We had an amazing time at yesterday’s Mother’s Day Brunch & Graduation Ceremony for the families enrolled in our Parenting Program! 🎓🍼🎓 The young parents at My Friend’s Place inspire us every day with the time, energy, and love they put into raising their little ones and building stable lives for their families and themselves 💖 Each young person was treated a to massage, manicure, lunch, and gifts in honor of Mother’s Day & in recognition of their completion of our 16-week Parenting Program! ✨ Parenting isn’t easy, especially with the challenges faced by our youth, and they definitely deserved a day to celebrate, relax, and feel appreciated for their hard work! #EndingYouthHomelessness
As My Friend’s Place supports more young people moving into housing, we’re excited to continue building our volunteer project, the Welcome Home Helpers! When our youth transition off the streets and into permanent housing, many are lacking the basic necessities to set up a comfortable space to call their own. From sheets and towels to pillows and placemats, our Welcome Home Helpers assist our youth in turning a house into a home. ❤️🏡❤️ So how does it work? We’ll provide you or your group (be it friends, colleagues or social acquaintances) a wish list of home items needed for one of our youth. Tackle the shopping list as you see fit, and then we’ll deliver the Welcome Home package to the young person upon move in. It’s that simple! ❤️🏡❤️ If you’d like to join our Welcome Home Helpers project, send us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org!
Hi everyone! We are in dire need of traditionally “masculine” clothing for our youth — t-shirts, jeans, hoodies, sweatpants, polos, button downs, and more ✨👕👖👔✨ Host a clothing drive at your school, workplace, or in your community, or stop by & drop off gently worn clothing that you’ve been looking to get rid of! All sizes are accepted 💛 E-mail email@example.com to schedule a drop-off or for help coordinating a clothing drive!
Did you know? 🌟 When compared to people with stable housing, mental health conditions are more than twice as common in the homeless population, often due to stigma and the high cost of care. What would our communities look like if instead of shaming and discriminating, we worked to provide care, access, and support? ❤️ #MentalHealthAwareness
We are closed today! We will open up again on Monday morning at our usual time ❤️ If you are in crisis and need immediate assistance, please contact the CA Youth Crisis Hotline at 1(800)843-5200
We ❤️ Sexual Health! We recently completed our first 6-week-long Sexual Health and Wellness Workshop, where we worked closely with a group of young people to provide education, information and support around sexual health and wellness 🧬 The group was led by two clinical social workers and featured guests from Childrens Hospital Los Angeles to provide comprehensive, in-depth sexual health education. Youth participated in group discussions and interactive activities that addressed topics related to sexuality, intimacy, healthy relationships, sex work, and sexual communication in a safe, encouraging and supportive learning environment 🌸 We're proud of our young people for taking an important step to gain more knowledge and skills regarding sexual health and relationships!
May is Mental Health Awareness Month ❤️ At MFP, we encounter young people with mental health symptoms every day and work to provide comprehensive care based on individual needs and abilities, to meet our youth where they’re at 🧡 In fact, homelessness disproportionately affects young people with mental illness, whose families or care-givers are often unequipped or unwilling to meet their needs. 💚 Our goal is to provide a safe place as young people navigate their own mental health challenges, providing support, resources, and safety to help them gain confidence, independence, and wellness, all through a trauma-informed lens 💜 We envision a world where mental health is acknowledged, understood, and addressed proactively to get effective, individualized care to those who need it most 💛 This is just one way that we’re #EndingYouthHomelessness, one young person at a time 💙 #MentalHealthAwareness
April is Volunteer Appreciation Month, and we have so much to appreciate at My Friend’s Place! Whether it’s volunteering solo or with a group, our volunteers help with anything and everything — serving food and snacks, organizing our clothing closet, hosting events and drives, leading creative arts workshops, and so much more ❤️ The work we do would not be possible without them. They are the glue that holds our community together, and we know that our volunteers are making a genuine difference in the lives of the youth we serve, every single day ✨
Our young people had a blast on yesterday's field trip to see Cirque du Soleil in Long Beach! The show was incredible, and most of the youth who attended the event have participated in our circus arts workshops here at My Friend's Place, which made it even more exciting to see a live Cirque du Soleil performance 🤹🏼♂️🎪🤹🏾♀️ This was the first of many exciting field trips we have scheduled for the Spring and Summer, and we can't wait to join our youth in experiencing all the exciting experiences that Los Angeles has to offer!
We’re getting a jump start on summer reading at My Friend’s Place! ✨📚✨ We’ve got hundreds of books, in every genre and on tons of different topics, for our youth to take with them! Or if spending the afternoon reading in our air conditioned safe haven sounds better, that’s always an option, too ❤️ #EndingYouthHomelessness
Every year at our annual gala, we honor Champions in our community whose involvement in My Friend's Place allows us to continue assisting and inspiring homeless youth to build self-sufficient lives. This space represents a lot of different things to a lot of different people. To the youth who visit us each day, it represents a place where young people experiencing homelessness can find safety, community, and support — which is why we are running the LA Marathon this Sunday. Our team of 15 runners will run 26.2 Miles through the streets of LA in support of the youth we serve every day at My Friend’s Place, so we can continue providing the vital programs and services that foster hope, healing, and transformation ❤️ If you’d like to make a difference in the lives of homeless youth, click the link in bio to support our Marathon fundraiser.
We had an amazing time on yesterday’s field trip to @descansogardens! Our young people didn’t let the rain dampen their spirits as they spent the afternoon touring the beautiful 150 acre botanical garden, and enjoyed exploring nature in a new, exciting, and educational way 🌿🌺🌲
Join us this Sunday and cheer on Team MFP as our runners complete the 26.2 mile course of the L.A. Marathon! The MFP puppies need your help! 🐶 We see young people with animal companions every day at My Friend’s Place, and these furry friends provide essential therapy, comfort, and companionship to our youth, while helping young people to hone important skills related to caretaking and responsibility. To support these important relationships, My Friend’s Place provides veterinary resources and supplies to ensure that all pets stay happy and healthy — which is why we need your help! We are currently in need of wet food, as well as dry food for small dogs, to distribute to youth as we help them care for their animals. Click the link in bio to shop off our Amazon wishlist, or visit us Monday through Friday to drop off donations directly. All dog food brands are welcome, and whether it’s a big bag or small, everything makes a difference ♥️

Friday afternoons at My Friend’s Place are super special! 🌈 Every Friday, youth have the option to participate in our sewing workshop, jewelry making class, music recording workshop, or watch a movie. These are great opportunities to engage in some creative and fun activities, or just take the opportunity to relax for a few hours.
Happy Friday, everyone! 🌟 Today’s Black History Month spotlight is Medgar Evers. Evers played an outspoken and crucial role in the civil rights movement in the South, and advocated on behalf of the black community for better jobs, housing, and education, as well as an end to segregation and white supremacy. We admire his unwavering dedication to racial justice, and we hope to echo his values and beliefs in the work we do every day at My Friend’s Place ♥️
This Valentine's Day, show some love to youth experiencing homelessness in our community by sponsoring a Citypak backpack! ♥️🎒♥️ Imagine having to carry all of your possessions on your back, every single day, everywhere you go. For thousands of homeless young people in Los Angeles, this is part of their every day experience. Citypaks are unique backpacks, designed specifically to be used by individuals experiencing homelessness. Just $20 covers the cost of one backpack—less than a box of chocolates! With your support, we can provide Citypaks to 50 young people accessing services at My Friend's Place 💕 Click the link in bio to sponsor a backpack today!
Our second spotlight for black history month is the inimitable Angela Davis! ✨ Throughout her life and career, Davis has fought boldly for racial justice, as well as for the rights of immigrants, women, and the LGBTQ+ community. Well known for her activism against the United States prison-industrial complex, Davis is a champion for the rights of incarcerated individuals, and for transformative justice as a whole. We admire her tenacity, her commitment to justice and equality, and her dedication to defending the rights of all people! ♥️ #blackhistorymonth
Good morning LA! ☀️ Stop by @melrosetradingpost today and visit our booth, where we’ll be selling handmade youth artwork through our social enterprise program, @thecornercollectivemfp. 80% of every purchase goes directly to the young artist! To help us celebrate Black History Month in the Safe Haven, we hired Junior, who has been part of the My Friend's Place community for several months. He created a slideshow to promote black creation and invention, our theme for the month 🌟 We’re so grateful that he was willing to contribute his time, talents, and creativity to help with this project! Junior's presentation highlights the incredible accomplishments of black creators and inventors throughout history, intentionally including important historical figures who aren’t often featured in the mainstream media 🎥 “It's important because MFP is a melting pot of a lot of backgrounds and mindsets, and sometimes people don't understand each other, so I wanted to educate people in a fun way. If one person says 'I'm going to go back to my tent and investigate more about black history and black inventors, then it was a success."
Art can be an amazing tool for exploring identity, empowerment, and self-expression, and we never cease to be amazed by the talent of our young artists! ✊🏾✨ Today, youth participated in one of our black history month workshops, part of our Transformative Education Program, and created these beautiful paintings 🎨 We can’t get over how great they look!
In honor of black history month, each week we’ll be highlighting several black historical figures and activists whose work we admire! ✨ Today, we honor and remember the incredible Marsha P. Johnson. Marsha was a transgender activist and civil rights pioneer, who fought on the front lines for LGBTQ+ and racial equality. She dedicated her life to defending the rights of trans youth, sex workers, incarcerated queer men and women, and people living with HIV/AIDS. In 1972, Marsha established the STAR house, a shelter for homeless queer and trans youth living on the streets in New York City. We hope to honor Marsha and her life’s work by echoing her commitment to equality, respect and opportunity for young people experiencing homelessness, and for all people ❤️ #blackhistorymonth

Many of the young people who visit My Friend's Place every day rely on federal subsidies to feed themselves, especially when we're closed on the weekends 🍔🍓🥬 As a result of the government shutdown, food assistance programs are on hold and many of our young people face an incredibly stressful challenge within the coming weeks -- how to find food. No one should endure the stress of not knowing when and where their next meal will come from, which is why we need your help right now. Click the link in bio to purchase a $10 grocery store gift card to feed a young person experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles ♥️
It’s not too late to sign up!
