Aoraki Mt. Cook, seen here on the far left of the first and fourth image, with the Tasman Glacier in the foreground, is the tallest peak in the southern alps of New Zealand. At 3,724 meters (12,218 feet) and with three separate summits it is a serious challenge for any mountaineer. It is also the peak that Sir Edmund Hillary used to train for his Everest climb before making the first ascent of Everest on May 29, 1953 with Tenzing Norgay. It is quite difficult to do Aoraki justice with a camera. This national park is one of the most impressive I have ever seen. #newzealand #aoraki #mtcook #tasmanglacier

A Pipeline motion blur. After spending the entire day capturing the action at Pipe a few years ago I tried out some motion blur images. As usual, you rattle off a few hundred frames before you get something that works. This might be the most soulful surfing image I’ve ever captured. #pipeline #hawaii #oahu #northshore #bigwavesurfing

A few of the B-Side images from New Zealand. The first Image is of #thatwanakatree in Wanaka on the South Island. For this image I left the shutter open for a longer period to get some star trails above the tree and I light painted the tree with a flashlight in the middle of the night. For the second image, this is another shot of Aoraki Mt. Cook, the tallest mountain in New Zealand, with the Milky Way above the peak. Both were captured using the @fujifilm_global GFX 100. #newzealand #wanaka #aorakimountcook #gfx100 #fujifilmgfx100 @fujifilm_northamerica @fujifilmx_us

It never gets old seeing your work get used in National and International ad campaigns for massive companies like this image that @fujifilm_global used to promote the FUJIFILM GFX 100. And this image would not exist without the stellar crew we had on this shoot including @sav.cummins (the climber in this image), @angela_vanwiemeersch and @tedhesser Caption: Savannah Cummins climbing Go Sparky go (5.11) in Indian Creek, Utah. @fujifilm_northamerica @fujifilmx_us #fujifilmgfx100 #gfx100

Photos from @nasa | On this day, 50 years ago, we humans landed on the moon on July 20, 1969. It was only in 1903 that the Wright brothers flew a plane at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. It is hard to believe that it only took 66 years to go from the first human flight to the first humans landing on the moon. Now, 50 years later #nasa is looking to head back to the moon and onwards to Mars. Space travel is hard. As much as folks would like to think about how romantic it would be to colonize another planet and live there, what most if not all of the astronauts realized on the lunar missions was just how unique and precious our own home planet really was. The power of imagery has never had an impact quite like these first images from Apollo 11. These images jumpstarted the environmental movement in the early seventies. Looking back at Earth, the Apollo astronauts, who were floating in their own spacecraft, realized the Earth was just a much larger spacecraft floating in the Universe. We do need to explore the Universe but the best gift from going to the moon is the realization of what we have here in Earth. Onward to Mars! #apollo #apollo11 #moonlanding #earthfromthemoon #lunarlanding

High winds, steep mountains and massive glaciers deep in the Rees Valley beyond Glenorchy, New Zealand. This one just felt better in black and white since there was little color to speak of in the original color file anyway. Part of the Lord of the Rings was filmed back in this valley and it isn’t hard to see why—absolutely stunning. This image is part of a massive panorama captured with the @fujifilm_global GFX 100. #glenorchy #reesvalley #newzealand @fujifilmusa_ @fujifilm_northamerica #fujifilmgfx100 #gfx100

Cecil Peak looming above Queenstown on the South Island of New Zealand. I love it when clouds form below the top of a peak. While staying with @mikelangford_qccp and @jackieranken I woke up on this morning and saw the incredible view out the window, then scrambled to get my camera and tripod. The view from their balcony is pretty phenomenal. This image is a six image panorama put together in @lightroom from the @fujifilm_global GFX 100 and is a huge image file. The hospitality in New Zealand was amazing. After speaking at the @nzipp_national photography conference in Wellington, I spent another week on the South Island cruising around and was well taken care of. In particular @andywoods57 set up a great flight over to Milford Sound for me which allowed me to see it as clouds and a big storm moved in the next day. My thanks to Jackie, Mike, Andy and everyone for the incredible hospitality. I will definitely have to come back to New Zealand for more adventures! #mtwalker #newzealand #queenstown

Frost on the trees at Kelland Pond just south of Twizel, New Zealand on the South Island. While driving up to Aoraki Mt. Cook I saw these frozen ghost trees on the side of the road and with more exploration found the pond as well. There were endless cool photo opportunities in this area. The pond was generating its own cloud and the freezing temperatures allowed for the frozen landscape you see here. #twizel #kellandpond #newzealand @fujifilmx_us @fujifilm_northamerica #gfx100 #fujifilmgfx100

#thatwanakatree at 2 AM. While visiting New Zealand recently I tried to stay away from the “tourist” photo spots but it was hard with the Wanaka tree. My hotel was literally a few hundred meters away so I thought let’s go out at 2 AM and do some light painting. And, well, no one is out there at 2 AM in winter freezing their nads off so it wasn’t a bad choice. Long exposure, tripod and a powerful flashlight came together here for an interesting pic. #wanaka #newzealand #lakewanaka @fujifilmusa_ @fujifilm_northamerica #fujifilmgfx100

Another image of Mt. Cook (also known as Aoraki) at sunset in the southern alps of New Zealand. From bottom to top the vertical rise of the peak as seen here is a height of over 10,000-feet (3,048-meters) which is in large part why this peak and the surrounding peaks are so impressive. #mtcook #aoraki #newzealand #fujifilm #fujifilmgfx100

Mt. Cook (also known as Aoraki) under the Milky Way, seen here from Kea Point, is the tallest peak in the southern alps of New Zealand. At 3,724 meters (12,218 feet) and with three separate summits it is a serious challenge for any mountaineer. It is also the peak that Sir Edmund Hillary used to train for Everest. I spent two days at Mount Cook with spectacular weather and clear skies. Having traveled far and wide and having visited many of the great mountain ranges of the world I have to say Aoraki is mighty impressive. Getting a Milky Way image above Mt. Cook was also a treat—even though I planned it that way with the #SkySafari app. #mtcook #aoraki #newzealand #keapoint

Mount Aspiring (also named Tititea by the Māori) at sunset rising above Lake Wanaka on the South Island of New Zealand. I must say the southern alps here in New Zealand are absolutely stunning. The flight from Wellington to Queenstown a few days ago on a crystal clear day was one of the most beautiful flights I have ever been on with the entire range laid out below us. While this image doesn’t convey the endless mountain-scape the color of the light at sunset was a wild purple glow. Three-storied pagoda at Nachi Falls near Nachi, Japan. While researching things to do near Kyoto and Osaka we stumbled upon Nachi Falls and rented a car to make the trip out. This is a stunning landscape and also afforded us the time to explore some more rural areas of Japan a few weeks ago. It was great to get out of the city and drive in some truly tiny curvy roads through tea fields and small towns. #nachifalls #threestorypagoda #japan #fujifilm #xpro2 @fujifilmglobal @fujifilmx_us @fujifilm_northamerica

Savannah Cummins (@sav.cummins) on Go Sparky Go (5.11) in Indian Creek, Utah—captured with the FUJIFILM GFX 100. I am packing up today for a trip to New Zealand to speak at the @nzipp_national conference and the GFX 100 is coming along. Even though I have used the camera quite a bit already for the above assignment and in a variety of scenarios I am still getting to know it and continue to find new features. Capturing dramatic landscapes in New Zealand after the conference will be seriously fun, especially since this is my first trip to NZ. @carsonstorch launching off a jump in Virgin, Utah. Carson and Dusty launched off this jump over and over perfecting certain tricks and also running through a variety of maneuvers. All the time I was blasting away at 5 FPS with the FUJIFILM GFX 100 capturing a dozen or more 102 MP images with each jump. This image with him upside down just seems so improbable that it resonates. My sincere thanks to Carson and @dustywygle who both worked tirelessly to help realize these images and to @davegardnercreative for assisting me on this portion of the assignment. Once a decade or so the purple flowers bloom in Indian Creek, Utah in the spring and create a magical contrast with the ochre rock walls looming above. On the FUJIFILM GFX 100 assignment when I first rolled into the Creek this was the flowery vista. I have only ever seen this happen once before twenty years ago. Of course this was a great test for the GFX 100 to see just how well it could hold sharpness with such a wide depth of field. It did exceptionally well and rendered the colors quite faithfully. Twenty years ago I captured a similar image using Fuji Velvia film so this recent move is a fitting return to Fujifilm products. Indian Creek is a big reason I moved to the southwest—it is one of the most amazing crack climbing areas anywhere in the world and kicks my ass every time I go there. #gfx100 @fujifilmglobal @fujifilmx_us @fujifilm_northamerica

Japan is a fascinating and amazing country. The honor and respect shown to everyone is unparalleled in my travels. Here are a smattering of images from my recent vacation after the FUJIFILM GFX 100 launch a few weeks ago: (1) The Daihi Temple in Senkō-ji is a Zen temple on an Arashiyama mountainside just outside of Kyoto, Japan. (2) A Bhuddist Temple near the Tenman Shrine in Yoshino National Park near Nara, Japan. (3-4) A steep staircase from the Kimpusen-ji temple that leads down to the Noten-okami temple in Yoshino National Park near Nara, Japan. After the launch of the FUJIFILM GFX 100 a few weeks ago @katherineelainemast and I traveled around Japan for a little vacation time. I haven’t actually taken many “vacations” over the last 23 years as I am constantly working but after four months of intense back-to-back assignments it was time. @fujifilmx_us provided me with a super cool travel camera to lighten my load and make it a true vacation—that being the X Pro-2 and a few tiny lenses. It took some getting used to but the X Pro-2 is a joy to work with and the image quality was exceptional. We traveled around Kyoto and the Nara region and of course went to a few of the highly touristed spots like that seen here: the Fushimi Inari Taisha near Kyoto, Japan. While there are thousands of people wondering through the shrine each day if you are patient there still moments where you can capture the shrine sans people. @fujifilmglobal @fujifilm_northamerica #xpro2 #japan #kyoto #fushimiinari

Savannah Cummins (@sav.cummins) on the classic route Anunnaki (5.11+) in Indian Creek, Utah. Annunaki is a super classic route in Indian Creek and one that I photographed a decade earlier before any really even knew about it. Another image from the FUJIFILM GFX 100 assignment: Above is an image of @carsonstorch launching off a hip jump in Virgin, Utah. This was the second part of a week long assignment for Fujifilm. This image was captured on our scout day and this was the first time I put the camera into a high frame rate mode. When I heard the camera blasting away, capturing 102 MP images at an insane clip, I had a giant smile on my face. The camera also tracked the rider perfectly as he dropped into the jump and went airborne. I realize this all sounds like a giant ad for a camera but I am genuinely excited about the possibilities with this camera and shooting full-time with medium format for everything I do. That is a big deal! More to come. For my thoughts on the camera check out my latest blog post - link in my profile. . . . . . . . Images by @russellordphoto | Last week it was an honor to be a part of the @fujifilm_global launch of the GFX 100 and part of that launch had a selection of photographers from around the world who shot with the GFX 100 including Russell Ord, who is one of the worlds top surfing photographers. @carsonstorch launching off a jump in Virgin, Utah. This was the second part of a week long assignment for Fujifilm working with the new GFX 100. These pano images don’t really translate so well here on Instagram but they are still pretty rad images. The first image is cropped from a single image file and even though I sliced the top and bottom off it is still a 62 MP image. The second image is a multi-shot pano made from 20 different images—the file is a 175 MP file and could easily be blown up to be tack sharp on the side of a bus! The original pano file is also 20,000 pixels! My computer took three attempts to create this massive 3.97 GB pano and I have the latest maxed out Apple MacBook Pro! I am going to have to buy some more hard drives as well — they are filling up fast! Portraits are always a part of any and every assignment. While working with the athletes on this most recent assignment with the FUJIFILM GFX 100, I definitely set aside some time to capture portraits of each athlete. With @carsonstorch and @dustywygle these portraits were created outside on location and we used flags and the @elinchrom_ltd ELB 500 TTL strobes to give the images a studio feel. Just to give you a feel for the sharpness this camera can deliver I have included a cropped version of the image of Carson. Mind-blowing sharpness. Note that this is close to a vertical 100% crop but with screen sizes and iPhone resolution that is very difficult to simulate here on Instagram. For all the photo geeks out there like myself, the Face Detection and Eye AF on the GFX 100 nailed focus (at f/2.8 on the 110mm lens) on the eyes of Carson and Dusty even though they were wearing a full helmet and goggles. That blew me away as with my prior medium format camera I would have to shoot ten or more shots just to get one in focus at f/2.2 or f/2.8. I am not sure if I like the color version or the black and white versions better. I am leaning towards the black and white - let me know your thoughts in the comments. My sincere thanks to Dusty and Carson who both worked tirelessly to help realize these images and to @davegardnercreative for assisting me on this portion of the assignment. My thanks also to the amazing folks at @fujifilm_global @fujifilmx_us and @fujifilm_northamerica for bringing me in for this incredible assignment. Also a note on the nature of these posts. Fujifilm is not paying me to post images on social media or gush about the cameras. They never even asked about that possibility. Of course, I was hired to produce the images for the camera launch and I was compensated for that assignment. Nevertheless, I am so excited about the camera I can’t help but speak about the images and the process. Today is the day of the big announcement that I have been keeping secret for months. I am very honored to have been a part of the FUJIFILM GFX 100 launch today here in Tokyo, Japan. This day has been a long time in the making for both Fujifilm and myself. Last summer I was given the chance to try out the Fujifilm cameras and was very impressed with them. Over the last four months I have been working with Fujifilm and a month ago we wrapped an assignment working with the GFX 100. In short, this camera will revolutionize medium format photography. There has never been anything like it in terms of features or capability in the medium format genre. . . . . . . . For the assignment with the FUJIFILM GFX 100 I captured images of rock climbing and downhill freeride mountain biking with an elite crew of athletes. Over the course of the next few weeks I will post many of the best images created on this assignment and also some clips from the vairous behind the scenes videos. The Alps above Chamonix. I have been to Cham several times but have rarely been able to see anything. On this trip a few years ago, the Alps and Mont Blanc revealed themselves to be some of the most stunning mountains anywhere on this planet. Here they got some last light while enveloped in the clouds. This trip was a short one but I will certainly be back and hopefully soon. #alps #chamonix #montblanc

Waves exploding in Waimea Bay on the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii the day before before the 2009/2010 Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau big wave surfing competition. This was taken on my second trip out to the north shore and I was standing right next to my good friend @brianbielmann when I shot this. Teahupo’o. Tahiti. I have been offline the last few weeks as assignments have been full-on, intensive experiences of late. When it rains it pours—assignments always seem to come in back to back to back. I can’t complain though, some great stuff in the works. If you are wondering why I haven’t posted a blog post or put out the Spring 2019 Newsletter it might be because I have barely been home in the last three months. Finally home for a stint and I am really excited about going climbing (without a camera) and relaxing—at least for a few days. I also need to post more here on my social media accounts. I don’t often get a chance to photograph wildlife but on my recent trip to @yellowstonenps we watched three coyotes gorge themselves on a Bison carcass. They repeatedly dove into the center of the rib cage disappearing into the carcass to grab bites of meat and then occasionally squabbled while ravens stood nearby waiting their turn to feast. Yellowstone in winter is an incredible experience and quite cold. My old school plastic mountaineering boots literally cracked in half from the intense cold on my first day there. #yellowstonenationalpark #wyoming #coyote

North shore of Oahu. @djiglobal Mavic Pro. After getting this image I landed my drone on a boulder and it slid off the top just a few inches down to another boulder but that was enough to injure the gyroscope on the camera. Thankfully DJI was good enough to repair it for a very affordable price. I’ll have to be more careful how I land it in the future. #djimavicpro #drone #northshore #oahu #hawaii

The mountains of Oahu. The center of Oahu is rarely visited. As with many Pacific Islands the center portion of the island is a maze of wicked steep, sharp volcanic rock covered in prickly plants. This vista is from the amazing Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden. #hawaii #oahu #hoomaluhiabotanicalgarden

Something about this image just exudes cool, relaxed fun. A surfer on the north shore of Oahu at Ehukai Beach Park. #surfing #northshore #oahu #hawaii #ehukaibeachpark

A few more images from the @RedBull SuperMoon project with the @redbullairforce in Los Angeles, California a few days ago. For the first flight with @jondevore and @chexmachine the moon had not yet come up over the clouds behind downtown LA, but we did have some great light. In this first image you can see Jon and Andy coming down above the @intercontinentaldtla like two falling stars. I was 3.8 miles away with a Nikon 800mm f/5.6 monster telephoto blasting away at 9 fps. To give you a sense of the action from Andy’s perspective, the second shot is from Andy Farrington’s GoPro mounted on his helmet. Andy is not only one of the best wingsuit pilots on the planet, but he is also one of the best wingsuit Cinematographers anywhere. For this shot, he flew right behind Jon Devore for the whole flight to catch the action. In the end, Andy got the best shots of anyone! The last frame is a BTS image and shows my camera and lens setup and just how far away we were. We set up so far away so we could get the compressed images I posted yesterday with the Supermoon. My thanks to Red Bull and @redbullphotography for bringing me in for this assignment. The reaction to this project is pretty incredible. Also, a huge thank you to Scott Houston, @mrvphotography David Clancy and @catekoch for all your help and hospitality on this project. Finally, as always it is great to work with the incredible Red Bull Air Force! #supermoon #superwormmoon #redbullairforce #jondevore #andyfarrington #wingsuit skydive

The last few days have been a nail biter as we waited for weather, permissions and logistics to come together for the @redbullairforce #supermoon project here in Los Angeles, California. Last night many saw the bright flare of light coming from @jondevore and @mikeswansons wingsuit flights. When we got back to @redbull headquarters the flights had already made the news with folks wondering what they saw falling into the center of LA. As usual, it is always a blast to work with the Red Bull crew and especially the Red Bull Air Force. Check out the full video from this project @redbull and stay tuned here as I will post up some other images from this assignment as well later today and tomorrow. ... Also, a shout out to @ladzinski who was up in the helicopter photographing the action — great to meet you and work with you!
