#fbf @tonnegood and me in Paris at the end of a day of our first couture collections as fashion directors at @harpersbazaarus under the incredible Liz Tilberis. I spent 4 magical years with Tonne. Now Tonne has a book out of her extraordinary work as an editor called POINT OF VIEW. She is one of the greatest fashion editors ever! So many of the photos in her book are images we remember and helped shape what we thought was beautiful and chic. More importantly, you see Tonne in every photo. You see her life and passion. Her love of family, theater, art, saving the planet and most importantly her love of people. She is the greatest American editor working today. Run to get this book! I love her!!! #fashionbook #fashioneditor #editorialphotography #bestfriend #pointofview

Aretha Franklin by @therealpeterlindbergh for @harpersbazaarus Aretha had written a cookbook that was about to be published and Magggie Buckley who booked celebrities for the magazine wanted us to photograph her. Peter Lindbergh and I were assigned the story. The problem for us was how to photograph her. We both thought why not get a piano and have her sit at it. Aretha came to the set and went in to hair and makeup. @orlandopita had prepared two wigs for her which were quite large and exaggerated in our book. She took one look and told him to make them bigger- "I'm a big girl" she told him. When she was dressed she came and sat at the piano facing Peter not the keys. Then she turned to the keys and started to play. She sang ballads so that her face would be more composed and would not have to open her mouth too wide for the photo. @tonnegood was there and Aretha started singing Ebb Tide, one of Tonne's favorite songs. I turned and saw tears streaming down Tonne's face. Aretha then sang Danny Boy. The guard we had for the diamond jewelry was a big, strapping guy, there to prevent the stealing of the millions of dollars of jewelry we had for the shoot. One of his parent's was Irish, and looked at him, he was openly weeping. Aretha gave us what amounted to a private concert, singing the entire time Peter was photographing her. We were all in tears by the time the first shot was over. I had only ever heard her on the radio or on the records I owned by her. To hear her live, to experience that voice was like listening to someone praying through song to God. Although the songs were all love ballads, she sang to the higher love not to another human. It was more amazing than I could ever describe. My heart goes out to her family for their loss and to all of us who loved her for filling our lives with her music. HAPPY BIRTHDAY M! I met Madonna @madonna when Steven Meisel asked me to style her first cover for @rollingstone magazine. Her look at that moment was a bra and a crinoline, which I had. Steven, who had shot her Like a Virgin album cover, thought it might be better if we shot her in jeans instead. I didn't have any, so while Madonna was on set, she slipped off her crinoline and I took off my jeans and gave them to her. We did the shot as I stood in the studio with my black crew neck sweater and tightie whities. Weeks later I was walking in the East Village and heard my name being shouted . From across the street came Madonna and two friends, just to say hello. That has always stayed with me- she was on the brink of super stardom and I was just the guy who dressed her for a magazine cover (and gave her my pants), and yet, SHE crossed the street to say hello. I worked with her and Steven many other times after that, most notably the SEX book. She always came to set 5 or 10 minutes before call time and worked tirelessly the entire shoot. She has always shown great kindness towards me and my daughter and for that I adore her beyond words. Happy Birthday Madonna, love you. A very late nod to National Lipstick Day. I spent over 16 years working under the brilliant Editor in Chief of Allure, @lindawellsny. She was a great journalist. She recognized that beauty was not fluff, that it had emotional, psychological and cultural significance. She and her writers reported on beauty, checked on claims that products made to see if they were scientifically true. The stories were never a regurgitation of press releases, claims were checked for truth, products sent to labs to see if the ingredients actually did what they were suppose to do, experts called. Linda has a great love of beauty and beauty products. She often described how makeup felt to the touch, how the colors made her feel. She wanted the photos we took to have an emotional and visceral resonance for the reader. She kept asking me to shoot in a lab that manufactured makeup. We found a lab. This photo is shot at the conveyer belt where the lipstick bullets come out before they are put into their cases. The photographer @nicolasmoore had beautiful @annev grabbing the bullets as they came down the conveyer belt, reminiscent, of the I Love Lucy, chocolate factory episode. You can feel the texture of the lipstick on her lips and hands. Linda has now taken that expertise and love of makeup to @revlon where she not only oversees the creative but has created a new line for Revlon call Flesh @fleshbeauty. The line is everything she loves about makeup. There are 40 base colors to match any skin tone. The makeup has the touch and feel that she would describe to us at the magazine as the ideal way makeup should feel on the skin. The colors are beautiful and the packaging is great - oh and the size of the products allows the user to carry them easily in a small purse. With all she knows about makeup, this line should be a giant success. Yay Linda! Makeup @markcarrasquillo hair @Brent lawler manicure @deborahlippmann @mrs_severin

The rain has been biblical lately. Photo of @lexiboling by @giampaolosgura for @voguejapan Giampaolo had this idea of having very chic but slightly nutty woman walking through the streets of New York City. Fortunately because of weather apps we were able to tell that it was going to pour down at some point in the afternoon. It gave me a chance to find as many absurd rain hats as possible. This was one. The wonderful thing about doing shoots is that one learns to improvise and use the sometimes less than ideal situations to create images you never would have considered. HAPPY BIRTHDAY GISELE!!! This is Gisele's @gisele first @voguemagazine cover shot by the brilliant @stevenmeisel_ At this point we had been working together for a while. What remains true to this day is that Gisele is always happy. She made the day fun because she never took for granted that it was good fortune to be working and being able to do good work. She never made her upsets your day. She was happy, hard working, open and kind. Almost all great models become successful not only because they are beautiful but because they are grateful. I adore her! Hair @garrennewyork makeup @patmcgrathreal #happybirthday #supermodel #brazil #ilovemyjob

#fbf Summertime!!!! The beauties @elsabenitezofficial and @eusilva shot by @Steven meisel_ for @voguemagazine When magazines actually dedicated full editorials to swimsuits, Steven and I were asked to do a bathing suit story. The problem was, neither one of us wanted to travel for a one day shoot on a beach. So Steven had an eight foot by eight foot 18 inch high plexiglass pool built that could hold warm water and put a rain machine over it. @patmcgrathreal made the models a bit tan. They girls went into the pool, where poor @garrennewyork had to continually go over and get wet to comb out their hair. The rain machine went on, the girls jumped and splashed directed by Steven,as if they were at the beach and we did our story in a studio never having to get on a plane. #summertime #beach #bathingbeauty #swimsuit #splash

@interviewmag closed yesterday. I have worked for Interview over the many years it was published. In 1983 @bruce_weber wanted to shoot the US Olympic hopefuls in Colorado where they were training. Bruce set up his makeshift studio in a field near the Olympic training site. He gave me rope which we tied to the roof luggage racks of two of the station wagons and hung all the clothes on there. Every time a strong wind would come the clothes would go flying. Bruce was obsessed with a @normakamali elastic belt which I had in three colors and he kept telling me to add it to the swimsuits, legging, shorts of both the men and women to make the waists higher and smaller. We met so many brilliant athletes who went on to win medals. The photos were brilliant - Didier Malige @bartpumpkin did amazing hair and because the subjects were in such top physical shape anything I put on them looked extraordinary. The photos were originally for a European magazine but when Bruce turned them in, the magazine said they did not want them because there were not enough advertiser credits. He then called Interview, who snapped them up and devoted the issue to the photos and the US Olympic teams. The magazine sold out immediately! It is now a collectors item. And I love Interview for publishing these images because they were beautiful not because of credits. I have always loved the bravery of Interview magazine and am saddened by it's closing. #olympics #sports #masterphotographer #magazine

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my baby Cayli @knockingonforty. The minute I saw Cayli, I knew I had been put on earth to bring this perfect soul here. I had never seen anything more perfect than Cayli. And I thought I had to protect her from all the dangers - at first pointy objects when she started walking, mean kids when she went to school, bad teachers who would crush her spirit, bad boyfriends - there were so many things that I thought I had to protect her from. The truth is I didn't protect her, I didn't really teach her to navigate those things. She did that on her own- because as I knew when I first saw her - she was a formidable human, smart and strong enough to protect herself. What I did do, I learned from her- she once told me I did not have to fix anything, she could , I just had to listen and be there. We have rarely ever spent time apart. I have learned from her how to be " there". And while I rarely ask her for anything- she knows me enough to always be there even though I don't ask. I always felt some greater thing- the universe, a celestial entity, something made of love - sent her to me. She is as perfect today as she was the day she was born. But I am more grateful than ever that she was given to me. Happy happy birthday my baby. I love you! Photo Barbara Bersell. #happybirthday #daughter #love #family #baby

#fbf @andiemacdowell and me Polaroid by @patrickdemarchelier This was shot while I was fixing Andie for a @selfmagazine cover in the early 1980's. This was before behind the scenes photos were needed as "assets" to be used for social media. It was just us taking photos of each other while we were working. They were our memories of specific moments in our lives. This was before Andie became an actress, she was a very successful, in demand model. Not only was she beautiful and looked like no one else, but she was hilarious, so working with her was always fun. None of us were surprised when she became an actress - she was made for the screen. #ilovemyjob #fashionshoot #model

HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY OPRAH! With @ikimberlyelise and @thandienewton Photo @stevenmeisel_ hair @garrennewyork makeup @patmcgrathreal I always get really nervous before a shoot. So you can image what having to dress Oprah for this shoot did to me! I had three cold sores from the stress. She was, as one hoped, the most lovely human on earth. At one point I asked why she didn't run for president. She replied she thought she could do more good not being in politics. Well, now we can use her running our government with the brains, love, generosity and fairness she brings to everything she does. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY DAUGHTER KATE @katemossagency !!!! During my @harpersbazaarus year, there was only Kate. She was my baby. I requested her for every cover , every shoot- I was obsessed. She was beautiful, fun, she was my doll - I could turn her into any one I wanted to and she as the brilliant collaborator and model she is, could become any thing, any one. I spent as much time off set as on and I loved every minute. When she started modeling in the USA, Calvin Klein asked to put her under contract. She and her agent at Women agency asked me what I thought. I said she is not really model height and may not be able to work a long time, so take the money and run. How wrong was l?!! I love this woman and thank her for all the wonderful shoots and times I have had with her. HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! Happy belated birthday to the beautiful, wonderful and most amazing Christy Turlington @cturlington I met Christy through @stevenmeisel_ when she was 16 years old. She has grown to be an amazing woman which was no surprise because she was an amazing teenager and young adult. For someone who is so beautiful and believe me, she is so beautiful that when you are in front of her it is hard not to gasp at the beauty, she has always put being a good person first. I have worked with her for many years and feel there is no photo I have worked on of her that captures her true beauty. Maybe it is hard to photographically capture that wonderful spirit that is so good and kind and generous. I love this woman and am glad I was able to spend so much time in her presence. #happybelatedbirthday #supermodel

Happy Belated Birthday to Brad Pitt! Polaroid by Steven Meisel @stevenmeisel_ hair @thompriano This shoot was going to be the first male only cover for @voguemagazine . We flew up to Newport RI where Brad was filming to do the shoot. Brad was so sweet and easy and the day was so nice. Steven did not really want him in obvious fashion, so I had a pair of khakis and boots from my friend artist @timsheaffer57 that were completely paint splattered from years of him painting in them. I asked Brad to sign the Polaroid for my daughter Cayli @knockout.beauty because I was embarrassed to fan out in front of him- lol. In the end, he could not be on the cover because the film got moved or something else happened at the last minute but the photos ran. He was and still is a true star! I love that I got to meet him! #happybirthday #superstar #ilovemyjob

The glorious @carolynmurphy shot by #normanjeanroy hair @orlandopita makeup @gucciwestman One of the things I did at @allure was to illustrate ideas in beauty, in this case slowing aging for hair. Most people now are aware of taking care of their skin with creams and lasers and sunscreens but rarely think about the damage happening to their hair from the sun, hair dryers, dyes, shampoos that are harsher than they need to be. Some of the things that are associated with youthful hair are shine and volume and thickness. My Editor in Chief @lindawellsny always wanted us to illustrate the positive, the result of taking care. Showing the idea without being heavy handed is always a challenge. Norman's idea was to shoot Carolyn with an enormous, shiny mane of hair. This was the result. I have had my hair buzzed for many years. It has been getting longer lately and my daughter, Cayli @knockout.beauty, told me to switch to products that would not strip my hair but encourage shine. You would think that after working 16 plus years at a beauty magazine, I would have taken better note of this - but no. The shine is now remarkable as is the strength. I love that my daughter is always watching out for my well being and for my looks. She once told me that our face and the way we look is important to someone- your partner, your children, your parents. And that for them we should always try to look healthy. She is right. Follow her on @knockout.beauty and ask her about your hair and beauty concerns. She is brilliant!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the wonderful Peter Lindbergh @therealpeterlindbergh This portrait of Kate Moss @katemossagency was shot for a story A Star is Born for @harpersbazaarus. The amazing thing about Peter is his portraits give the sense that you are looking into the soul of his subject. He would always say that there were certain subjects he loved to photograph because of the "geography of their face". Kate was one of those subjects. Working with Pater was always fun and filled with the sense that we were going to create something great. I love Peter and I am in awe of his talent and love of his work. He is a master and I am so grateful that I am part of his history. Hair @odilegilbert_official makeup @stephane_marais_official #happybirthday #genius #supermodel #astarisborn #overalls

@kim_williams_model photographed by @stevenmeisel_ makeup @kevynaucoin hair @juliendys Last night I saw the wonderful documentary on Kevyn Aucoin Larger than Life:The Kevin Aucoin Story @kevynaucoinfilm I am still emotional today after seeing how beautifully they captured him and told his story, the good parts and not shying away from the not so good parts. This is from our first shoot together. Steven had assembled us all for this and for quite a while, we did lots of shoots together. Many of my favorite shoots involve Kevyn. Many of my favorite memories also involve him. It is so sad to see such a great talent who burned so bright be taken away from us. The film, directed by @tiffanybartok. is wonderful and gives insight to him, his work, the time period and his stands about gay rights, diversity, inclusion and his belief that everyone is beautiful. As jarring as it was to see him on the screen and talking, it was beautiful to have him back for the running time of this wonderful film. See it and pay tribute to one of the greats of our business! #icon #makeup #supermodel #contour #genius #fbf

#liztilberis @tonnegoodman me #sarajanehoare and #gillesdufour at a lunch at @karllagerfeld This was one of our first trips to Paris for the collections for Harper's Bazaar. It was a time when all the sittings editors, @fabienbaron who was the creative director and the market and accessories editors would travel to Europe for the collections together. Liz was like the Pied Piper. She hired a very big black car that had two rows and we would all pile in. Then we would crank up the music as loud as we could and drive from show venue to show venue singing and talking. We would arrive with windows down, music blasting and then get out of the car. So many of us would exit the car that I am sure it resembled a circus clown car. It was a wonderful time, we loved working together, we were proud of the magazine we were producing and grateful we had Liz as our fearless leader! Whenever any of us sees the other, the affection we have for each other is overwhelming. Our feeling of gratitude to have been part of such a wonderful time in the industry and for the creative freedom we were granted by Liz, shaped all our careers to this day. Thank you Liz!!!!! #harper's Bazaar #friendship #collaborators #ilovemyjob #luckyus #goldenera #tbt
