Try going a day without plastic. Go ahead. You’d be hard-pressed to get out of bed without encountering the substance in one form or another. Plastic is everywhere and infiltrates our lives in unimaginable and alarming ways. What starts as a film about plastic bags, evolves into a wholesale investigation into plastic and its effect on our lives, bodies and waterways traveling around the world, from Telluride to Midway Island. As we learn more about how little we know about plastic, one thing becomes certain: The advice given to Dustin Hoffman’s character, Ben, in The Graduate—“One word: Plastics”—was right on. • BAG IT directed by Mountainfilm Festival Director @reelthingfilms and winner of the 2010 Audience Choice Award is available on Amazon and iTunes. • #mountainfilm #fromthearchives #mountainfilm2010

The Republic of Tuva, in the heart of Asia, was once an independent country whose people are proud descendants of the conqueror Genghis Khan. For centuries after the collapse of Khan's empire, geographical, political and cultural isolation resulted in the evolution of a unique society of nomadic herders. In this land comprised of desert plateaus and green valleys ringed by snowy summits, an absolutely unique culture has evolved, capped by the development of "khoomei" or throat singing – confounding Western academics and ultimately sounding like a "one-man quartet." • In a series of events both charming and tragic, this world is joined by Paul Pena, a blind bluesman who has played with the greats T-Bone Walker, B.B. King and Bonnie Raitt. Listening to Radio Moscow one night, Pena discovered the improbable sounds of Tuvan throat singers. What begins as a blind bluesman's curiosity of throat singing in the Republic of Tuva unfolds in this unforgettable film into an exploration into human will, culture and the universal love of music. • GENGHIS BLUES directed by Roko and Adrian Belic is available on iTunes, Amazon and Tubi. • #mountainfilm #fromthearchives #mountainfilm1999

In a remote community in the foothills of the Himalaya, a former monk struggles under the weight of his calling. Once a spiritual teacher in the U.S., Lobsang returned to India to create a community for orphaned and neglected children. Tashi — the newest arrival and youngest child with a troubled past and alcoholic father — acts out and challenges her elders every step of the way. But there is a spark in her that Lobsang sees clearly: a person inside the hurt, abandoned child with the potential to blossom and grow. His patience and compassion for Tashi comes from a deeper place than mere sympathy; he was a wild and troubled orphan himself. This portrait of Lobsang and his family of 84 children is a short and lovely reminder that while there is a lot of darkness in the world, there are also beautiful shining points of light. • TASHI AND THE MONK directed by @pilgrim_films and @highaltitudefilms and winner of Mountainfilm 2014's Moving Mountains and Norman Vaughan Indomitable Spirit Awards is available on Vimeo, iTunes and Amazon. • #mountainfilm #fromthearchives #mountainfilm2014

Iceland is an island in the very north Atlantic where the wind is unpredictable at best, where perfect waves are almost as rare as albino elephants and where frigid temps require a full wetsuit arsenal. • In other words, being a surfer in Iceland requires a particular mix of hardiness, patience, passion and insanity. And more than anything, it requires befriending that mercurial, capricious, wildly drunken and occasionally benevolent wind. • You can watch THE ACCORD directed by @rccone on iTunes, Amazon, Google Play and YouTube. • #mountainfilm #fromthearchives #mountainfilm2016

Rajesh Magar ( @rjripper) has been obsessed with bikes since he was a small child growing up in Kathmandu, Nepal. When the other kids were studying, he’d be dreaming about, designing and drawing bikes. As the son of a construction worker and housemaid, however, a bike wasn’t easy to come by. Undeterred, he built one, a clunky Frankenstein, but a mountain bike nonetheless. He started racing, and his drive and raw talent got noticed, leading to a job as a mountain bike guide and a path to professional racing. • In 2018, Magar was named the National Geographic Adventurer of the Year. Today, Nepal’s National Champion is living proof that it pays to stick to your passion, no matter how implausible it seems. • AND after countless attempts and tireless efforts, Magar has finally been granted a tourist visa to visit the US this August. • You can watch RJ RIPPER directed by @joeyschusler and @benpagefilms on @vimeo. • #mountainfilm #fromthearchives #mountainfilm2018

A Somali-American who arrived in the United States at the age of 12, self-described as “an extreme other” — black, Muslim, a woman and an immigrant — Ilhan Omar ( @repilhan) sought to become the first Somali-American to win legislative office. Taking on a 43-year incumbent for a seat in the Minnesota House of Representatives, Omar ran on a platform to alleviate high unemployment and student debt in her central Minneapolis district, which includes large numbers of Somali immigrants and students at the University of Minnesota. “It’s a lot, trying to change the world,” a momentarily exhausted Ilhan tells director Norah Shapiro, whose TIME FOR ILHAN is a virtual guide to how a grassroots campaign can further the restoration of American democracy, at least in a diversifying urban district. • Ilhan Omar was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2016. Who could forget Frank and Jeanne Moore, subjects of Mountainfilm 2014’s MENDING THE LINE? This is an incredible accomplishment for two incredible individuals. Congratulations and gratitude to Frank and Jeanne. • Repost @backcountryhunters: In June, friends and family gathered in Idleyld Park Oregon to celebrate the passage of the Frank and Jeanne Moore Wild Steelhead Special Management Area Act with the presentation of BHA's annual Sigurd F. Olson Award to the infamous Oregon couple. • The Sigurd F. Olson Award recognizes outstanding effort in the conservation of rivers, lakes or wetland habitat. The 2019 award winners are Frank and Jeanne Moore, two champions for wild salmonids and wild rivers. The Frank and Jeanne Moore Wild Steelhead Special Management Area Designation Act, signed into law this year as part of the public lands package, reflects their unmatched impact on the policies and conversation surrounding salmon and steelhead in the Pacific Northwest. • #legends #steelhead #backcountryhuntersandanglers #conservation @oregon_bha #mountainfilm

Owen Suskind's autism made it impossible for him to communicate when he was young. When he became upset, which happened frequently, the best avenue to calm Owen was to let him watch animated Disney films. • One day, Owen’s father, the renowned political writer Ron Suskind, went into his 8-year-old son’s room and grabbed a puppet of Lago, the parrot in Aladdin. Doing his best impression of the Gilbert Gottfried-voiced character, the father asked his son, “Owen, how does it feel to be you?” And Owen answered, providing the first conversation the two ever had. The film takes it from there, showing how story, imagination and the magic of movies can forge a family. • LIFE, ANIMATED directed by @rogerrosswilliams and winner of the 2016 Audience Choice Award is available on iTunes, Google Play, Amazon Prime and YouTube. • #mountainfilm #fromthearchives #mountainfilm2016

Precocious Sophie Cruz convinced her martial arts teacher to let her attend classes when she was just 3 years old. She is a luchadora, a fighter. So when her parents, who are undocumented immigrants, told her they don’t have papers and could be deported back to Mexico, Sophie vowed to keep her family together. On a trip to Washington, D.C., Sophie, then just 6, cleared a security barrier to deliver her message to Pope Francis. • In June of 2016, the U.S. Supreme Court announced it had deadlocked in a decision on the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans (DAPA) which would grant protected status to Sophie’s family and thousands of others and let them live free like the birds. The ruling set no precedent and simply left in place the lower court's preliminary injunction blocking the program. On June 15, 2017, the Trump Administration announced the rescission of the DAPA order. • FREE LIKE THE BIRDS directed by @paolamendoza is streaming on @vimeo. • #mountainfilm #fromthearchives #mountainfilm2018

Crossing through the occupied French countryside, the young soldier daydreamed about coming back in peacetime to fish the bucolic streams. After the war, he returned to the States, married, had a family and built a life centered around fly fishing. But he never made it back to those streams in France. Until 2014. Now 90 years old, but with the energy of a man 20 years younger, Moore completes the dream with his wife and son by his side. This extraordinary story of a dream deferred, and ultimately fulfilled, proves that the scars of the past can be healed.
