Inez Baron - New York City Council Member - "If we don't take action, aggressive action, low income communities will be disproportionately affected by climate change. Climate scientists predict that areas in New York City, such as the East New York neighborhood that I represent, could be flooded on a monthly basis by the end of the century. The time to act is now." •••• Who inspires you to act? Share your story and tag #NYCCouncil. Carlos Menchaca - New York City Council Member - "As a Council Member, it wasn’t until Superstorm Sandy that I felt the full implications of climate change on our most vulnerable neighbors. People lost everything. By working alongside Red Hook neighbors, I understood how important municipal government leaders are in changing the direction of how we grow our cities and adapt to the these destructive storms. This was the impetus for my run for office. In seven months, I declared my candidacy and won. We need more climate change fighters in office. If you’re reading this and believe that climate change is real, you need to run for office. Our governments are slowly changing and the only thing that can make our policies change faster is electing you." •••• Who inspires you to act? Share your story and tag #NYCCouncil. Alexandria Villasenor - Climate Change Activist, 13 years old - “I was visiting family in California last November when the Paradise wildfire broke out. I was so upset and sick after that trip. I started reading more about climate change and realized the fire was made worse by climate change. Then I started reading about [teen climate activist] Greta Thunberg and saw her speech at the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change [COP24]. It was right after that that I started my climate strike. I go to the United Nations every Friday and strike to remind people of climate change. I miss my classes, but this is too important. Our future is at stake.” ••••• Who inspires you to act? Share your story and tag #NYCCouncil.
