Looking back this #TBT to the mystery surrounding the Blue Train. Throughout its history a flamboyant Gurney Nutting Grand Touring three-seater has been referred to as "The Blue Train" because people believed it to be the car that famously raced the Blue Train from Cannes to London at the hands of Woolf Barnato back in 1930. But here at Pebble Beach in 2001, the more likely real Blue Train Bentley was unveiled. http://ow.ly/4FLE50uvu1j #pebblebeachconcours #pebblebeachconcoursdelegance

Today we are remembering Norman Dewis, the longtime Jaguar test driver who lived an exciting and meaningful life — and was so often willing to share his ongoing passion for the automobile with enthusiasts here and everywhere. As Jaguar’s test driver, from 1952 to 1987, amidst testing the C-, D- and E-Types, setting production sports car speed records and surviving some pretty dramatic crashes, Dewis helped to develop the disk brakes that have now saved so many lives. And in the decades since his retirement, he often recounted with generosity, humility and wit his many memories of the people and events that define our automotive history. He participated on several occasions in our awards presentation and in our classic car forums. We will miss him.

A month from today Bentley will celebrate its Centenary. Walter Owen Bentley — though he preferred to be called W.O. — founded the company that bears his name on July 10, 1919. He served at its helm just a dozen years, but in that time he forged a legacy that survives to this day—as does the Bentley marque. http://ow.ly/QeO150uvthA #100yearsofbentley #worldofbentley

Celebrating Our Volunteer of the Year: JANIE MARCHMAN The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is supported by a host of volunteers—over 1,000 people!—and during this National Volunteer Week, we want to recognize and thank all of them. We also want to shine the light on one person in particular: Janie Marchman, who was named our Volunteer of the Year after the 2018 Concours. Janie joined our team in May of 2017, when our Hospitality Committee had a sudden and critical need—and she made an immediate and dramatic impact. Janie had recently moved back to the Carmel CA area, and although she had not previously been involved with the Concours, she jumped in with such unbridled enthusiasm that she energized her whole committee. She took the lead in organizing the orientation, received glowing reviews, recruited several new volunteers, and quickly became the “go to” contact for other volunteers. Her fellow volunteers described Janie as “positive,” “solutions oriented” and “insightful.” Her supervisor knew almost immediately that Janie was “totally capable of handling any issues that might arise” at her venue, so she confidently moved on to oversee others. Janie later provided us with detailed observations and wise recommendations for improvements—which we’ve implemented. Janie was nominated by multiple people to be our Volunteer of the Year, and we were happy to name her that. Officially, she is the Richard Murnighan Volunteer of the Year; the award is named for the man who was first asked to recruit and head up a formal volunteer workforce for us back in 1974—and continued to do so for decades. Please join us in congratulating Janie! #LifeofService #PebbleBeachConcours @beapointoflight

Getting to Know Longtime Pebble Beach Concours Judge Ivan Zaremba: Normally when we ask people who sparked their automotive passion, we hear the names of close family members or automotive greats. But Ivan Zaremba responds with a list of key collectors: "Miles Collier, Roberts Harrison, Arturo Keller and Tom Perkins—the people who've given me firsthand seat-of-the-pants experience" in restoring their cars. Zaremba has been in the restoration business since 1973, so he has, by now, accumulated a LOT of experience, focusing in particular on pre- and postwar racing cars. He has avoided specializing in a specific marque, preferring instead to be available "to get almost any dream on the road." Ivan has owned cars from Maserati, Hudson and Railton, but he's most fond of and uses—every day, "in every way"—the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider he purchased back in 1964 when he was 21. #pebblebeachconcours #pebblebeachconcoursdelegance #meetourjudges #pebblebeachconcoursjudge

Dr. Paul Sable, a longtime Pebble Beach Concours Judge, considers himself an “overall car enthusiast,” but he is a fervent collector of 1950s hybrids—and by “hybrids” he means Dual Ghias, Facel-Vegas, Hudson Italias, and Nash-Healeys, cars that often married the efforts of two creators or companies. He recently restored a 1956 Continental and a 1968 AMX, and he is now at work on a Debonaire that he promises will be his “last” such effort—although no one believes him. Dr. Sable first served amidst our Class Judges in 2003, and he has now judged at most of the well-known concours in the United States. #pebblebeachconcours #pebblebeachconcoursdelegance #meetourjudges #pebblebeachconcoursjudge

Honoring a Veteran from a century back: The Cadillac Type 57 Seven-Passenger Touring Car was chosen by the US military as the official car for officers in France. In August 1917, the Rev. Dr. John Hopkins Denison took delivery of this Cadillac and immediately gave the car to the YMCA, along with his services as driver, to support America's effort in World War I. The car was used at the front during the Second Battle of the Marne, the battle that led to the end of the war on November 11, 1918. The "Liberty Cadillac," as it is called today, is the only known original survivor from the Great War. #pebblebeachconcours
