experience with this group as they challenge the boundaries of their own comfort zones has been such an amazing reminder of why I love sharing the mountains with others. #alwaysforward #whyihike #liveyouradventure @eddiebauer

Happy birthday to the brightest light in my life. I never imagined a peace like this, a strength like this. I have been spending a lot of time working in the garden lately and it really has me thinking about the last year of growing a little baby into a little girl. Mamas are kind of like the plants in the garden and our babies are the roots. For the roots to be strongest it’s best if the plant doesn’t bloom for bit, but she always maintains the potential to bloom. And with deep roots the blooms are more beautiful than ever before. That’s how I like to think of it anyway. To all you mamas out there- know that your roots are strong and your blooms are always ready. #alwaysforward #firstbirthday

Nature wrote this book, we are just characters...and not even the main characters. The more miles I walk in the mountains, the more I get to know myself. The more I get to know myself the better I understand the world around me. And each minute I get more mystified by how nature controls it all. The deepest bonds I have come from time spent in the mountains. The greatest losses I have felt have come from the same mountains. It doesn’t all have to be wonderful for me to appreciate the depths of what nature is trying to teach. I’m just grateful I stumbled into this classroom. #alwaysforward #liveyouradventure #whyihike @eddiebauer @lekiusa

✨ I have made a huge part of my life about sharing the mountains with others- it’s one of the main reasons why I hike. When I met @mandymooremm last winter I knew she was special and I knew our shared love of adventure would open the door to some amazing things. I can’t wait to kick it all off as we head to New Zealand and then Nepal to experience the mountains, culture and adventure that we both love so much. Thanks for being so trusting and so present Mandy- we have many hills to climb and I’m so excited to do it together! ✨ #whyihike #liveyouradventure @eddiebauer

Some part of each day is spent being thankful that the crazy twists and turns of life that landed us together. You are the best adventure buddy, listener and dad I have ever known. You showed me how to love skiing. You taught me the importance of silly time and all the while you have patience and love for being with (difficult at times) me. I know our adventure is just starting and I’m so excited for the unknown. As I get ready for a full season of mountain adventures I can’t help but feel grateful for my mentees and all they teach me. Being a mentor is an ever growing part of how I choose to spend my time in the mountains. Mentorship only really works if both sides are invested and willing to ride the rollercoaster. Generosity is one of my values and I try to express it in whatever form is available to me. In my mind, the perfect equation is to give to a point that you won’t remember how much you gave after a year has passed, but the person receiving it will always remember. That’s what mountains do for me...I don’t think they notice much what they give to me, but it’s something I will never forget. #alwaysforward #liveyouradventure #whyihike @eddiebauer @lekiusa

Our motivations for ‘why’ we do things are often very personal. I’ve been thinking about the why a lot lately. I have always said if you have to ask me why I do this, you likely won’t understand the answer. But the truth is more simple- I do it because it fulfills my heart in a way that nothing else does. Pushing myself in the mountains and exploring are purely selfish- but they make me a better person in all the moments I’m not doing them. Those moments in the mountains teach me things I haven’t been able to learn any other way. I keep seeing an ever-more-common thing happening where people are climbing ‘for’ something specific or justifying their passion wrapped up in a cause. Don’t get me wrong-some are just using the attention of pursuing big things for something that is meaningful to them, and that’s admirable and deserves respect. Others use a cause to help motivate them to do something they otherwise wouldn’t do. But I have to say, I want to hold a space where it is ok to do what you love because you love it and that’s it. Leave the places you go a little better and try to learn from this beautiful world and maybe that can be enough. Because if we can’t pursue love for love alone then I think we lose something really important in the experience. #alwaysforward

Mountains teach us how to be leaders and followers. They teach us how to hurt and how to love. And they never ask for anything in return for all the gifts we get. So all we can do is decorate them with wonder and spectate them with respect and leave every encounter we have with a heart that is more full and a space that is more sacred. #alwaysforward #liveyouradventure

Not all the days need to be sunny for you to find joy in them. There is something necessarily reductive about walking in a whiteout- you can only see what’s right in front of you but you must always know where you are to end up getting anywhere. I enjoy that. There is value in feeling insignificant along side nature. There is value in carrying all your things on your back, especially when it weighs more than you do. There is value in pursuing things that make your heart feel alive. But to chase dreams rooted in your *own* values- that has the most value of all. If I could give my younger self a piece of advice it would be to identify my values early and get comfortable living a life moving towards them. But since I can’t go back in time I will just tell you all instead ✨. #alwaysforward #liveyouradventure 📷 @tyler__reid from a lonely day on Everest, 2016

Mentorship is such a funny thing. It is a deep connection and a deep care that seeps into every part of your life. @mountain.maddie is my original mentee and the relationship started with me holding her up. After more than 6 years, over a thousand trail miles and countless hours in the car I can say she holds me up too. She is gentle, thoughtful, and one of the best leaders I’ve gotten to be around. I’ve been working on loosening up my ‘all or nothing’ mindset. At my @be_luminary retreat last spring Cara and Amber brought me the idea that everything counts. Even small things. You don’t have to run 15 miles to go for a run. You don’t have to ski for the whole day to go for a ski. In my ever changing balance of working, mom-ing, wife-ing, friend-ing and life-ing this idea has been really helpful. A short walk up/ski down the hill behind my house with my family right into getting to have coffee with a good friend was just the “everything counts” I needed today. 📷 @tyler__reid @sid_pattison #alwaysforward #smallthingsareallthings

I have a little rule for myself that I’m only allowed to complain about things if I’m also willing to do something about them. There is no doubt that all the years of training/guiding/climbing have been tough on my body but the crazy thing is that the times I feel the most uncomfortable are the times I am not doing much training. My back gets tight and my knees start to hurt-and I’m feeling it now because of so much travel and lack of consistency with my training...so sometimes the only solution is a snowy morning hill run (yes, in my down jacket!).... instantly I feel better. #alwaysforward #liveyouradventure @eddiebauer
