Photo by George Steinmetz @geosteinmetz | There are only 47 people living in the village of Padrão, and most of the work on the terraces appeared to still be done by hand and beast of burden. They call this valley the Tibet of Portugal. It was designated a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO a few years ago, which helps to attract ecotourism to sustain the local economy. It was tough find a place to park my car on its one cobbled street, but the potato pancakes were wonderful! To see more of our world from above, follow @geosteinmetz.

Madagascar is a biodiversity hotspot, with over 90% of its wildlife found nowhere else on Earth. The island's diverse ecosystems and its unique wildlife are threatened by the rapidly growing human population and other environmental threats. For me, this is more evidence that the choices we make every day impact our global community and that we are all connected through the world's ocean and waterways. Photo by @daisygilardini | Despite the fact that the brown bear is the most widely distributed of the eight species of bears, its North American range has declined precipitously. Once extending from Alaska to Mexico, its territory south of Canada is now limited to Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Washington. Coastal bears’ diets include salmon and clams, which provide the nutrients necessary to build the fat reserves for winter hibernation. Photo by @BabakTafreshi | As fascinating as the aurora was, the excitement of this couple seeing the northern lights for the first time, bursting in colorful rays above the shore of the Atlantic Ocean in West Iceland, was better. People often ask me the where and when to see the lights. Once you are near polar latitudes in the right season there is no particularly favored place for aurora watching, anywhere with a clear sky, away from city lights and an open horizon works fine. Pick a moonless night to see fainter auroras, especially now that we are deep in the solar minimum and the activity is generally low. Sometimes you have to wait until midnight to see a better display. Anytime from September to March is fine when the sky is dark at latitudes of above 60 degrees. Check reliable sources like spaceweather.com for aurora activity and follow me @babaktafreshi for more. #twanight #aurora #northernlights #astrophotography #stargazing

Photo by @bethjwald | Traditional Quechua weavers from the Andean village of Chinchero stand together during a gathering at a weaving cooperative in the Sacred Valley outside of Cusco, Peru. Through their weaving, they are both maintaining traditions and developing a sustainable business for their community. For many Andean peoples in South America, August is a time to celebrate and honor the life-giving power of Pachamama or Mother Earth. So this month I am celebrating the enduring culture and legacy of Andean peoples of the Americas, and all indigenous peoples across the world who honor, worship and strive to live in harmony with the natural world and who understand that by taking care of the earth, her bounty will sustain us. It is something we should all be more mindful of, and we should all work harder to care for our one mother, this fragile, beautiful earth. By eating the trees and brush, they keep the land open and grassy. Without them, other wildlife, people and livestock all suffer. Photo by @jimmychin | You never know where inspiration will come from. Found this old gem in the archives. First shown to me by the late great Galen Rowell, this 4000ft granite blade inspired my first expedition to the Karakoram in 1999. We sold 500 t-shirts to help pay for the trip. Brady Robinson and I ended up after multiple attempts to make the first ascent of the left skyline. I don’t even remember what we called the route but I do remember being terrified standing at the base of it and throwing ourselves at it fully wide-eyed and gripped. A good reminder of my roots and early motivation for a career in the mountains. For more images of mountain adventures around the world, follow @jimmychin

Photo by @DaisyGilardini | Patagonia is known for its strong winds and beautiful lenticular clouds. Lenticular clouds typically form over mountain peaks where there’s moisture. Lenticulars are also called standing wave clouds, because they’re associated with waves in the atmosphere. They develop when strong winds push air over a mountain. What is interesting is that the clouds stand still and remain stationary. Though wind may move through them, it doesn’t push them. Instead, the clouds change shape by continually forming and dissipating around the crest of the wave of moisture. On clear nights, where there is no light pollution, it’s possible to see the entire galaxy with the naked eye. It’s simply mesmerizing. Nowadays, you’ll find all sorts of smartphone apps to help you locate it and plan your photo shoot accordingly, depending on your location. While in Patagonia, I was able to determine the exact time during the night when the Milky Way would be positioned over the granite peaks of the Torres del Paine mountain range, with the help of one such app. I set my alarm accordingly, and was awake and outside at just the right moment. 2019 IS SO FUCKING WEIRD.
#25anosdotetra
#Repost @fundacaofenomenos with @get_repost ・・・ #fundacaofenomenos #fundofenomenos #fundofenomenos2019 #ODS #ronaldofenomeno #R9 #impactosocial #terceirosetor #cantodaarte #vegearte #manie #bemcomum #mirantecultural #tercaafro #historiorama

Heading back to Madrid after two very busy days in Johor. Thanks, @hrhcrownprinceofjohor, for the hospitality. It was a pleasure to watch the @officialjohor match on the AFC Champions League @theafchub, and to get to know the great structure of the club and a little bit of the projects they have for the future. Hope to be back soon!
