When our founder, Clifford W. Beers, started his #mentalhealth movement at the turn of the century, he responded to critics who suggested he do it anonymously with, "I must fight in the open." Over 100 years later, his legacy still guides the way as we continue advance prevention for all; early identification and intervention for those at risk; integrated care, services, and supports for those who need them; with #recovery as the goal.⠀ ⠀ Will you #fightintheopen for #mentalhealth like Clifford?⠀ ⠀ Tap 👆 the photo to #ShopB4Stage4!
In our latest "In The Open" episode, we take on the topic of differentiating between a person who has bipolar or just being moody. The episode discusses two important factors which is mania and euphoria and they break down what each mood might look or feel like. If you think you may have a problem you should talk to a professional to figure out what your next steps might be and seek help as early as possible.⠀ ⠀ @mentalhealthamerica's "In The Open" podcast is available on iTunes, Spotify, Google Play, Stitcher, and Podbean. Mental health conditions - at any stage - are important to address. It is imperative that we embrace earlier identification and intervention, and integration of services, to prevent homelessness, incarceration, and disability among people with mental health concerns. To change trajectories of lives for the better, we need to do these things as soon as we can.
Wanting to help your friends so they don't have to struggle the same way you did is a mood. 😤 While what worked for you might not work for them, you can still help. Use your experience to help them find supports. It can be a big step forward for those starting their journey.
You are more than what you feel right now.
You wouldn't wait until you had Stage 4 cancer to take care of your physical health, would you? No - you would start at Stage 1, with education, prevention, and early intervention. That is the #B4Stage4 Philosophy.
Screening and prevention shouldn't only apply to cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Screening and prevention is key to help us maintain our #mentalhealth.
There are many ways you can help someone with a mental illness navigate the treatment system and work towards recovery. As in any relationship, emotional and practical support is always needed. Occasionally, family and friends participate in someone's recovery by offering transportation, financial and housing assistance. Whatever form it takes, your support, compassion and respect matter.
We said what we said. 😤 We have come a long way in bending the public perception of mental health through a century of advocacy, education, and awareness, but we still have a long way to go. Mental health conditions must be treated like any other chronic health conditions - starting with prevention, education, early identification and intervention - before a crisis. Before Stage 4.
There is no one else exactly like you in this world, and that makes you incredibly special. Embrace who you are, and remember to love who you are. ✨⠀ ⠀ #fridaymood #motivationalquotes #inspirationalquotes #tgif
In many ways, specific communities (oftentimes referred to as marginalized, people of color, minority) are seen as victims or broken. As a community, they must constantly work towards combating those stereotypes to maintain wellbeing. ⠀ 💚⠀ This year, we want to understand how these intersections and struggles impact the mental health of these communities. We want to challenge those perceptions and highlight the depth of one’s identity beyond what is seen or what others believe to be true – and how many thrive despite the mental health challenges thrown their way.⠀ 💚⠀ To create the space for conversation around these issues, we ask you to share the depth of your identity and how it relates to your mental health journey using #DepthOfMyIdentity.⠀ 💚⠀ Help us and others understand your lived experience and how we can all do better to address stereotypes, negative preconceptions, and bias to improve our overall mental health. ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mentalillness #minoritymentalhealth #minoritymentalhealthmonth #mmhm19

Much of our work is guided by the #B4Stage4 philosophy – that mental health conditions should be treated long before they reach the most critical points in the disease process. ⠀ ⠀ When we think about diseases like cancer or heart disease, we don’t wait years to treat them. We start before Stage 4—we begin with prevention, identify symptoms, and develop a plan of action to reverse and hopefully stop the progression of the disease. ⠀ ⠀ So, why don’t we do the same for individuals who are dealing with potentially serious mental illness? Like other diseases, we need to address these symptoms early, identify the underlying disease, and plan an appropriate course of action on a path towards overall health. ⠀ ⠀ MHA is committed to addressing mental health #B4Stage4. Are you?⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mentalillness #b4stage4 #4mind4body #health #fightintheopen
Each June, #PrideMonth events are held around the country to celebrate the #LGBTQIA community. 2019’s Pride Month is particularly special, as this June is the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, a series of incidents started by trans women of color that sparked a new wave of LGBTQIA+ rights activism. ⠀ ⠀ A 2018 study found that adults identifying as LGBTQIA+ who also had a diagnosed #mentalhealth disorder benefited from peer intervention. A few said it didn’t feel like a “session,” but like sitting down with a friend. Many participants felt less isolated and strengthened their social networks after having the opportunity to discuss their sexuality and gender with someone understanding.
Mark your calendars! 📅✏️ @mentalhealthamerica's 2020 Annual Conference: "From Resiliency To Recovery" is scheduled for June 11-13, 2020. ⠀ ⠀ Interested in speaking? Keep an eye 👀 out for our call for proposals later this year! #MHACONF20
People struggling with an eating disorder often become obsessed with food, body image and/or weight. These disorders can be life-threatening if not recognized and treated appropriately. For many men, eating disorders can go undiagnosed as they are typically thought of as a condition that mostly affects women. The earlier a person receives treatment, the greater the likelihood of full recovery. #MensHealthMonth
It's important to know that, while difficult, recovery is worth it. Many people affirm that their journey to recovery has not been a straight, steady road. Rather there are ups and downs, new discoveries and setbacks. Over time, it is possible to look back and see, despite the halting progress and discouragements, how far we have really come. #MensHealthMonth

Thank you for reminding us that #recovery is not a straight, steady road, but it’s worth it. | 📷: @samdylanfinch ・・・ I haven’t shared this incredible photo by @tristancrane for @here_portraits until now. Truthfully, there was something about having my stomach this visible that scared the hell out of me. But when I look at this photo now, I see something else — a really beautiful person trying to find his way in a world that so often tried to clip his wings. 🦋 Recovery is hard. Having your body change is about so much more than aesthetics — it’s a daily reminder of how much the universe demands that we surrender. We don’t know what will happen, except that one day, this all ends, and even that is shaky and unclear. It reminds us of how much we long to be loved and accepted, and how helpless we feel when we offer up our hearts to someone else. 🦋 Our bodies changing is a reminder that nothing stays the same, which is perhaps the scariest thing of all — to know all of the ways in which we are both powerful and powerless, exquisite and afraid. In this cluster of contradictions, it makes sense to me that we would try whatever we could to cling to what we know, even if it hurts us, numbs us, or simply removes us. 🦋 Being alive is scary. There is no pretending otherwise. But it’s exactly for that reason that I choose recovery, because all that I am guaranteed is the moment I occupy right at this very second. It’s all that I have. And I choose to bloom. I choose to open. I choose to receive whatever small miracles come about when I am no longer diminishing the vessel with which I receive and experience them. 🦋 And this photo reminds me that staying in a cocoon of my own design will deny me an entire world of possibility, ones I can’t imagine, even now. I will take the risk. Because that’s what it means to be alive in this strange unknown — we trade what little we know because we trust that something beautiful might find us if we do. 🦋 In my experience, given the time, it always does. . . . . . #eatingdisorderrecovery #bodypositivity #riotsnotdiets #healthateverysize #ftm #transgender #trans #transman #genderqueer #femme #queer #gaymenofinstagram #gayboy #lgbt #lgbt
