Despite the prominence of women as performers in ballet, the choreography is unquestionably dominated by men. Male dancers often have more downtime to work on their choreography, and greater job security in a field in which male dancers are in higher demand. In the spring of 2018, the New York City–based American Ballet Theatre announced a new multi-year program called ABT Women’s Movement to showcase the work of women choreographers. Read more about the program in this article by @allisoncmeier on readartdesk.com: bit.ly/2IPQ2B0 📷: A scene from Jessica Lang’s Garden Blue (2018), as part of the ABT Women’s Movement. Tatyana Fazlalizadeh’s solo exhibition, Oklahoma is Black, is on view at @okcontemporary through May 19. @tlynnfaz’s work in this show centers around her experience as a black Oklahoman, tying in those of friends, family, and community members who shared their own experiences. The exhibition is driven by quotes from these discussions and oil paintings, murals, and video. Love (2019) is a depiction of relationships that’s different than what the artist normally encounters, she says, “I think black love is usually portrayed as this heteronormative thing,” explaining that she wanted to show a different perspective. The text under the painting reads “It’s hard to find spaces that are welcoming and accepting of my basic existence. I’ve spent years learning how to self-validate and that, along with the support of close friends and family, has been my saving grace.” #okisblack #oklahomacontemporary #okc #onview #installation #painting #exhibition #love #oklahoma #contemporaryart

The winter issue features Neil Gaiman’s @neilhimself desk in our #AtWork section. Gaiman is an award-winning, best-selling author whose works include American Gods, #Coraline, Anansi Boys, and The Graveyard Book. “My desk is in a cabin in the woods. It’s a converted Victorian piano my wife gave me as a birthday present long ago. Through the window I can see deer and squirrels, chipmunks and turkeys, sometimes even the occasional bear. I miss the wonderful clickers-clackety keyboards of bygone years, so I buy contemporary versions that are almost, but not quite, as much fun to type on. I have ink there too, and fountain pens, and love the tactile sensation of writing with a fountain pen in a notebook. Recently I had to put Wi-Fi in the cabin, and so I built a writing gazebo, even farther away from the house, with no Wi-Fi at all and where nothing but work can be done. Our next-door neighbour is a potter, and she has been working for years now to make me a cup that I would drink my tea from. Each version gets larger, and holds more tea.” 📷: Augusta Ogden #artdesk #readartdesk #neilgaiman #writing #tea #desk #workspace #author #contemporaryart #literature

Danish filmmaker Jørgen Leth filmed #AndyWarhol eating a @burgerking burger as part of his 1982 film “66 Scenes from America.” Leth recognized the burger as an icon of American culture, and was a long time fan of the artist when he approached Warhol to film. The video clip is a little over four minutes long, depicting this consumer culture icon eating a burger from start to finish—but rumor has it that Warhol was disappointed the burger was not from @mcdonalds, one of his favorite brands among the oft-depicted Campbell’s soup can or @cocacola. Thirty-five years ago in Miami’s Biscayne Bay, eleven uninhabited islands were encircled with pink fabric. This exhibition commemorates the ambitious environmental intervention by Christo and Jeanne-Claude, and its lasting impact on Miami as a center for contemporary art. Through drawings, models, photographs, and surviving materials, visitors can explore the brief two-week life span of Surrounded Islands, and the incredible effort by the two artists to leap over government and logistical hurdles to make their vision—and the 6.5 million square feet of floating fabric it required—a reality. Did you catch our live stream through the new #MelBochner exhibit at Tulsa’s @philbrookmuseum? Collector and lender to the exhibition @jschnitzerff took us through some of his favorite Bochner works on display now through January 6, 2019. The solo exhibition, AMAZING!, features Bochner’s work from the 60s to today. Curator Sienna Brown describes these works as more than just prints, with their sculptural textures and 3-D effects. Museum director Scott Stulen says they’ve chosen to display a few works (like the one pictured here) with open frames, not behind glass, so that viewers get the full experience, “allowing the immediacy of the work to come through.” And literally!
