As material times opens tomorrow, we recognise the work of Lamidi Fakeye ,a fifth generation sculptor and academic, he is regarded as one of the top wood carvers in the world. He is credited for helping bring the millennia old tradition of Yoruba sculpture into the modern era. Some of Nigeria’s other famous wood sculptors are Ben Osawe, who depicted natural subjects, abstract forms and figurative work, Olabisi Onawale Fakeye, whose works were inclined towards self-actualization through art using the Igbomina/ Ekiti traditional style, and Erhabor Ogieva Emokpae, noted for his work on the four entrances of the National Theatre in Lagos. New interpretations and renditions are currently being produced by a generation of artists such as, Reuben Ugbine and Abdulrasaq Awofeso #Material Times #Wood #Woodsculpture #lamidifayeke #nigerianhistory #history #africanhistory #art #africanart #contemporaryart

One more sleep till the opening of Material Times! The exhibition features leading contemporary artists working with ceramics, bronze, wood and metal/found objects. Wood sculpture is the most prevalent form of sculpture because of the availability and accessibility of wood and its malleability, much like the Benin bronze sculpture, often a figurative representation of the human form; typically used for religious or spiritual purposes. New interpretations and renditions are currently being produced by a generation of artists such as, Ruben Ugbine and Abdulrasaq Awofeso ( @abdulrazaqawofeso ). "Ehikhamenor’s work deals with ideas but he also deals with beauty, in particular the beauty of the female form. A whole book could be written on the artist’s women. They are women who stare at the viewer confidently, or whose heads are sometimes tilted up at an angle, assured women, perhaps even haughty women. These women are inherent in the work titled “7 Virgins: Delusional Dreams”. The seven virgins stand in seven different poses, each pose subtly different from the other, each one unique yet part of a wider culture, each one distinct yet belonging to a group." - Excerpt from Visual Histories and Coded Memories by @chibundu.onuzo in the Daydream Esoterica catalogue. . . In the BBC UK podcast with Chimamanda Adichie, Victor Ehikhamenor discusses the process of creating his mixed media masterpieces. This piece, “Holy, Holy, Holy King” depicts the unmistakable likeness of a Benin King, he combines coral-coloured prayer rosaries – which were introduced to the Benin Kingdom during the early years of colonialism, with miniature bronze statuettes, as well as crystal stones to highlight the radiance of the king right after coronation. His next exhibition "Daydream Esoterica" takes a different turn as it is the first time that he will use oil as a medium in all his works. The result encapsulates and compliments the richness and depth of the exhibition narrative.
