"I always felt like I was different, but also special." This Pride Month we celebrate LGBTI asylum-seekers and activists like Biko Beauttah. Biko is a transgender woman from Kenya. She arrived in Toronto in 2006 seeking asylum. "I knew I couldn’t go back to Kenya, where I could be killed, so I applied for asylum in Canada in 2006. I was detained for 36 hours upon arrival and spent my first six months in Canada in a refugee shelter before a landlord finally agreed to rent me an apartment." "I’ve been on the @TyraBanks show and am now one of the faces of Nordstrom [retail chain]. Despite these successes, I still experience transphobia here in Canada, just like every trans person anywhere in the world.”⁣ Whether it's Pride Month or any other time of the year, we believe LGBTI people are entitled to the same human rights as everybody else. Everyone should have the right to love who they love and be who they are without fear. A better future awaits Baby Abigail Abigail is foundling and an orphan who was once at risk of being stateless or having no nationality. Almost 700,000 people are at risk of being stateless in Côte d'Ivoire. Among them are foundlings like Abigail who had been abandoned by their families. Without at least one Ivorian parent, they cannot claim citizenship. The Nest is an orphanage that has cared for foundlings for 70 years. In 2018, judges ruled, based on testimony from friends and caregivers, that children from The Nest and elsewhere were eligible for citizenship – the first time since 1972 that foundlings had been given Ivorian citizenship. The historic rulings will allow them rights they never had. Along with the Côte d’Ivoire Women’s Legal Aid Association, we have led a four-year campaign helping people battle the risk of statelessness. A #FlashbackFriday to when I met heroes and heroines in #Ukraine. 🇺🇦⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ So many older people have been forgotten by society in Ukraine – but not at this emergency shelter near Kiev. Vladimir lost both his legs and was evacuated from his home after fighting broke out.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ He told me he enjoys drawing 🎨 and is happiest when he can draw where there is sunlight. But he was unable to get out of the house as there was not enough funds to support him and the other people in the centre. ⁣ ⁣ The situation there was heartbreaking - and it will always stay with me. - @helenachristensen ⁣ ⁣⁣ Photos: © UNHCR/Helena Christensen, © UNHCR/Hector Perez⁣⁣ ⁣ #WithRefugees #Refugees #StepWithRefugees #Ukraine #Rwanda #Colombia #HelenaChristensen

Meet Maribeth. I met her in Altos de La Florida, Soacha, which is an illegal settlement just outside of Bogota, #Colombia 🇨🇴⁣ ⁣ I spent a day with her, she is a single mum and told me that her children "are the most important thing" in her life - "they give me a reason to work and live." ⁣ ⁣ Maribeth fled the Pacific coast when she was only seven years old, after armed guards shot and killed her mother and sister. Our Special Envoy Angelina Jolie was in Latin America this weekend – this was her message from the border between Colombia and Venezuela as the news broke that the number of Venezuelans who have left their country has passed 4 million: >> more leadership, more humanity, more support << “We need humanity more than ever, and rational thinking from people who are unafraid to take responsibility and show leadership,” she said. During her two-day trip to Colombia with us, the UNHCR Special Envoy heard harrowing stories of mothers forced to sell their roofs to make the life-saving journey out of Venezuela. She heard of stories of starvation and of fruitless searches for medicine in the country. To the 41-year-old single mother who packed up her six children and headed for the Colombia border with nothing she had this to say: “Your children will think back on this time as the time when you saved them.” Photo: ©️ UNHCR/Andrew McConnell #AngelinaJolie #Venezuela #Colombia #inspiration #quotes #refugees #withrefugees

Did you know there was a World Refugee Year?⁣ ⁣ The origins of UNHCR’s logo dates back to World Refugee Year exactly 60 years ago. ⁣ ⁣ To provide better assistance to refugees and find permanent solutions for them, World Refugee Year led to the creation of a commemorative stamp sold by 70 postal authorities across the world. ⁣ ⁣ Designed by Danish artist Olav Mathiesen, the stamp depicts a refugee sheltered by two hands. The emblem would go on to become the official logo of UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. ⁣ ⁣ Photo: © UNHCR Records and Archives Section⁣ ⁣ #NationalArchivesDay #archives #refugees #records #logo #design⁣

Reaching safety.⁣ ⁣ Mohamed and his family fled the war in Syria, only to be faced with a similar situation in Libya. The family lived in fear as they heard the sounds of fighting outside the center they were detained in.⁣ ⁣ This photo was taken at our Gathering and Departure Facility in Tripoli, right before they were evacuated to Italy. ⁣ ⁣ Mohamed and his wife Eied are hoping for a better life for their three children, Raniaa, Abdulrahman, Cedra as they set out to start fresh.⁣ ⁣ Photo: ©UNHCR/Mohamed Alem⁣ ⁣ #Libya #family #Syria #war #mother #father #children

Faradou and her children are safe. The family was evacuated from a detention centre in Tripoli amid escalating violence. “The last weeks were the worst. The children were terrified by the sounds of fighting. Guards threatened to take one of my children away if they weren't quiet.” Faradou, and her children, aged 4 to 10, are from Eritrea. They are now in Niger. Renewed conflict has been escalating around Tripoli for months. Since November 2017, we have been working to free refugees and asylum-seekers trapped in detention centres. The Emergency Transit Mechanism has so far evacuated over 2,700 refugees – mostly to the Niamey, the capital of Niger. From there, durable solutions are found, including resettlement. Niger is currently the only country operating an ETM. We reiterate our call on more states to provide lasting solutions for those trapped in Libya. 1 in 2 people in Syria live at risk of explosive remnants of war. During one of our awareness sessions, Arej drew a UXO during an education session saying, "One is in my living room, my dad put rocks around it." Our mobile units travel far distances to teach them the dangers of mines & other explosives. ⚠️ Photo: UNHCR/Antwan Chnkdji #Syria #explosives #war #uxo #children #family
