Through monoprints, drawings, and dynamic installation, Hock E Aye Vi Edgar Heap of Birds illustrates messages of social urgency in his latest solo exhibition at @momaps1, the contemporary exhibition space of the Museum of Modern Art. Surviving Active Shooter Custer reanimates the history of settler violence and native displacement in Oklahoma, where the artist has lived since 1981. Heap of Birds connects the past and present by addressing both late tragedies and current injustice through a variety of song lyrics, references to historical events, political speeches, and other sources in a series of hand-written posters that mirror public protest. On view through September 8, 2019. #edgarheapofbirds #momaps1 #onview #installation #exhibition #nyc #newyork #contemporaryart #protest #happenings

In our last issue, we talked to Lee about his process: “I enjoy roaming and being unaware of what lay ahead. Over the last fourteen years I’ve spent a great deal of time road-tripping and making photographs, and it’s usually by way of small highway and back road, and it’s usually the rural side of America...I remain fascinated by these American scraps, and what lay behind, and by the environmental dissonance that defines topographical photography and makes it interesting. America is a beautifully odd landscape, and I enjoy exploring and documenting it.” Read the full Q&A on readartdesk.com 📷: Photographs by Jason Lee #jasonlee #photography #tulsa #onview #exhibition #oklahoma #contemporaryart #philbrook #philbrookdowntown

Janet Echelman’s environmental interventions sprouted from true creativity—the Fulbright scholar’s first exhibition was rapidly approaching in India, and her paints never arrived. “I was staying in a South Indian fishing village, and each afternoon I walked the long beach, watching the fishermen bundling their nets into mounds on the sand,” says Echelman from her studio in Brookline, Massachusetts. “I’d seen it every day, but this time I saw it differently—a new approach to sculpture, a way to make volumetric form without heavy solid materials.” Finding a way to create massive installations without the mass, Echelman’s string pieces are able to hover over a city like a new-age quilt, nurturing public work and urban aesthetic. Echelman’s work will be on view this summer at the @greenboxarts festival in Green Mountain Falls. Mark Manders’ Tilted Head was recently installed in the SE corner of Central Park and is on view through September 1, exhibited by the @publicartfund. The 13-foot tall sculpture is molded to look like unfired clay, but is actually cast in bronze. “All of my work is an ode to the fictional,” says Mark Manders. “My choice of materials stands in contrast to the illusion created by the finish of the sculpture – while bronze and wood are durable and permanent, the appearance of wet clay suggests temporality and transition. It is my hope that in creating an enigmatic narrative and by placing this seemingly unfinished sculpture at the southeast entrance to Central Park, viewers will question the nature of this work.” #tiltedhead #publicart #publicartfund #markmanders #nyc #exhibition #sculpture #publicsculpture #centralpark

Despite the prominence of women as performers in ballet, the choreography is unquestionably dominated by men. Male dancers often have more downtime to work on their choreography, and greater job security in a field in which male dancers are in higher demand. The exhibition is driven by quotes from these discussions and oil paintings, murals, and video. Love (2019) is a depiction of relationships that’s different than what the artist normally encounters, she says, “I think black love is usually portrayed as this heteronormative thing,” explaining that she wanted to show a different perspective. The winter issue features Neil Gaiman’s @neilhimself desk in our #AtWork section. Gaiman is an award-winning, best-selling author whose works include American Gods, #Coraline, Anansi Boys, and The Graveyard Book. “My desk is in a cabin in the woods. It’s a converted Victorian piano my wife gave me as a birthday present long ago. Through the window I can see deer and squirrels, chipmunks and turkeys, sometimes even the occasional bear. I miss the wonderful clickers-clackety keyboards of bygone years, so I buy contemporary versions that are almost, but not quite, as much fun to type on. I have ink there too, and fountain pens, and love the tactile sensation of writing with a fountain pen in a notebook. Recently I had to put Wi-Fi in the cabin, and so I built a writing gazebo, even farther away from the house, with no Wi-Fi at all and where nothing but work can be done. Our next-door neighbour is a potter, and she has been working for years now to make me a cup that I would drink my tea from. Each version gets larger, and holds more tea.” 📷: Augusta Ogden #artdesk #readartdesk #neilgaiman #writing #tea #desk #workspace #author #contemporaryart #literature
