Sam Durant’s American Hospitality (Biological), as seen in The Sound of Silence. Greeting visitors as they enter the gallery, a folded blanket and a bottle of Jack Daniel’s resting on a pedestal is a caustic meditation on notions of exchange. The work refers to soldiers (a British Commander in the eighteenth century, the US Army in the nineteenth) who reportedly distributed smallpox-infected blankets to American Indians. Whiskey was often used to debilitate Indian populations as they were not used to alcohol. ⁣ -⁣⁣ Sam Durant⁣⁣ American Hospitality (Biological), 2006⁣⁣ Military surplus blanket, whiskey and pedestal 5 x 18 x 18 in (12,7 x 45,72 x 45,72 cm) ⁣⁣ -⁣⁣ #SamDurant⁣⁣ #PrazDelavallade

Sergio Verastegui’s ‘Ecdysis 1’ as seen in our summer group exhibition ‘The Sound of Silence’. Bringing together a strong material presence and conceptualism, Verastegui's works appear as fragments of realities extracted from a torn-up world. Verastegui willingly quotes Alain Badiou with regards to his own work : "The importance lies not in knowing what one has forgotten but in understanding what has left its mark on us". De-contextualized and re-contextualized, the fragment-traces that are the components of his installations, if they do not lose their original quality as vectors of meaning, readily adopt others. - Sergio Verastegui Ecdysis 1, 2019

Matthew Brandt’s solo exhibition "Rocks and Eagles" is on view at Newark Museum through January 2020, don’t miss it! . Matthew Brandt: "Rocks and Eagles" presents two new photographic series by the artist, installed in the Museum’s contemporary Seeing America galleries. Brandt, who lives and works in Los Angeles, made several trips to Newark in 2017 and 2018, photographing natural sites throughout the state and engaging with the Museum’s art and science collections. The resulting large-scale works capture the New Jersey landscape as both subject and material, incorporating rocks, glass, and other local elements. In the main gallery, Brandt has created an immersive installation of 100 daguerreotypes of eagles, inspired by the current political atmosphere. These photographs, originally taken in Alaska in 2014, depict American bald eagles fighting for salmon and are made with melted American Silver Eagle coins and glass. . @phatbrandt #MatthewBrandt #NewarkMuseum

For Apolonia Sokol painting is an affair of the tribe, the family and the entourage, a collective notion that is illustrated in a body of work whose subjects are often chosen from her inner circle. She transposes onto canvas the elective affinities of her encounters, turning friends, lovers and beautiful souls passing through her life into life-size, full-length portraits, either alone or in pairs. Although she is first and foremost a painter, Apolonia creates associations and alliances in an approach that is nevertheless a far cry from post-modern hybridisation, while reaffirming the position of the subject, of the triumphant self that travels the world, her world. In the wake of this confrontation with the raw material of reality, she incorporates without distinction elements of art history and pop culture, emotions that cannot be expressed in words and the banal accidents of everyday life into her work. . Congratulations to Pierre Ardouvin for his participation at Bienalsur 2019. His installation "Hôtel de l’Univers" is now on view at Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas, Buenos Aires, through 25 August 2019. . “It was while visiting the hotel for immigrants last year — a building constructed at the beginning of the 20th century in the port of Buenos Aires to welcome and assist the hundreds of immigrants coming from all over the world and which now houses the National Museum of Immigration and the Centre for Contemporary Art, the MUNTREF — that I began to imagine this installation. The work follows an eponymous installation produced in 2018 representing an imaginary scale model of the famous Hôtel de l'Univers where Arthur Rimbaud settled when he landed in Aden, Yemen, in August 1880. Since it is the only hotel in the city, it is an elementary building located in a rocky and desert landscape. It is this image of the poet in exile staying at the Hôtel de l'Univers that inspired me to create this work, which I thought of as a space to be invested, activated and occupied by the public.” – Pierre Ardouvin . @ardouvin #PierreArdouvin #bienalsur2019 #PrazDelavallade

What is remarkable in Karine Rougier’s work is her capacity to place herself in-between worlds, with one foot in tradition and the other playing the role of the outsider. This duality could be a source of antagonism, but instead Karine skilfully plays with it, representing on the one hand characters and landscapes inspired by everyday life and folk tales and, on the other, resorting to an almost automatic form of writing embodied in an obsessive repetition of themes that unlock the doors to the subconscious. This hybridity, inspired by her travels and a desire to believe in marvellous things, puts the magic back into the reality of life, onto which she grafts a dreamlike world where magical forces are at play and which is filled with fantastic flora and fauna and a new take on mythological figures. . Jwan Yosef’s work holds a poignant subtlety that is loaded with political and autobiographical signifiers. Golnaz Payani studied painting, but her multifaceted creations go beyond the sole practice of painting and are reminiscent of the golden period of ornamentation. Whatever her chosen medium she recycles time itself, catching it as it tries to fly away and capturing moments in the frame, on canvas or on paper, of which she tries to preserve traces when they burst into flame. Even if the story is over and done, she brings us remnants of its fragrance, colour and framework in creations that function as relics of this absence, of the inevitable dissolution of time and memory. Her body of work is an invitation to embark on a contemplative journey through a land where different times, realities and memories, both collective and individual, are entwined. . Marnie Weber: Songs That Never Die and Other Stories opens tonight at the MCA San Diego from 5-8pm in conjunction with the museums local program, Downtown at Sundown.
. Marnie Weber emerged in Los Angeles’s punk music and performance art scene of the 1980s, and has since become known for installations in which sculpture, film, music, costuming, and collage come together to form whole, fantastical worlds. Weber’s homespun, haunted-house aesthetic evokes the gothic side of American folkloric traditions, imparting a sense of old-time magic to narratives of lost innocence. Her dream-like films feature a cast of motley characters, including animals, monsters, trees, and clowns, with supernatural female protagonists at their centers. In the artist’s macabre fairy tales, these figures navigate uncanny landscapes on journeys of transformation. In 2005, Weber debuted her filmic installation Songs That Never Die, which introduced the Spirit Girls, a fictitious all-female rock band whose members died tragically in the 1970s. Wearing white masks, long wigs, and Victorian attire, the Spirit Girls were inspired by the male theatrical rock bands of Weber’s youth. The band also reflects Weber’s interest in the American Spiritualist movement of the 19th century, in which young women were the central public actors, performing séances before audiences. Like the Spiritualists, who ushered in the nascent women’s rights movement, the Spirit Girls’ music delivers messages of liberation from the great beyond. . Daniel Horowitz’s practice is characterised by a unique combination of realism and surrealist abstraction in which images make light of the actual nature and scale of objects creating phantasmagorical landscapes in their stead. His paintings employ associative reasoning - projected together, heterogeneous subjects become strange, but psychologically coherent landscapes - and seem to suggest a narrative, the promise of which fades away into a strange ambiguity. Willingly taking into consideration certain forms of contemporary reality, social concerns and uprooted identities, this iconography lends a dreamlike quality to Horowitz’s paintings. . Don’t miss Fabien Mérelle’s solo exhibition "abri, pierre, bois, encre, papier" at CCCOD, Tours. The show is on view through 22 September 2019. . For his first solo exhibition at the CCCOD, Fabien Mérelle presents selected recent works depicting the human figure in a natural, or even wild setting. The artist often features as the protagonist, always wearing his striped pyjamas, a recurring outfit embracing the dramatic quality of the compositions. He uses this character to mirror reality, reflecting his parenthood. Mérelle explores the various aspects of this theme with visual proposals that sometimes point to the harmony between nature and humans. This synergistic relationship between a species and its natural environment is sometimes seen in terms of freedom, but the artist also develops contradictory scenarios examining the idea of shelter, therefore calling upon the instincts of retreat and protection. . @merellefabien #FabienMerelle #CCCOD #PrazDelavallade

Jean Claracq paints miniatures and icons in which he pays attention to even the slightest details. Although he finds his models on social media, his paintings resonate with a thousand learned references. He skilfully plays with a multitude of possible interpretations in urban compositions that portray with surgeon-like precision our relationship with screens and solitude. Where you would expect to find the painter, you see the reflection of a photographer: the artist takes a step back, finding in the process a way to portray the contemporary world. In his experimentations, Jean Claracq has gone beyond a simple presentation of things and created an experience that conveys life itself through his compositions and emotions in his technique. . Congratulations to Amanda Ross-Ho! She will be included in the 2019 edition of the Ljubljana Biennial. - The Ljubljana Biennial of Graphic Arts, which will be held in the Slovenian capital from June 7 to September 29, has named the artists participating in its 33rd edition. The show, titled “Crack Up – Crack Down,” is curated by the Berlin-based collective Slavs and Tatars, who are part of the line-up for this year’s Venice Biennale. The biennial will focus on satire as a vehicle for political and social critique. Spanning nine venues in Ljubljana, the exhibition will include installations, new-media works, performances by stand-up comedians, and more. The curators said in a statement, “With the rise of populism across the globe (not to mention reductive and revanchist forms of identity politics), there has been vigorous debate over who constitutes ‘the people.’ For more than a millennium, satire has been a particularly contested genre to explore such questions, via varying degrees of serious invective or jocular teasing.” - #AmandaRossHo #SlavsAndTatars #PrazDelavallade 📸 by Sebastian Micke
