"A painting is not a picture of an experience; it is an experience." - Mark Rothko I deeply think we could all do with a bit more of Rothko's principles in our way of photographing; insisting on the primacy of raw emotion to push the boundaries of form and color to make photos appear as painting-like as possible. #TheFENCE 8th edition series Paradise Lost 📸 : Adriana Loureiro (@estascalles) . . . Those who stay can only think about leaving. Those who leave can only dream of returning. Venezuela is currently going through a severe humanitarian crisis that has led to millions of citizens fleeing the country. The Venezuelan diaspora and refugee crisis is the largest that the South American continent has seen in modern history. Within that context, Venezuelans are constantly struggling with their sense of identity and belonging. What is home? Is it what you leave behind, what you carry in your backpack or what you carry within you? The Venezuelan people have a love-hate relationship with their country: they love the landscapes, warmth, and cultural heritage, yet they hate what it has become and all of the scars that have been left on each citizen. But the truth is that a longing to return is shared by those who leave, and it is hoped for by those who are left behind. There is a melancholy of being home but feeling completely alienated in a place that you no longer recognize because all of the indications that created a feeling of being at home have disappeared under the crushing weight of the collapse of the country. This is the place that I call home, and this my experience of our collapse. . . . You can see Paradise Lost now at The FENCE 8th Edition Brooklyn. @United_photo’s #TheFENCE 8th edition series The Lowriders: From Detroit to L.A. and Back 📸: Erik Paul Howard (@erikpaulhoward) . . . The cars that serve as traditional lowriders were originally designed and built in Detroit. They were sent around the world and eventually inspired a number of automotive customization cultures, many of which worked their way back to the Motor City itself. In Los Angeles, late 1930's Pachuco culture popularized the low slung stance that came to be emblematic of lowriding as a social and stylistic statement. L.A. eventually innovated hydraulic suspensions in the 1950's, a qualifying modification of lowriders soon thereafter, with the ability to adjust the cars' ride height while still driving, in response to law enforcement's targeted crackdowns. Since then lowriding has traveled across time, cultures, communities, and geographies as it has developed its own unique characteristics in various locales on its round trip voyage back into the heart of Detroiters where the culture is integrated into the lives of riders and their families. - Erik Paul Howard . . . United Photo Industries (@united_photo)'s #TheFENCE National Winner- Cravings featuring Lauren Vied Allen ( @viedfinder) & Victoria Bouloubais (@thisfeedsme) . . . Food has become one of the most hyper-glamorized commodities. Dining out is among the fastest growing retail sectors in the country. Through varying levels of (self) awareness, restaurant cooks deftly navigate the complex dynamics of class, privilege, and legal status that play out in a changing South behind the kitchen door. The product of their labor is dignified in public view, glorified on social media--cheekily, as #foodporn. It would not be presumptuous, then, to assume that cooks have developed a culinary expertise far superior to any diner’s palate. But we rarely consider their work as a skill. It’s the immigrant’s contribution to us. The voyeuristic gaze of Instagram food porn dives into an aesthetically symmetrical view of a world that is inherently asymmetrical. . . .

One could argue that the needs of a person are relatively few: food, water, shelter, companionship. But most of us aspire — desire — to reach beyond our basic needs. We want for more. Unlike needs, wants differ greatly from one person to another. Some may want material goods: a car, a home, an expensive watch or piece of jewelry; while others may want things less tangible: travel far, climb high, dive deep, experience all that life may offer. . . . This year the Tokyo International Photography Competition invited photographers to explore the urgent push-pull relationship between “need” and “want” through their photographic lens.
