Today we introduce two works by Monika Baumgartl (b.1942), a German photographer and performance artist. Baumgartl’s diverse body of work is united by her interest in time and movement. Perhaps inspired by the ephemeral medium of performance art, Baumgartl’s characteristic photographic series of the 1970s document sprouting seeds, the lunar cycle and other processes. Of particular resonance is ‘Week of World Trade Center Symphony’: the series of photographs Baumgartl took of the World Trade Center when she visited New York in 1978. In this series of seven photographs, the moon is outshone by the electric lights of the twin towers and by the ribbon of light etched across the sky by a passing jet. Since the 1980s, Baumgartl’s attention has shifted away from photography towards Taiko, Japanese drum music. In 1988, she founded Tentekko, a pioneering group who have helped to introduce the art of #Taiko to European audiences. Baumgartl continues to live and work in Düsseldorf. Today we received this photograph by Nobuyoshi Araki, of the photographer’s long-time model and muse, Kaori. Born in 1940, Nobuyoshi Araki is arguably one of Japan's greatest living photographers, and certainly its most controversial. His inexhaustible creative energy is attested to by the more than 300 books he has published in the last four decades, while his work, which often challenges social taboos surrounding sex and death, has drawn critical attention both at home and abroad. We’re diving into summer with Robert Besanko’s c. 1970’s photograph taken in Melbourne, Australia. Entirely self-taught, Besanko created an effect in his work, which was accentuated by the subtle textural quality of the now obsolete Kodalith paper he used in his printing process. The soft, warm tones of the paper create glowing sepia shadows and so produce an image reminiscent of a 19th-century photograph. #Kodalith paper is a type of photographic printing paper coated with an orthochromatic emulsion which gives a high contrast print with very dense blacks when processed in a Kodalith developer. It is a material normally used for graphic art work which, however, can be used to give a range of unusual effects if development is controlled. A brown or yellow appearance can result if a print is given less development time and over-exposed. Robert Besanko Diver, Melbourne 1976/77 signed, titled, and dated in pencil on verso Vintage kodalith silver gelatin print Paper Size: 20.3 x 25.4 cm #robertbesanko #kodalith #vintagephoto #vintageprint

Congratulations to #TadanoriYokoo on his show at @ScaiTheBathhouse. If you didn't make it over to Tokyo in time, we have some of his pop-inflected graphic art prints available for viewing at the gallery in London! Tadanori Yokoo is an illustrator, designer, printer and painter, who became a leading figure in Tokyo's post-war avant-garde scene. Sometimes described as the 'Japanese Andy Warhol', Tadanori's interest in psychedelia and mysticism informed his highly original and individualised pop iconography. Tadanori is also famous for his interdisciplinary collaborations, which included working with renowned fashion designer #IsseyMiyake and legendary film director #TerayamaShuji. The poster above was created to commemorate 'Kamaitachi', Hosoe Eikoh's portrait of #butoh dancer #HijikataTatsumi. Drawing on traditional folklore, Hosoe photographed Hijikata's interaction with the landscape and people of the dancer's hometown in the rural north of Japan. Tadanori reanimated this legendary series in colour, including Hijikata's handprints in gold paint.

2019 marks the 50th anniversary of this very special edition of Barakei! Sometimes translated as ‘Ordeal by Roses’, this poster was designed to celebrate the legendary collaborative portrait series created by three of Japan’s most iconic avant-garde figures: Photographer #HosoeEikoh, graphic designer #TadanoriYokoo, and writer #MishimaYukio. #MoriyamaDaido worked as Hosoe’s assistant throughout shooting. This series of photographs would prove a breakthrough in Hosoe’s career, and as one of the last projects Mishima undertook before his sensationalist suicide, it illustrates the author’s final vision of how he wanted to be understood and remembered. Hosoe had first caught Mishima’s eye with his charged photographs of experimental #butoh dancer #TatsumiHijikata, and the young photographer was originally commissioned to shoot Mishima’s portrait for a new book of critical essays. Hosoe was immediately struck by the strange and ostentatious style of Mishima’s home, shortly followed by his surprise at the famous writer’s appearance: ‘On the veranda, Mishima, half-naked and wearing dark glasses, was sunbathing in a white garden chair.’ Hosoe returned many times to work with Mishima on these complex and ornately stylised portraits, which used the baroque aesthetics of the writer’s home, and incorporated imagery from #Botticelli and #Dali to create a densely imaginative, subjective reflection of the author. In 1970, Mishima shocked the world with his dramatic ritual suicide. After a failed coup, in which Mishima led a private militia to Tokyo’s military headquarters, the writer publicly disembowelled himself in sacrifice to his nationalist ideals. In the months before, Mishima had worked with Hosoe and Tadanori to produce this completely redesigned second edition of #Barakei. Mishima’s inclusion of a new final section to the book entitled ‘Death’ suggested to Hosoe that Mishima intended this publication as a kind of requiem. In his afterword, Hosoe celebrates Mishima’s spectacular idealism even as he admits its fatal role in the life of his long-term collaborator: ‘Here is the perfect body of Mishima, who never admitted the decay of the flesh.’

On this day in 1099, the City of Jerusalem was captured and plundered by Christian forces during the First Crusade. . This is #SoheiNishino's homage to the holy city (centre full image and details are of his diorama, 'Jerusalem'). . Sohei is both photographer and cartographer, walking a city for 6-8 weeks shooting thousands of images on a hand held camera documenting his journey. He then returns to his studio in Tokyo and hand prints all of the photographs, collaging them together from memory to create his internal map of the city. This original collage is then rephotographed and released as a limited edition print. #soheinishino #cartographer #japanesephotographer

Stopping in Paris on your way to #rencontresarles this week? Visit our picture by Dora Maar, on loan to @CentrePompidou and currently hanging in #Paris. Curated in partnership with #TateModern and @GettyMusuem, this retrospective displays the extraordinary scope of #DoraMaar's creativity, from her Surrealist compositions and social documentary projects to early fashion pictures. Maar worked as a photojournalist and commercial photographer to support her travels and political activism; a keen awareness of inequality and a radical sense of sympathetic identification is reflected in Maar's pioneering street photography, which documented European cities during the depression years of the 1930s. Maar was a leading member of Paris' glittering avant-garde, which included Paul Eluard, Man Ray, André Breton, Jacques Lacan and Maar's lover Picasso, and this exhibition illustrates the important role which this context played in Maar's own artistic development. Jeff Bark: #StillLife from #ParadiseGarage now on show! . . This new project originated two years ago, when a visit to Rome inspired Bark to explore his own version of the 18th Century’s Grand Tour. His vision animates seemingly insignificant details with new contextual meaning; souvenirs found in American flea markets assume elevated roles in grandiose compositions, whilst the backdrops to domestic landscapes are wryly peppered with allusions to famous paintings. Bark’s characteristic use of lighting and the ambiguity with which every detail is nurtured, render the image unexpected and faintly uncanny – the pictures might be stills snatched from a lost film reel. @jeff_bark #italy #grandtour #boat #flowers #paintings

Paradise Garage, the most recent body of work by Jeff Bark, going up on the ground floor today! Come and see it from June 26th until August 30th. . “In this case, the pictures are sometimes 15 feet wide by 12 feet high, so you can see everything. It’s kind of like how you looked at things when you were a kid.” - @jeff_bark, 2019. . #ParadiseGarage is a series which plays with our sense of scale. The limited confines of the small garage in which Bark created these cinematic still lifes belie the dramatic proportions of their surreal, cinematic landscapes. From tortoises blown up to the size of tigers to battleships shrunk down to fit in bath tubs, this is an exhibition which gives full play to Bark’s subversive, meticulous vision. . Born in Minnesota in 1963, Jeff Bark lives and works in New York. Our exhibition will run alongside the @PalazzoEsposizioni exhibition of other works from the same series (7th June – 29th July). This will be the third exhibition dedicated to Bark’s work held at the Michael Hoppen Gallery. . 📸 Credit: 2. The Battle, Jeff Bark 3. Gryphon, Jeff Bark

Here are three special works by Guy Bourdin, which were brought out for a client today. . Guy Bourdin was born in Paris in 1928. He was the pioneering fashion photographer whose arresting photographs filled the pages of French Vogue for three decades from the 1950s through to the 80s. He was notorious for breaking the boundaries of traditional commercial photography and reshaping the classic fashion picture, using a daring narrative and vibrant colour palette. Vogue's editor introduced Bourdin to the shoe designer Charles Jourdan, for whom he became the brand's official advertising photographer, producing some of his best images during this period. The beauty in many of his pictures is that you can see small imperfections and fine details such as the models’ pores. In this respect they hold an integrity that is rarely seen today. . In 1950, Guy Bourdin met Man Ray and became his protégé. The spirit of the Surrealists is ever-present in Bourdin's work. . 📷 1. Dior Fashion, Ellen von Unwerth c. 1980 2. Rare vintage work by #KawadaKikuji just arrived at the gallery! . I stared at ‘Los Caprichos,’ ‘Los Desastres de la Guerra’, ‘Los Proverbios’ and other such works by Goya so obsessively that they were virtually etched into my mind itself. As such, for a long time everywhere I looked I found similar imagery here in the real world. It got to the point where I almost couldn’t tell the difference between the two, like I was having dream flashbacks all throughout the day.” Kawada Kikuji, 1986. . These photographs were taken between the 1960s and the 1980s, and first serialised in the influential Japanese photography publication #CameraMainichi. When Kawada reviewed this diverse body of work before exhibiting the series for the first time in 1986, he was struck by ‘the strange visual violence’ of these images, which he associated with #Goya. . Kawada is perhaps most famous for his iconic photobook #TheMap, and as a member of legendary photographic working collective #VIVO. If you missed seeing his work on display in Tokyo at @PGI_Gallery’s 40th Anniversary Exhibition, there is still time to see work taken for his series Last Cosmology, which we have lent to the @HasselbladFoundation for their exhibition ‘Moonlight.’
