“Team Thailand’s oldest athlete Nakorn Thiptabmak has Down Syndrome. Previously when we spoke to him, he sometimes wouldn't respond. We assumed it was because he didn’t understand us. We would repeat the words slowly to get his attention. At a Healthy Athletes screening during the @worldgamesad, it was found that he had a problem with his hearing. He was unable to communicate that wax had built up and compacted in his ears over the years. He was referred to a doctor back home, prescribed ear drops and the problem has now been fixed. It seems like such a simple issue to us. But for people with intellectual disabilities, because of their difficulty in articulating their ailments, it takes special expertise to diagnose and treat their health issues. At the 2003 World Games, we had a football player who seemed to always miss the goal ever so slightly and a goalkeeper who could never follow the coach’s instructions during a game. When they were screened at Healthy Athletes, we found that the player had astigmatism and the goalkeeper had a hearing problem. So that explains all the issues right away, doesn’t it?” – Mrs Rachaniwan Bulakul, Program Director, Special Olympics Thailand #choosetoinclude #inclusivehealth

My family described me as destructive." Tap on our profile link to read how far Nakorn Thiptabmak, Team Thailand’s oldest athlete at the @worldgamesad, has come. #choosetoinclude #HumanraceXSoap
