Hot girl summering is exhausting...
They ask me what I do and who I do it for || After the @chanelofficial couture show, I bumped into a group of African-American studies students from Boston college on a @blackparistours . It was hands down the highlight of my trip and a beautiful reminder for me to keep grinding + continuing to set an example as a black creative tryna make it. I loved seeing the students in Paris learning about our history, culture and the influence of the African diaspora globally. The tenacity of their instructor, who devotes weeks of her time in Paris educating and expanding the minds of our youth, blew me away. Buy, love, embrace Black, and get your passport. Thank you @mrstreetpeeper for capturing this magical moment.

Queen & Slim || Today, our film @queenandslim made its visual debut. Truly, nothing compares to seeing art that is for us and by us. Stories for the culture. Stories that aptly and uniquely unpack the state of black America. This one is a story about heart, fear, strength and the realities of our humanity. Most importantly, it’s a story of back love when the surrounding world is going up in flames. To @lenawaithe on the pen, @msmelina with the lens, thank you for inviting me to bring your protest art to life. @jodiesmith , our Queen, @Danielkaluuya, our Slim, you’ve stamped this generation, our culture with an unforgettable performance. In a powerful concerted effort, Black press channels were given the first BTS look at the film and these beautiful images by @photodre. When we write, produce, direct, costume design our own, nothing compares. We can’t wait to share this with you all. Coming to theaters Thanksgiving 2019. #queenwithacrownthatbedownforwhatever
Nola, darling || Hi, my name is Shiona and I’m a chronic overpacker. Hung out with the women of @cntraveler @womenwhotravel podcast to talk overweight luggage tips and tricks, what I packed for 5 months in New Orleans, solo vacations, the best luggage in the business, and what a privilege it is to be able to travel + experience the world. #linkinbio
Black skin, black braids; Black waves, black days; Black baes || This week @zacharytyerichardson and I had the privilege of delivering @mickalenethomas + @racquelchevremont ‘s tribute for @aperturefnd Muse-themed gala. What an honor. These women walk this earth with divine purpose: challenging the norm, assaulting the commonplace and empowering black women. Their work is an extension of their pioneering souls. If you don’t know them, get to know them; they know you and fight for you every day. Thank you for choosing me on your special night. (And thank you @chapoteau for being my date!)
Palm trees, ocean breeze + @oscardelarenta cut outs || Wedding invite said “Attire: Think Bauhaus beach modern, seen through the lens of 1970s disco photographed poolside by Helmut Newton. You know what to do.” Thank you @selbydrummond for getting married so that I could wear this dress. #stelby
Can’t rain on my parade || This time last week I was the Grand Marshal of the @Bermuda Day Parade. I’ve had a lot of jobs in my life but none have been more intimidating than coming home and representing “Bermudian Excellence” for my community. Bermuda Day has always been one of my favorite holidays — in fact back in the day it was the first time I ever made lewks (with bags to match!) for my friends and I on my grandmother’s sewing machine (swipe for receipts!). This year it was so beautiful to watch the vibrant culture of my small island come to life in such a grand, powerful way. Young gombeys coming into their own, black girls embracing their curls, families leaning into their storied heritage... I was nourished by this celebration of black Bermuda, a side of the island the outside world rarely sees. The day before my mom asked me when I was going to “come home and get a real job” and last Friday she got to watch me lead a parade. I don’t think there will ever be a better feeling than seeing my dad, aunt and little cousins run into the streets and cheer me on from the sidelines. Thank you Bermuda. There’s no place like home. #441forever
Bermuda’s Finest || This past weekend has been a never ending source of cultural appreciation, island pride, and celebration for me. Nothing represents that more than the Bermuda Gombeys. Historically, slaves were banned from dancing except for once a year. They danced defiantly but masked themselves from head-to-toe to hide their identity and honor their ancestors. The tradition of the Gombeys have been passed down from generation to generation, a medley of West African, Caribbean, Native American and British Cultures. They are the cornerstone of our culture and represent my people’s perseverance and fervor for freedom of expression. Thank you @googlepixel for being there to capture my heritage, my home and my history. #pixel3 #ad
Baby, girl, you’re still a flower
Servin’ body in @balenciaga || This week I had the honor of attending of The Black Alumni of Pratt’s Creative Spirit Award Gala with an evening to recognize the work of great artists who have an indelible impact on our culture while raising funds to benefit the organization’s scholarship programs for students of African and Latinx descent. Holding only 8% of positions in the art field, Black + Latinx artists are disproportionately underrepresented. I was blessed to witness the impact of @prattbap ’s work on these kids’ lives as they honored the groundbreaking careers of RH’s DeMonty Price, @asmalls777 , Demna Gvasalia of Balenciaga, and legendary artist Frank Stella. To be in the presence of these greats, and some of my personal icons like Cicely Tyson, @bethannhardison and @bevysmith was incredibly humbling. Growing up I was lucky to have them as examples, their paths and insight nurtured me. To top the night off, Balenciaga announced two full four year scholarship programs supporting Pratt students of color in need of financial assistance. Now, that is how you pave the way for a new cohort of black and brown creatives. Thank you @balenciaga for having me

Screen Queens || To know me is to know that I am completely TV obsessed. HBO is my kryptonite, Hulu is a favorite pastime; I have a medical degree from Grey’s Anatomy. That’s why this shoot was especially important to me. I love nothing more than seeing powerful women in leading roles on screen. Thank you @marieclairemag for having me for not one, but three covers. And for my triple threats @thandienewton, @iamsandraohinsta + @elisabethmossofficial thank you for changing the landscape of television. I’m watching + our little girls are watching a ‘new kind of TV heroine.’

“Sweatpants are all that fit me right now” - Regina George || God bless these @billylosangeles sweatpants and @versace dress-turned-robe for carrying me thru four months of beignets, chargrilled oysters, hurricanes, craft services, set catering and fried crab claws. New Orleans food, A blessing and a curse.
Tha block is hot || A lil latergram dedicated to the most perfect New Orleans Sunday - lunch at Cajun’s , the Revolution Second Line, something like a Thanksgiving Dinner at @williemaesnola (who treated us like family) and finally @usmovie. In the words of @lenawaithe “NOLA you owe me nothing.” #ablacklifelived
Secure the bag || Three months ago, I packed my entire life up in two Tumi suitcases and relocated to New Orleans to costume design my first movie. Since my days at W to now, and everything in between: innumerable international fashion weeks, styling jobs, trips to Paris, India, Nigeria, home to Bermuda and back... my Tumi suitcases have been my can’t-live-without travel companion. Please note, your girl does not pack light. Thank you @tumitravel for helping me see the world and never failing me once. I can’t wait to see where my new Alpha 3 takes me next #perfectingthejourney #ad
Queen(s) with a crown that be down for whatever @queenandslim || The revolution WILL be televised... I’m so proud to wake up every morning and call @lenawaithe @msmelina my bosses. Two trailblazing women not only telling OUR stories but pushing to create opportunities for other black women. I am beyond grateful for the invitation to weave my own truth into the fabric of this film. Lena + Melina - thank you for trusting me to bring your visions to life, pushing me out of my comfort zone, allowing me to be a part of this black ass movie and giving me the chance to costume design my very first film. A dream realized. #workwife #setbae #queenandslim

Same ( @driesvannoten ) skirt, different city || Missing #NYFW for the first time in over a decade - but I still expect my girls to serve lewks in these streets. (BUT don’t have too much fun without me - you know I’ll block your a$$es)
