On this day in 1852, #GeorgeFosterPeabody was born in Columbus, Georgia. After a successful career in investment banking, he devoted his life to philanthropy, supporting educational institutions including Hampton University, the Tuskegee Institute, the Penn School (now Center), Colorado College for Women, and of course, the University of Georgia. "He was perhaps best known as a humanitarian—one who did much to further the causes of education, of religion, of charity, of peace, and of interracial understanding," Louise Ware noted in her biography. The #Peabody Awards were named for him posthumously, and are honored to continue his legacy.
