Today marks one year since the start of what is now the second largest Ebola outbreak in HISTORY. Over 1,800 have died already and the virus shows potential to spiral out of control. @who has declared the Democratic Republic of Congo’s outbreak a global health emergency. Violence, inadequate healthcare and widespread turmoil across the country are creating a lethal mix for spreading the virus easily. Women are more likely than men to be affected by the Ebola virus due to their role of being family caretakers, exposing them easily to those infected. We’re sharing stories of women whose lives have been impacted by this deadly virus. • • Picture 1: Yvette is a mother and caretaker in Mangina, the area most affected by the virus. - “I take care of 10 children; 7 are my own and three are the children of my neighbor who died from Ebola. She was only 35 and died at the beginning of the outbreak. We have been neighbors for more than 10 years. Her children are like mine. The little girl fell sick after the death of her mother, her eyes are inflamed. Their mother had a small plot of land that we are keeping for these three children. Right now, two of them go to school. We learned that the children were on the list of those who would be vaccinated so we are waiting for the arrival of the community relays. It is true that the community is afraid of us. We feel isolated.” • • Picture 2: Marie is a market trader in Mangina. - “I sell cassava flour in the market but since the Ebola outbreak I haven’t sold anything. I would like to try to sell elsewhere, but I can’t leave. We can’t travel and people from outside do not come to buy our products anymore. They are afraid of us. My biggest fear is that my six children are not eating enough, I'm afraid they will become malnourished.“ • • 📷: John Wessels/Oxfam #ebola #drc #humanitarian #ebolavirus #ebolaoutbreak #africa #globalhealth #women

Last week, our President Abby Maxman visited the Bekaa Valley in #Lebanon to see our #humanitarian response work and meet with Syrian refugees. The biggest takeaway? That Syrian refugees need our support more than ever. Too many described returning back home a “distant dream” because they still feel it’s not safe enough to return home. • • The US needs to do its part to protect Syrians by extending Temporary Protected Status set to expire September 1. If the US doesn’t renew, several thousands will be at risk of deportation. We made a commitment to offer safety to them during a time of crisis and we cannot turn our back on Syrians now. Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Syrians is set to expire Sept 1. We must extend TPS for Syria for 18 months & redesignate TPS. Without TPS, thousands would be at risk of deportation. Right now, the Department of State says no part of Syria is safe from violence. The US needs to continue its tradition of welcoming immigrants seeking safety and refuge. ⚠️The Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo is now an international emergency⚠️ • Oxfam continues to work closely with local leaders and communities to stop the spread of the virus through sanitation activities and community engagement. Fear within communities is making it difficult to provide help or take action to prevent the spread of the disease - with people at times threatening those trying to help. Many people don’t know who to trust, having spent years caught up in the conflict which has plagued the eastern part of DRC for decades and seen little response from the international community or government. • • Photo: Oxfam #ebola #DRC #virus #emergency #humanitarian #democraticrepublicofcongo #africa #vaccines #vaccineswork

The Trump Administration is considering a COMPLETE shutdown of the US’ refugee resettlement program. Zeroing out refugee admissions would signal to the world that the US no longer cares about human rights or protecting the most vulnerable at a time when the world is seeing an unprecedented amount of people displaced globally– over 70 million. The bigotry and hatred that many of our politicians are spreading is betraying our American values. • Want to take action? Millions of people around the world who process the seafood we buy in big supermarkets like @wholefoods are dealing with harsh working conditions, verbal and physical abuse and pay so low they can’t feed their families. Oxfam’s #BehindTheBarcodes campaign has rigorously analyzed the policies of some of the top supermarket giants to see if they are taking steps to understand and stop the human suffering taking place. Despite their sustainability claims, Whole Foods has the WORST record when it comes to having policies in place that ensure basic human rights are met for the people producing our food. Due to conflict, climate chaos and inequality, the number of people who suffer from hunger has gone up for the third year in a row, with over 2 billion people lacking regular access to healthy food according to FAO’s latest global hunger report. BIG news: Today, the House passed key amendments that are part of the National Defense Authorization Act to end US arms sales to the Saudi/UAE coalition - a key driver in fueling the bloody war in Yemen. US weapons have directly taken the lives of Yemeni children and this vote shows the House is putting the safety and futures of Yemeni families first. This is an important victory on the path to ending US support, and it once again shows the American people and Congress will not stand by and fuel this deadly crisis. Oxfam now looks to Senate and House leadership from both parties to ensure all these amendments, especially the arms ban, remain in the final version of the bill. • • #yemencantwait #yemen #peace #us #humanitarian

The consequences of the extreme drought that hit the Horn of Africa in 2016 still persist today. Climate change is driving extreme weather events to happen more frequently and intensely, causing millions of people living on the frontlines to feel massive effects in their everyday lives. When Naomi, 21, fled her home due to the devastating flooding from cyclone Idai, she was severely pregnant, and on the verge of going into labor. Thankfully, she was able to reach a nearby hospital in time, where she gave birth to her baby boy Maliko*. “I felt like it was a huge misfortune that my first baby was born under such circumstances,” Naomi says. “I didn’t have anything for the baby because everything was washed away.” Now, she is staying in an open-air camp in Malawi’s Nchalo trading center. In the aftermath of Cyclone Idai, mothers in southern Africa like Malita exercised superhuman strength to get their children to safety. "I didn't salvage anything, I just took the children," Malita, 35, recalls. Water levels were already at her knees when she was advised to move to higher ground. She climbed a tree, balancing one child on her back and another on her hip, as she pulled the last one up by the hand. "For two days we were in the tree with no food, and the rain was still falling,” she said. On the third day, someone came by on a canoe to rescue them. In Bangula camp where she is seeking shelter now, Malita is looking after her three children as well as three of her deceased brother’s children.
