So thrilled to see my daughter-in-law, Laura Turner Seydel, featured in The New York Times to talk about her organization, Atlanta Recycles, and her thoughts on the shortcomings of current bottle recycling policies. So proud of Laura and her passionate commitment to the environment and sustainable solutions to the challenges facing our planet. Also proud of her father, my husband, Scott Seydel, and his important environmental leadership. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/04/business/plastic-recycling-bottle-bills.html #environment #environmentalist #environmentalpolicy #newyorktimes #recycling #recyclingideas #atlantarecycles #atlanta

Last week, my friend Lindsey Taylor Wood, founder and CEO of The Helm, launched a new curated online shop featuring exclusively female-founded products, brands and designers. For The Helm, it represents the next phase in a comprehensive approach to investing in women. For women, it represents an opportunity to purchase with purpose — to make our money matter (and reflect our tremendous value as consumers, as well!) The time is now to change the way we invest in equality,” Lindsey says. “We need to honor the women who have the courage to lead. We need to invest in them, make them visible, and provide them with the support they require to accomplish their goals.” To quote my friend, Ruth Ann Harnisch, “Finance is the final frontier of feminism.” Read more about the buying power of women and The Helm at the link in my profile. #women #womeninbusiness #womenentrepreneurs #supportwomenentrepreneurs🙋🏼💪🏻 #feminist @thehelmco

Repost from @lindseytaylorwood ... I couldn’t have said it better myself... “These women! These women have spent decades on the frontlines building communities for sexual assault survivors and living in tents to protect elephants and black rhinos. These women have built and guided some of the world’s leading organizations, advocated tirelessly for and invested in change, brought solar energy to nearly 100 countries, and are master coaches. These women are reimagining industries and systems built on oppression, founding and exiting companies, and making history as the first First Lady in a country to remain in the paid workforce while her husband was in office. These women cheer loudly and challenge lovingly, model what it looks like to listen and hold space, to lead without ego, exercise intention, and to contribute meaningfully. These women tell you to be bigger, not smaller, to trust your gut, and stand in your power. These women move through the world every day in the service of making it more equitable. So, if the chance to adventure with any of these women should ever arise, say yes.” #womenleaders #southafrica #roarafrica #womenempowerment #womenleading @roarafrica

This morning, I had the honor of moderating a discussion about the status of global #reproductiverights with an amazing panel of #dangerouswomen, leaders in the fight for access to health care around the world. To my right: Dr. Agnes Binagwaho (Vice Chancellor, University of Global Health Equity), Shadia Elshiwy (Assistant Regional Director, International Planned Parenthood Federation, Arab World Region) and Dr. Leana Wen ( @drleanawen), @plannedparenthood President. You can watch it here: https://www.aspenideas.org/sessions/reproductive-rights-still-a-battleground Powerful conversation about global battleground of reproductive rights and the war over who controls women’s bodies — herself, her church, community, government? Frontlines heating up again with rollbacks on rights everywhere and this panel gave global perspective on women’s right to choose when and if to marry, have children, access health care. What is the future of reproductive rights? #womensrights #stopthebans #aspenideasfestival #aspenideashealth #reprorights

This week I’m cohosting a Women’s Empowerment Retreat with @roarafrica and Deborah Calmeyer. I’m pictured here with Janetta Bock-Benadie, the first women head of the Tracking Academy in South Africa. I met Janetta two years ago when Roar Africa began supporting the training of youth from rural Africa to be trackers in the tourist industry—which has bigger economic impact than farming, fishing and forestry combined for the country—and now the Academy is training women trackers (one of them is tracking for our Women’s Empowerment Retreat). #Africa #safari #dangerouswomen #roarafrica #southafrica #womenleaders

Legendary New Orleans chef Leah Chase passed away this week at the age of 96. Ms. Chase spent seven decades serving her signature gumbo and hospitality to everyone from Martin Luther King Jr. to James Baldwin to Barack Obama. In 2017, I had the absolute pleasure of interviewing her about her life’s work on the TEDWomen stage. This is a picture of her making me laugh, but along with her sharp wit and wonderful sense of humor, she had a lot of wisdom to impart, too. “In my dining room, we changed the course of America over a bowl of gumbo and some fried chicken,” she would often say. She shared stories from her kitchen and her philosophy of life: “You cannot sit down. You have to keep going, keep trying to do a little bit every day. Every day, you do a little bit, try to make it better. And that's been my whole life.” Watch the full interview at the link in my bio. The last time I saw her she was cooking in the kitchen of her restaurant for a full house. Rest In Peace, Ms. Chase. #leahchase #chefleahchase #dookeychase #dookeychaserestaurant #tedwomen

Titles are tricky — both the personal titles that often follow our names in an introduction and certainly, titles of books which, according to my book editor, can make all the difference in whether potential readers see value in what a title promises. I confess to struggling a bit with the title, “Becoming a Dangerous Woman,” for my book which @sealpress is publishing in October. Declaring myself a dangerous woman — which I did, unexpectedly, in an episode I share in the book — still feels a bit, well, dangerous, and I readily admit to some second thoughts about declaring it even more widely and boldly as the title of the book. There’s a story — in fact many stories — about my evolution from small town girl with no money, connections or influence, growing up in a segregated South to declaring myself "dangerous" at age 76. The best of them are in the book, shared with the hope of inspiring others to be braver, bolder, more daring, to embrace risks — to become as dangerous as we need to be to shape a more equitable world. I had an opportunity to go public with my new "title" of dangerous woman earlier this month as a commencement speaker at the @universityofmiami_hurricanes. After UM President Julio Frenk gave me a wonderful introduction and honored me with a Doctor of Humane Letters degree, I added, “I'm also a dangerous woman.” There was laughter and applause, gratefully. On my blog (link in bio), I’ve included my commencement speech in video and text for those interested in hearing more about why I believe we all need to become more dangerous to respond to these dangerous times. For those of you interested in learning more about my book (and possibly pre-ordering it, if you’re so inclined!), you can find out more here: http://bit.ly/badw-book #commencement #dangerouswomen #dangerouswoman #becomingadangerouswoman #universityofmiami #memoir

Like millions of women, Eve Ensler has been waiting much of her lifetime for an apology. Sexually and physically abused by her father, Eve has struggled her whole life from this betrayal, longing for an honest reckoning from a man who is long dead. After years of work as an anti-violence activist, she decided she would wait no longer; an apology could be imagined, by her, for her, to her. ‘The Apology,’ written by Eve from her father’s point of view in the words she longed to hear, attempts to transform the abuse she suffered with unflinching truthfulness, compassion, and an expansive vision for the future. Remarkable and original, ‘The Apology’ is an acutely transformational look at how, from the wounds of sexual abuse, we can begin to re-emerge and heal. It is revolutionary, asking everything of each of us: courage, honesty, and forgiveness. Life changing—you won’t be the same person when you finish this book. ‘Slim book of incredible heft’ - @washingtonpost. I was honored to receive an honorary degree of humane letters from the University of Miami yesterday and to deliver the commencement speech at the ceremony for the schools of Architecture, Communication, and Education and Human Development, as well as the Frost School of Music and the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. I talked about why I call myself a dangerous woman and encouraged students to be dangerous themselves. We’re living in dangerous times, and such times call on us to be bolder, more daring, and braver in our solutions and responses. Racism, sexism, nationalism, and gender-based violence are on the rise, while compassion, civility, and empathy are declining, I told graduates. But the good news is that young people, more than most, are prepared to be the risk takers, the change makers, the problem solvers. I encouraged architects to put sustainable solutions to climate change at the center of all their designs, medical students to go to the danger zones to deliver the health services people need, and communications students to use media to inform and inspire solutions to climate change, the existential threat to us all. So join me. Jump in, I told them. The water’s rising and warming and I’m counting on you to get us to safe shores. #commencement2019 #universityofmiami #dangerouswoman #dangerouswomen #whyimdangerous @universityofmiami_hurricanes

#Repost @goodworkfoundation ———— “You know those moments when you are bowled over by the generosity of others, all gathering around you and trying their best to move you along even further? That’s how we (the GWF team) have felt on our recent trip to the USA. Our last stop was Atlanta, Georgia, where the amazing trio of @patmitchellmedia @tena.clark and @miche4justice hosted an afternoon where @boyd_varty and @kate_teach_gwf were able to share stories from our beginnings. Tena and Michelle opened their beautiful home to us, and friends from the rural town of Serenbe and beyond were so abundant in their support of our mission to rethink the way that education is delivered. Interestingly, on this trip we have found so many people have said to us that what GWF is doing has relevance for the world, not just South Africa. If we are going to reimagine a better future, we better start reimagining education! To our family (new and old) in America, we can’t thank you enough.”

In this photo, Africa’s best known filmmakers and committed conservationists, @natgeo Explorers and friends, Beverly and @dereckjoubert meet our best President to enlist his voice and support in saving Africa’s big cats, elephants and rhinos. @greatplainsconservation and Great Plains Foundation's co-founders Dereck and Beverly Joubert were guests at this year’s #NelsonMandelaLecture in Johannesburg earlier this month. They have raised public awareness about the threats to the big cats of Africa – habitat encroachment; community pressure, where conflicts arise between animals and people; and, of course, the biggest single factor, hunting! Women are rising and, in many places, being led by women of color, proving with their votes, their voices and their leadership that they are a force for change. Read my latest post to learn about Stacey Abrams (pictured), the Black Women in Politics website (created by @luvvie and her team) and Democracy in Color, led by @aimee_allison, and get involved! It’s time for the media to report these stories, and in my opinion, for white women leaders to support, elevate, celebrate and get behind the many women of color stepping forward into leadership. If you’re going to London this summer, don’t miss the opportunity to see The Jungle, an immersive theatrical experience that puts the audience inside the refugee community in Calais. The Playhouse Theatre has been transformed into a physical ‘camp’ and the play was developed with the people living there. It’s powerful, important and offers a deeply personal and emotional perspective on the refugee crisis. Disturbing for sure but a must see! Theatre that should be informing global policies!

#SundanceLondon panel today on Culture Shift in representation of stories and talent talked about impact of #MeToo and #TimesUp. It was an important panel on the challenges women and women of color face in getting their stories told and and in being the storytellers. First challenge tackled is the lack of diversity of the panel of commissioners and curators, which mirrors the lack of diversity in the film subjects, stories, directors. This year, #SundanceLondon features 58% women filmmakers. #progress #womeninfilm #womenfilmakers #sundance2018
