Blenheim Palace near Oxford - one of the greatest of England’s stately homes - was a gift from a grateful nation to a General, John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, for his victories in battle. In a contemporary guidebook to the palace and its gardens - William Fordice Mavor’s ‘New Description of Blenheim’ - the extraordinary suggestion is made that the original layout for the planting of the ‘Military Oaks’ in the gardens imitated the disposition of the troops at the beginning of the Battle of Blenheim on August 13th 1704. Just think - a battlefield laid out in the heart of England in a massive, leafy reminder of a faraway military conquest! There is little evidence to support Mavor’s conjecture, but true or not, people build their own realities and it’s interesting that readers thought it was true. Indeed Mavor’s book was wildly successful, despite its turgid prose, being reprinted 13 times, once even in French.⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣Over the years; blasted by lightning or simply toppling over in their senescence, the oaks at Blenheim seem like ancient pachyderms or baobabs clinging to the edge of life. The plague outbreak in the Derbyshire village of Eyam, northern England, began in 1665 when a flea-infested bundle of cloth arrived from London for the local tailor. Within a week his assistant George Viccars was dead and more began dying in the household soon after. As the disease spread, the villagers turned for leadership to their rector, the Rev. William Mompesson, and Puritan Minister, Thomas Stanley. A short cycle from Brighton, England, standing on the South Downs with views of the Sussex Weald, stand the Clayton Windmills, locally known as Jack & Jill. Built in 1821, Jill, a post mill with a two-storey roundhouse, was moved from her original location in Dyke Road, Hove, to Clayton in 1852. She has four Patent Sails and is winded by a five-blade fantail mounted on the tailpole. The wind-shaft is wooden, with a cast iron poll end. The working life of the windmills ended in 1906 /08. Jill was restored in 1978 and ground flour again in 1986. During the Great Storm the following year, the mill’s sails were set in motion with the brake on, setting fire to the mill. Some members of the Windmill Society were able to get to the mill and save her. Today, Jill is still in working order and open to the public most Sundays between May and September. She produces stone-ground organic wholemeal flour on an occasional basis, the majority of which is sold to visitors.⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣Follow me @simonnorfolkstudio for updates, outtakes, unpublished and archive material on this and future projects⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣@simonnorfolkstudio @michaelhoppengallery @benrubi_gallery @galleryluisotti #photojournalism #documentaryphotography #simonnorfolk #iphonephoto #jack&jill #sussex #windmill #documentary #historical #machinery #england #southdownsnationalpark #unitedkingdom #countryside⁣ ⁣

From the archives: The bombed, burned and looted Ministry of Planning, Baghdad, Iraq, April 2003.⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣Thousands took part in the looting in Baghdad, which began on 9 April 2003, the day Saddam Hussein’s government ceased to function. Not only were government ministries targeted, as well as the homes of the Ba’athist elite, but public institutions vital to Iraqi society, including schools, hospitals, and food distribution centres. According to a subsequent report in the Washington Post, after the US military reopened two bridges across the Tigris River to civilian traffic, “the immediate result was that looters raced across and extended their plundering to the Planning Ministry (here photographed) and other buildings that had been spared.”⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣Follow me @simonnorfolkstudio for updates, outtakes, unpublished and archive material on this and future projects⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣@simonnorfolkstudio @michaelhoppengallery @benrubi_gallery @galleryluisotti #photojournalism #documentaryphotography #simonnorfolk #iraq #battlefield #war #aftermath #documentary #lensculture #visualarchitects #exhibition #photograph #ministryofplanning #baghdad #looted #infrastructure #battle⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣

SHROUD by @simonnorfolkstudio and @klausthymann at Gallery Luisotti, Santa Monica, California, until 31 May 2019.⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣On the Furka Pass in Southern Switzerland, there is a small shop that carves an ice grotto into the nearby Rhône glacier and charges tourists to experience inside the blue ice. A ‘glacier table’ - a boulder perched on a pedestal of ice. Photographed on assignment during an ascent to the Chhota Shigri Glacier, Himachal Pradesh, Indian Himalayas. The boulder protects the ice from ablation during sunny weather. Around the boulder the ice surface ablates and, as a result, is lowered, whilst the boulder remains at the original level. As the pedestal becomes higher and higher in relation to the glacier surface, the sun shines further under the boulder from the south (in the northern hemisphere). Consequently the pedestal gets ablated on its southern side, and the boulder will eventually fall off the pedestal, usually on its southern side (in the northern hemisphere). After this a new cycle of table growth and destruction may begin.⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣Follow me @simonnorfolkstudio for updates, outtakes, unpublished and archive material on this and future projects⁣ ⁣@simonnorfolkstudio @michaelhoppengallery @benrubi_gallery @galleryluisotti #photojournalism #documentaryphotography #simonnorfolk #ice #climatechange #globalwarming #icemelt #HimachalPradesh #Himalayas #glacier #glacialretreat #India⁣ ⁣

The “Glacial River Lagoon” (Icelandic: Jökulsárlón) is a large glacial lake in southeast Iceland, on the edge of Vatnajökull National Park. The first settlers arrived in Iceland around 870 CE, when the edge of the tongue of Breiðamerkurjökull glacier was about 12 mi (20 km) further north than it is today. As glacial retreat has extended its boundaries, the size of the lake has increased fourfold since the 1970s and is reported to be the deepest lake in Iceland (over 815ft (248m) deep.⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣Follow me @simonnorfolkstudio for updates, outtakes, unpublished and archive material on this and future projects⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣@simonnorfolkstudio #glaciers #photojournalism #documentaryphotography #simonnorfolk #climatechange #change #globalwarming #ice #icemelt #Iceland #Jökulsárlón #Vatnajökull #glaciallake #glacier #glacialretreat #travel #traveliceland⁣ ⁣

Mist-shrouded trees draped in moss along the footpath to the summit of Green Mountain, Ascension Island, South Atlantic. When Charles Darwin visited Ascension in 1836 he commented that the island was arid and entirely destitute of trees. After engaging his friend Joseph Hooker, later Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, Darwin, Hooker and the Royal Navy essentially embarked on the world's first experiment in "terra-forming". They created a self-sustaining and self-reproducing ecosystem in an attempt to make Ascension more habitable. Green Mountain is the world’s only artificial cloud forest, dense and Narnia-like — an environmental disaster (alien species have all but swamped the endemic ferns), but a botanical wonderland.⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣Photographed on Assignment for the Guardian.⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣Follow me @simonnorfolkstudio for updates, outtakes, unpublished and archive material on this and future projects⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣ @michaelhoppengallery @benrubi_gallery @galleryluisotti #photojournalism #documentaryphotography #simonnorfolk #NationalPark #forest #forests #trees #lush #green #naturalworld #ascensionisland #ascension #cloudforest #terraforming #ecology #charlesdarwin #evolution @simonnorfolkstudio ⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣

The Kersten Glacier margin, just below Uhuru Peak, with Mount Meru in the distance, photographed whilst climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, for the New York Times Magazine. Despite continuing shrinkage of Kilimanjaro’s glaciers, the steep margins of the Kersten Glacier remain impressive – the cliff is approximately 18 m (60 ft) high. The dust bands in the ice absorb more solar radiation than the surrounding, relatively-clean ice, and absorbed energy leads to melting and sublimation. Such stratigraphy is testimony to the complex ice history on Kilimanjaro.
